I JUST FIGURED OUT HOW TO SLASH WASTE AT MY 7-12 DISTRICT

by: IndependentNJ

Well, its that time of year again! That time when New Jerseyans vote on their budget, and coincidentally, budget day is 420!!! So after you vote on your budget, roll up a fattie, because it will be the best way to kill the pain of Christie's assault on the middle class.

Recently, I found out my local 7-12 education authority, Central Regional SD in Bayville, NJ, stands to lose a total of $2,071,000; both from Christie's municipal aid cuts as well as money lost from "reserve". Although these cuts to municipal aid are necessary for the fiscal health of the state, Christie does not do anything to proactively control administrative costs and promote long term financial sustainability without hurting teachers or causing class sizes to explode (which would have the unintended consequences of more special education related lawsuits and costly out of district placements). Thus, I propose the below recommendations for reducing waste at my alma mater.

All the following sourced from Central Regional's budget, as well as from the educational staff search from the Asbury Park Press:

IndependentNJ :: I JUST FIGURED OUT HOW TO SLASH WASTE AT MY 7-12 DISTRICT
1 - ELIMINATE TEN ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS

This will not only entail firing ten people, but not hiring anyone else to take their place.

Eliminated will be:

Doug Corbett - $91,054 - Supervisor Curriculum & Instruction
Linda E Healy - $110,260 - Supervisor Curriculum & Instruction
Mangold-Brown - $62,300 - Television Production
Vincent Casale - $106,798 - Director Of Athletics
Tim Murphy - $88,232 - Ass Principal
William Browning - $125,325 - Ass Principal
Cynthia Thatcher - $80,725 - Library
Kathleen Miklosey - $44,300  Book-keeping
Christin Adamo - $41,000 - Substance Abuse
Jennifer Mullins - $50,000 - Substance Abuse

Total Saved: $799,994

There are 3 Supervisors Curriculum & Instruction, and I eliminated the highest paid two. Same for the 3 Assistant Principals. Book-keeping could easily be done by the Business Superindendent, there are 2 librarians in the high school, eliminated highest paid , Television Production needs to be cut also for it is unnecessary, and I'd like to put funding of athletics towards private sponsors,  and substance abuse can be handled by the many social workers and counselors at the school.

Since these administrators won't be replaced, their salaries, added up, will be the money saved

2 - ELIMINATE SCHOOL SPONSORED ATHLETICS; SEEK PRIVATE SPONSORSHIPS

Private sponsorships are done in sports all the time, so why can't we expand this concept to student athletics.

Total Saved: $938,790

3 - ELIMINATE NON-TEACHERS WHO HAVE BEEN THERE FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS, INTRODUCE 25 YEAR CAP ON WORKING AT SCHOOL, REPLACE WITH ENTRY LEVEL POSITIONS

Entry level work should be at a starting salary of 48,000. My father does not even make that, and he is a state worker 22 years deep.

The eliminated staff are (in parenthesis are their current salary - salary of their replacement = savings)

Dr. Lynn Steinbauer-Capezza ($103,445 - 48,000)
Dr. Dennis Driber ($141,868 - 48,000)
Vincent Kelly ($91,767 - 48,000)
Bruce Orsino ($134,968 - 48,000)

Although they will be allowed to draw their pensions, property taxation and pension funds are mutually exclusive, as pensions are drawn from a state fund (which would be healthy if not for politicians, whom, if federally elected, would raid the Social Security Trust Fund, and judges who allow such raids), and not from local funding.

Total Saved - $280,048

4 - ELIMINATE BUYBACKS

Eliminate the cash-ins of sick/personal days.

Dr. Parlapanides - $15,000
Dr. Driber - $90,467

Total Saved: $105,467

5 - PAYCUTS FOR NON-TEACHERS

These are: (in parentheses, current salary - new salary = savings)

40% paycut for non-teachers making over $80,001 per annum:

Brian Falkowski ($118,000 - 70,800)
Felycia Morreale ($85,532 - 51,320)
Dr. Parlapanides ($142,000 - 85,200)
Patricia Moore ($94,000 - 56,401)
Kathleen Thievon ($82,925 - 49,755)
Michelle Ramsay (85,532 - 51,319)
Debra Kindon (82,225 - 49,335)
Linda Waskovich (85,532 - 51,319)
Joseph Firetto (100,659 - 60,395)
Lynn Lasko ($86,315 - 51,789)

Total Savings - $385,087

20% paycut for non-teachers making over $60,001 and less than $80,000

Patricia Ondic ($71,620 - 57,296)
Linda Choate ($68,620 - 54,896)
Stacey Butler ($64,100 - 51,280)
Jeff Mangold ($60,300 - 48,240)
Colleen Burg ($70,620 - 56,496)
Colleen McCauley ($67,520 - 54,016)
Stacey Buscio ($67,520 - 54,016)
Noella Cauda ($62,500 - 50,000)
Joe Winkelreid ($73,420 - 58,736)
Grace Taino ($61,300 - 49,040)

Total Savings - $133,504

6 - ALL TEACHERS WITH MORE THAN 25 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE ARE GIVEN A WALK THIS YEAR AND ALL YEARS AFTER, BUT WILL DRAW PENSION FROM STATE

Yes, there will be a cutting of teachers, but 1) those positions will be replaced by entry-level positions, which are getting harder to find for teachers, and 2) they will be able to walk away with a state pension, which, to stress, has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH PROPERTY TAXES.

Individual Teachers Eliminated (in parentheses, the teacher's current salary minus entry level salary, assuming that all new teachers come in with master's degrees)

Rosemarie Shivers ($80,225 - 43,300) = 36,925
Daniel Duddy ($80,225 - 43,300) = 36,925
Julie Carter ($80,225  - 43,300) = 36,925
Loretta Leake ($80,225  - 43,300) = 36,925
Catherine Tier ($80,225 - 43,300) = 36,925
Margaret DeSalle ($80,225 - 43,300) = 36,925
Patrick Lynch ($80,225 - 43,300) = 36,925
Debbie Bueser ($80,225 - 43,300) = 36,925
Carol Vignevic ($80,725 - 43,300) = 37,425
Nancy Lowda ($80,725  - 43,300) = 37,425
Barbara Tomalo ($81,225 - 43,300) = 37,925
Michael Clemente ($82,225 - 43,300) = 38,925
Eileen Pfister ($82,225 - 43,300) = 38,925
Gloria Garibaldi ($82,225 - 43,300) = 38,925
Walter Ramsay ($82,925 - 43,300) = 39,625
Mary Flynn ($89,347 - 43,300) = 46,047

Total Saved: At Least $610,622

Right now, I just saved the school district $3,253,512 WITHOUT the need for teacher salary freezes. This is enough to make up for lost state aid, lost reverses, with some pocket change left over to bring property taxes down a bit. Add a bit of DIY math textbooks (the textbook industry is a cartel and DIY math textbooks are often done at colleges) and eliminated paraprofessionals (a shadowy occupation with ill-defined purposes), and anything else that needs the battleax, and the school district is solvent again.

Teaneck School Salaries (0.00 / 0)

When I used your above APP NJ Public School Teachers, 2008-09 database for Teaneck I was amazed to find out that 135 out of 460 persons earned over $100,000.
