Christie's budget cuts leave tourism to Snooki

by: Jason Springer

Sat Apr 17, 2010 at 10:09:02 AM EDT

The latest cut from Christie's budget ave is tourism, because in tough economic times not supporting a key source of revenue makes sense:
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has cut $2 million that would have paid for a tourism marketing campaign this spring.
So as we head into the summer, one of New Jersey's major economic engines will not be marketed despite having dedicated funds. New Jersey funds tourism through a 5 percent hotel-occupancy tax. The state Travel Industry Association said that will generate about $9 million in the next fiscal year.

Makes sense right? Did we get so much coverage good coverage from the Jersey Shore that we don't need to market our state as a vacation destination anymore?

Also interesting to note that the Governor made the Lieutenant Governor do the dirty work and deliver the bad news saying there was a scheduling conflict. She said it was a rookie mistake, but I wasn't sure if she was referring to the scheduling conflict or the decision to cut the tourism funds.

I don't like (0.00 / 0)
how dedicated funds keep getting raided. On the other hand, I'd pick (say) schools over tourism ads.

Cutting tourism $$ is penny wise (4.00 / 1)
and pound foolish!

And speaking about pounds, the big bad bully wimped out and had the Lt. Gov, who is from Monmouth County which is a big benefactor of tourism $, give the bad news!

Big bully chickened out, passed the buck?
