NJ college journalist riles national GOP figure

by: Rosi Efthim

Mike Huckabee, Southern Baptist preacher, former Arkansas governor and one-time GOP candidate for president, came to the campus of TCNJ a few days ago to give a $25,000 speech. He also agreed to sit for an interview for the student newsmagazine, The Perspective for a piece cross-posted at Blue Jersey by editor Michael Tracey.  And that's where things started to unravel for Huckabee, who maybe thought he was talking to simpler people than he was. Because now Huckabee's made some national news, claiming Tracey "grossly distorted" his views. Huckabee's big problem? Tracey has audio, and transcript.

Huckabee answered questions about scandal-plagued RNC Chair Michael Steele, disparaged his rival Mitt Romney and dropped a number of colorful, outrageous and nonsensical quotes about gay people, marriage equality, Don't Ask Don't Tell and gay adoptive parents. "Children are not puppies," he said. "This is not a time to see if we can experiment and find out, how does this work?" Huckabee compared same-sex marriage to drug use, and to incest.

Huckabee released a statement claiming Tracey "grossly distorted (his) views", took exception to Tracey's claim that he "ripped into" Steele, claims his own views of marriage are "hardly unusual" and accuses Tracey of sensationalizing and hyper-focusing on them.

Well. Tracey answered in The Perspective, calling Huckabee's words an ad hominem attack and taking issue with Huckabee's casting doubt on the credibility of his publication. The controversy escalated to Huffington Post, and to the Washington Post's blog 44. But worse for Huckabee than the national coverage is that The Perspective has now widely published both an audio recording, and a transcript of the interview.

In the statement on his website, Huckabee called attention in a diminishing way to Tracey's age, and said "the young college student hopefully will find a career other than journalism". Funny. I'm thinking just the opposite. Here's the audio; decide for yourself:

Well done (4.00 / 3)
the audio makes him look like more of a fool than the comments.

Hat tip Smarty Jones (0.00 / 0)
by the way... thanks, Smarty.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Great Job! (4.00 / 5)
Just listened to the recording of "The Interview" Mike Tracey conducted with Huckabee.  Superb job!  Huckabee's tone of voice is so benign sounding. He tried to be careful in his choice of words...'oh that is someone else's decision' in each case ("not mine"), but Tracey got him to divulge his own small minded view of the Huckabee world. Congrats, Mr. Tracey, you have a great career ahead of you.

Aw, shucks folksy charm (0.00 / 0)
That's the kind of language often used to describe Mike Huckabee, which is interested when you parse how objectionable his words are. No matter how covered in Southern charm, this is unacceptable nasty talk.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Mike Tracey and The Perspective deserve the student equivalent of a Pulitzer (4.00 / 3)
Mike's interview was tenacious and a gazillion times better than those by journalists with decades of experience - Mike never lets go, never lets Huckabee evade.  And Mike is also respectful in the process - this is just great journalism without showboating.  And beyond the interview, for those who claim that Mike and The Perspective took what Huckabee said out of context, oh please - bull.  Mike reported it exactly, another feather in his cap.  Mike, it's fun to be in the same decade with you, as FDR wrote to Churchill.

By the way, Garden State Equality issued the statement below:

"Mike Huckabee's comments, which ably demonstrate why he'll
never be President of the United States, prove exactly why New
Jersey needs to enact marriage equality. Every day New Jersey
denies marriage equality to same-sex couples is yet another day
in which our society gives an imprimatur to extremists to
demonize loving American families as somehow less than human.

"The outrageous tenor of Huckabee's comments, which lack
compassion for fellow human beings even beyond the position he expressed, demonstrates that opposition to marriage equality is,
for some, a stalking horse for the spewing of hate.

"Huckabee's comments bring the marriage equality debate in New
Jersey into newly sharp relief: Where does our government in New Jersey stand - with Mike Huckabee, who has compared loving marriages of same-sex couples to drug abuse and incest, or with the American dream of equality for all?"

I just read (0.00 / 0)
that Rev. squirrel for brains and his wife are moving to Florida.

Which, of course, has no state income tax.

I was thinking that maybe someone should say that Huck "would, hopefully find a career other than Faux journalism," but I decided that he belongs there and in politics.

Huckabee - Palin in 2012!

just covered the story.

Gave kudos to Mike Tracey.

TCNJ paid him $25,000 to spew hate? (0.00 / 0)
WTF!!!  Tax-payer $$$$???

"Discrimination caused by ignorance and fear is a tax on human progress" - Barbra Casbar Siperstein

Question: (0.00 / 0)
"I'd rather have an honest atheist than a dishonest religious person [as President]" -- Huckabee

So he'd endorse an atheist over himself??

Honest atheist (0.00 / 0)
He was being a shade or three past disingenuous wasn't he?

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.
