Quote of the Day: "The math part is ok"

by: Jason Springer

Fri Apr 09, 2010 at 10:30:00 AM EDT

Governor Christie may not be good at math, but State Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff says that State Sen. Paul Sarlo, the budget chair has his numbers right on the impact of Governor Christie's budget. Check out this exchange from yesterday's hearing:
"We take that $1.5 billion, $447 million, $848 million in rebates, that equals $2.8 billion in property tax relief cuts, is that correct?"

"The math part is okay," says the treasurer.

"I characterize it as property tax relief cuts based on the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services," Sarlo says.

All the while, the Christie administration continues to say they won't have a budget with tax increases. They say the cuts don't necessarily mean higher taxes, but in many places, that is exactly what will happen. The bottom line is that the Christie Administration is passing the buck to municipalities and school districts. People will be paying more, regardless of how it's framed.

it's up to to towns now ... (0.00 / 0)
Christie has given them the incentive to cut ...
Gov. Chris Christie is trying to solve New Jersey's chronic bud get problems by cutting spending, including state aid to local schools. But the state's powerful teacher unions and many school boards are balking -- claiming that this will either drive up local property taxes or result in devastating cuts to school services.

In fact, there's plenty of fat to cut. For proof, just take a close look at the recent hiring and spending patterns of Jersey's school districts: Both hiring and spending have risen far faster than can be justified by the mild growth in enrollment. Thus, most should have plenty of room to cut spending without major impact.
Given the state's chronic budget woes, the schools' hiring spree defies logic. Since 2001, just as budget problems began in earnest, public-school enrollment in Jersey has risen by less than 3 percent, or slightly more than 36,000 students. But total school hiring (full-time employees and equivalents) has jumped by 14 percent, or nearly 28,000 employees, according to federal Census statistics....

Just wondering (4.00 / 2)
where Sarlo's math skills have been for the past decade.  From EnCap to Xanadu, his fingerprints are all over every dime this state has pissed into the wind for years now.

There goes that number again (0.00 / 0)
2.8 billion was the amount Jim Florio had to raise taxes to be in compliance with the State Constitution. 2.8 billion was the amount Christine Todd Whitman borrowed to cover the tax cut she promised in order to get elected.
The Whitman Administration engaged in smoke and mirrors chicanery to skirt the State constitution in borrowing money for the State's operating budget.
Now the State Treasury has been depleted because we gave the wealthy a tax cut and the middle class is paying back Whitman's loans with interest.
With less money in the pockets of the vast majority of New Jersey's citizens less money is in circulation and therefore the State sales tax isn't taking in the expected revenue.
We were solvent before the Whitman tax dodge bankrupted the State.
Governor Christie's solution is to grant the wealthy another tax holiday on the premise that it will create jobs. That's the same flawed trickle down economics that caused the current state of national fiscal calamity. All those jobs Bush promised got sent off shore so the wealthy could realize a bigger bottom line, and in turn make "campaign contributions" in order to influence legislation that would make their bottom line greater yet.
The upper class is having a big party and the vast majority are not invited, despite  footing the bill.
To paraphrase the bigoted segregationist late Governor of Alabama, George Wallace:
Class warfare today, class warfare tomorrow, class warfare forever.
So how much smaller is the Christie budget than the last one passed by the Corzine Administration?

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.
