It is illegal and a violation of our civil liberties - literally an unwarranted intrusion. If they have reason to be suspicious of an American they should get a warrant.

President Obama may not want to be seen as a weak Commander-in-chief or aiding a would-be American terrorist. However, a wise Commander-in-Chief follows the rule of law and the constitution which have served us well.
