Kill the Bill? Fuck That.

Crossposted from MY LEFT WING

Reading the comment threads at FireDogLake, I feel like I've walked through the looking glass. Loathsome as this is, somehow I just don't think committing political suicide is going to move this country in any direction but further toward where the scum on the right want to go. I loathe this sell-out; but I also know when to concede defeat to the conservative Democratic forces that have completely outmaneuvered me and live with pragmatic consensus rather than join hands with those who would, the next available moment, turn around and stab me and mine through the heart.

Let me speak now to those who would rather see this bill DIE than pass because it's so godawful:

Maryscott O'Connor :: Kill the Bill? Fuck That.

Yeah, it's a corporate fire sale. Lesser of two evils is still evil. Same as it ever was. But, thing is...

Incrementalism is the name of the game in politics, boys -- when was it ever not?

Sorry. I got banned from DKos for being too fucking liberal. Guess you can now rake me over the coals for being too much of a concessionalist. I don't see it that way; I just see it as preferring Something: a microscopic victory (however riddled with grotesque flaws; and I'll grant you EVERYTHING on that) -- to Nothing -- or worse: utter defeat and an assured sweeping loss to a party that wants nothing more than my ideology's complete destruction -- not only in 2010 but in 2012 and beyond. And believe me -- this bill goes down now, that is ASSURED.

And if anyone tells me (hilariously, in my stronger moments of rage, I've uttered the words myself, but given a minute to cool off, I would NEVER tell you I seriously BELIEVE it) that if the Democrats are so craven and incompetent that this is the BEST they can get done with a huge majority in the House and what started out as a putative 60-vote majority in the Senate, then they DESERVE to lose in November...

Yeah, it feels really good to say that, doesn't it? Righteous. Indignant. After all -- it's true that the elected Democrats in Congress are craven, incompetent, self-serving worms, for the most part, who have frittered away the largest majority in history and done virtually NOTHING with it, compared to the performance of the Republicans in the past decade or so, who hadn't nearly the majorities, but somehow managed to intimidate the Democrats into rolling over for virtually (it seemed) everything they wanted done.

Yes. It feels good to say "They DESERVE to lose!" Except... it isn't just those craven, cowardly, selfish sonsofbitches that lose when those elections roll around and people vote them out for having accomplished nothing. WE lose. Yes, we lose because they fuck up so SPECTACULARLY in power -- but we lose SO much more when they're NOT in power.

Don't tell me you've forgotten already. Because, baby, I was here when Bush was President and the Republicans were in control -- I started My left Wing in July of 2005, in paroxysms of rage and frustration and godawful PAIN over what those SCUMBAGS were doing to this country.

I am NOT willing to let that happen again because I'm so furious with the current Democrats in office for fucking up healthcare reform and so unhappy with the bill that I'd rather "KILL THE BILL" and watch as American people vote them out of office for being the grotesque incompetents the failure to pass this bill would PROVE them to be.

THAT'S why I cannot support the hardliners on my own ideological side against this bill. THAT'S why my jaw has pretty much been wide open in disbelief as I've watched people with whom I agree on virtually every single ideological issue... CHEER the idea of Republican success in killing a major piece of Democratic legislation -- REGARDLESS OF HOW FUCKING SHITTY IT IS.

THAT'S why Dennis Kucinich is voting Yes, for chrissakes.

Wake the fuck up. Life is not a goddamned liberal Utopia, where if you don't get your way you can stamp your feet and MAKE IT SO.

Jesus fucking Christ.

NO-- do NOT talk to me ONE MORE TIME about how shitty this fucking bill is. I KNOW HOW SHITTY IT IS. I am not a goddamned motherfucking moron.

I am also not living in goddamned la-la land; I am living in an America where if Democrats LOSE, Republicans WIN -- and when Republicans WIN, WE ALL FUCKING LOSE.

And Bart Stupak should rot in hell. (0.00 / 0)

I agree, but... (0.00 / 0)
...something about this whole Stupak dynamic has really confused me.

The original House bill had a public option and the Stupak language.  As bad as the Stupak language is, are most progressives in agreement that they would be willing to swallow the Stupak language in return for a public option and/or the Grayson Medicare buy-in bill?  Was the only obstacle to making such a compromise the inability to include the Stupak language in reconciliation?

As wrong as both the original Hyde and current Stupak language are, for as long as I have been involved in fighting for a woman's right to choose, starting with the clinic defense efforts during the 1992 Democratic National Convention in New York City, how a woman pays for an abortion never seemed to be much of an issue.

My sister worked at the NYC clinic that I was involved in defending as an intake counselor and in her experiences, no woman who ever wanted to have an abortion was unable to get one due to an inability to pay for what is by most accounts a relatively inexpensive procedure.

So as long as the Stupak language did not dramatically impact a woman's right to choose, I am going to go out on a limb here and risk being flamed mercilessly for saying that I would be willing to accept the Stupak language in return for a public option and/or Grayson Medicare buy-in.

But I guess that deal is not going to happen, so maybe the point is moot.  If that's the case, I would love to know why.

I could be wrong... (0.00 / 0)
but my understanding of the original Stupak amendment barred any insurance company participating in the "insurance exchange," which consumers could use to shop for the best coverage, from offering abortion coverage.  It didn't matter whether the woman paid for such coverage with her own funds.

Stupak's theory was that the exchange, I guess funded in part by the government, constituted Federal funding for abortion.

The D response was say that women had the choice to pay for a separate insurance policy that would cover such a procedure.  Like any 26 year old thinks long and hard about an unwanted pregnancy.

Stupak is a piece of shit. He was playing around with politics and power.  He lied about the number of people he had on his "side" who could wreck any healthcare legislation. Of course, his tortured language of what constitutes Federal funding could only be believed by tea baggers and the conference of catholic bishops.

As much as I love Grayson, Medicare buy-in was never a viable option.  I really don't understand what happened to the public option, although I have some theories.

As for the sanctity of life, that works if you have not yet been born or after you've died in Afghanistan or Iraq.

I don't disagree, although... (0.00 / 0)
...I did like Stupak's speech during the motion to recommit.  According to MSNBC, some unknown Republican congressman yelled out "baby killer" during his speech.  That said, I still hope that he loses his primary election.

I am just as befuddled as you are with regards to the public option.  It was part of the original House bill.  Howard Dean and Adam Green were able to get the Senate to give the House a blank check on reconciliation, but as soon as the ball was in the House's court, it seemed as if all talk about the public option disappeared overnight.

I thought that it might have been a casualty of losing the Stupak votes, but that cannot be possible since they got those votes back.  While I am happy that the bill passed, someone has some 'xplainin' to do.

Unless I'm mistaken, New York allows state funding for abortion, as does New Jersey. Women in other states aren't so lucky, and many of them can't afford even a "relatively inexpensive procedure".  The Hyde Amendment has killed women, and will continue to do so.

not defending the Hyde amendment (0.00 / 0)
But abortion is not the only medical procedure that poor women need access to.  It isn't even close to being the most important.  It might not even crack the top 10 or the top 20.  What percentage of poor women have unwanted pregnancies?

I am just trying to figure out what happened to the public option.  It would be one thing if the House hadn't passed it originally, but with the opportunity to write their own check, why wasn't the public option included in the fixes?
