Malone: Yes we criticized last year, but that was Corzine

by: Jason Springer

Wed Mar 17, 2010 at 10:15:00 AM EDT

Watching the comments following the budget address was great. Assembly Budget Minority leader Joe Malone gave us this when Michael Aron pointed out that Republicans criticzed the lack of a pension contribution in the Governor's budget last year, but weren't saying anything this year when Christie was contributing nothing at all:
You talk about not making a pension contribution this year.  Corzine didn't make it last year. We criticized him for it. Yes, but you know what, he didn't try to make changes in the pension system. We're going to try.
Excuse me, what? So just because you're trying to fix a broken system, you're allowed to continue the actions that helped to break it? What the hell kind of logic is that?

Treating pension like credit card debt (0.00 / 0)

It is true that Corzine did not fully pay into the Pension Fund each year.  However, as the FY 2010 Treasury budget document (page 32) indicates, he paid in the same amount for pension in four years $3.19 billion (FY 2007 - FY 2010) as in the previous 14 years $3.17 billion (FY 2093 - FY 2006.) In reality Corzine's last small payment of $150 million scheduled for the current budget is being opposed by Governor Christie.

Our Governor General should honor the small current budget payment and make at least a token payment in his new budget. New Jersey is 49th among states that most recently paid the highest percentage of their annual required contribution for pension plans. Anybody who owes debt with a credit card, mortgage or loan, knows the dangers of non-payment. Christie's actions hurt the morale and confidence of the very state employees he might wish to retain or hire.
