Gag me with a spoon.

He's the sponsor of the health care bill, and I am so against that it's not even funny.
                - Diane Gooch, candidate for Congress in NJ-6

I can't not take Diane Gooch's candidacy seriously. The wealthy Monmouth County GOP activist is the publisher of The Two River Times, and the Vice-Chair of the Monmouth Republican Party. And, not for nothing, Christie rocked the shore towns last year, and everybody knows it.

Frank Pallone is a big target. Knock him down - like Christie knocked down New Jersey - and you've really done something. Pallone's been in Congress for two decades, acts as Democratic Municipal Chair in his own hometown of Long Branch, and has the biggest war chest in the entire House, some $3.9 million and change.

Gooch - husband Michael is a Wall Street guy worth hundreds of millions - brings both party position and the ability to self-fund her campaign wholly if she wants to. And argue for campaign finance all you want, right now in 2010 - and particularly in expensive media market NJ - money can matter. Both those things mean Gooch doesn't have to jump through hoops other candidates, who have to spend their time raising money, have to.

Pallone, well-liked both in his District and outside it, chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee's subcommittee on Health, which puts him right in the middle of the struggle for health care reform, upon which the Democratic Party is shredding, upon which the teaparty was born.

Pallone's also the Communications Chair of the Democratic Policy Committee. He's the message man, on health care reform, and everything else. The man can talk. So I'm trying to take Diane Gooch seriously, even after that clunky teenager quote above.  I know I should. I'm trying so hard it isn't even funny.

She'll fund her campaign with Wall Street money? (4.00 / 1)
Hard to imagine an effective response against that, the public is clamoring to elect a Wall Street stooge this year.

Not only that some of it's from derivatives (0.00 / 0)
It's a very odd candidacy that almost defies logic.   Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angellini from Ocean seems to be a much better fit for the district and I think would play much better in the Middlesex County battlefield.

A Rumson millionaire's spouse pressing the flesh in South Amboy and Sayreville?

Eating at a diner in Woodbridge?

I guess.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

"So, Diane goes: No way! (4.00 / 2)
And I go: Way! And Diane goes: Get outta town. And I go: Totally. And Diane goes: Awesome! And I go: Don't even go there! And Diane goes: That's so ghetto! And I go: Schweet!"

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.

I posted this earlier elsewhere (0.00 / 0)
and it triggered a response asking for the website where they could donate to Pallone's campaign.

I also want to point out that she lives in Rumson, which is in Rush Holt's district.  If this is his opponent then bring it on.  ANd I will do all in my power to make sure she gets nowhere near Congress.

It's so nice to be back posting here again-- computer problems suck (not fixed yet).

I don't think the district issue matters much here (0.00 / 0)
I live blocks from Long Branch and am in Rush Holt's district.   My sister lives in Middlesex and is in Pallone's.

Pallone's district is part of the old Jersey Shore district so I think almost any candidate from coastal Monmouth who has lived in the area for a long-time can make a claim to representing the 6th.

I think the real fight will take place in Middlesex County where democrats have been losing ground.

Who will give Pallone the toughest fight there?  I find it hard to believe a Wall Street millioniare's spouse is the one.

The reality though is that Pallone is somewhat vulnerable this year, so we will have to gear up and put resources into this district including our personal time.

I am willing to fight all I can (0.00 / 0)
I live in coastal Monmouth county (near Asbury Park) and I'm sort of worried about Mary Pat Angelini.  I did not vote for her for Assembly and she supports marriage equality (which could be used against her to the GOP base).  Several people have heard of her run and are not supporting her.

Not sure how she'll fare in Middlesex-- I'm not familiar with the county's political demographics (though I may end up moving there) but I'm willing to travel to the county to help.  In Monmouth, Asbury Park and Long Branch have to mobilize like they did not do in 2009.

Asbury Park & Long Branch (0.00 / 0)
Democratic areas, with low voter turnout. Anybody have a bead on why?

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

I haven't lived here long enough for all the reasons (4.00 / 2)
but I know that various progressive groups really try and work on them (and I've been included) by registering voters and canvassing the areas.

My guess is that voters in those cities feel that nobody in power is looking out for and cares people like them.  As I was canvassing for Corzine in both cities last fall, my common response was "it's not like my vote matters anyways."

I don't have any numbers, but expect a diary from me about voter turnout in Asbury Park and Long Branch in the future (not sure whether I should do it now or wait until closer to the election).

Three Issues are Most Likely (0.00 / 0)
1.) Income, race and ethnicity which usually correlate with turnout.
2.) Lack of candidates (outside of Obama) that appeal to these communities.
3.) A pro-development Democratic mayor in Long Branch who has alienated some of the long-time residents there.

However, it might be possible to mobilize the GLBT electorate to use the 2010 NJ-06 race as a GOTV practice run for 2011.

After all it is the "gayest district in the state" according to Sean Kean and he is clearly in the sights for 2011 of the GLBT community which includes straight friends, neighbors and allies who are usually not counted when politicians consider the ramifications of voting against GLBT civil rights.

The local alt weekly down here calls Sean Kean Senator Sweet-Cheeks.

Sean Kean also had a warm reception yesterday (0.00 / 0)
I really should learn how to check my politics at the door when going to a parade where a good chunk of the audience is drunk.  However I did not and left there angrier than I came.  I know it was very immature of me, but after applauding Holt and Pallone, I gave Kean (and Gooch) a one-finger salute.  It felt kinda good :-)

Granted the parade was in Belmar and gets most of Spring Lake there too.  Belmar I think is split politically but I know that Spring Lake and points south in Monmouth County are pretty Republican.

THat parade definitely dimmed my political hopes for 2010 and 2011.  I really hope that a parade audience is not the electorate.  At first I went there thinking of how many voters I could register but after seeing Kean's applause, I had second thoughts.

Contributions (4.00 / 1)
Thanks, Tabby! (And welcome back.)

The Congressman partners with ActBlue for online contributions, so you can click on the contribute link on his site, or go directly to his page at ActBlue.

You may think Gooch is laughable as a candidate, but her bank account is no laughing matter. Whatever Congressman Pallone has stored up, Gooch is still in a position to outspend any and all opponents. (A position, which, as noted above is not actually in the district...)

(A note for the uninitiated, I have proudly and happily been working with Team Pallone for a few years now, though the opinion expressed here is my own.)

Combine Gooch's (0.00 / 0)
money with unlimited corporate money and we have a problem.
The partisan Supreme Court knew exactly what they were doing with their specious decision to unleash even more corporate influence on the electoral process.
When will the spineless Democrats start impeaching the worst offenders on the Court?

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

I'm worried more about her after today (4.00 / 1)
she had a float in the Belmar (southern most tip of the 6th district) St. Patrick's Day parade and she received more of an ovation than Pallone and Holt (walking together) did.

Some young people (late teens/early 20s) were sitting in front of me cheered her on and raved about how sexy Sean Kean was.  I'm guessing they have no idea what a hypocrite Kean is.  They also cheered on Gooch.  I'm hoping they live in Smith's district.
