Christie, 400K Tax Cut and the Unemployed

by: princetonblue

Promoted from the diaries by Rosi

If Gov. Christie is really going to go after the unemployed, then NJ Democrats really need to tie that decision to Gov. Christie's tax cut for those making more than $400,000.

If NJ really is in a financial crisis, there is no justification for taking money from the poor only to give it to the rich.   In the current economic crisis, such decisions are not only wrong, they are immoral.

Gov. Christie is giving the Democrats a great issue.  They should use it against him.

Let's do it one better (4.00 / 1)

I agree with Senator Sweeney's two points in Hopeful's below post: 1) It is unfair to take it out on the unemployed, and 2) employers will have to bear an increased cost to keep the system solvent. NJ has already borrowed substantially from the federal government to meet current unemployment commitments.

I oppose reducing the tax rate on income over $400,000. Furthermore, in line with what Curmudgeon said in a recent diary, since NJ's tax bracket jumps from $75,000 to $400,000, I think there should be a new intermediate rate for those who earn between $250,000 and $400,000, which would garner more revenue for the state to meet our pressing needs.

In effect, we should not make matters worse for the unemployed, and we should make matters a little worse for those earning over $250,000.

Yes, but ... (4.00 / 1)

raising taxes on those $250,000 can be easily described as "Those Democrats raising taxes."

We have to play the silly political game.  Christie is giving the rich a tax cut while taking money from the poor.

Christie never cut that rate (0.00 / 0)
Corzine was dumb enough to  make that tax rate for one year ,so pin that error on Corzine not Christie . why didn't our legislature pass a extension in lame duck rather than all the other worthless bills they tried to pass with little success .

Wisniewski statement (4.00 / 1)
Just arrived:

"Once again Governor Christie is showing what his priorities are and unfortunately they don't include the middle class taxpayers of this state.  He is asking New Jersey's unemployed for $50 a week to fix the UI fund, while giving huge tax cuts to those making $400,000 and over. That's wrong."

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Anyone have a handle on this?
