by: Jay Lassiter

Thu Feb 18, 2010 at 11:08:56 AM EST

Gosh darn it, sometimes I just love me some straight men. - - promoted by Rosi

It appears that straight guys who don't run the Democratic Party are losing patience with the straight dudes who do.

I responded to your post on Twitter about this (4.00 / 2)
but I'll say it again.   I'm a straight girl who is 100% in favor of marriage equality.  I take my right to get married for granted (I'm almost 30 and show no signs of getting married anytime soon) and it makes me sick that people do not have the same rights I do.

I'll be in Asbury Park tomorrow where I get to direct my anger at the hypocrite of the decade--- the senator who loves how the gays increase property values and drive out drug dealers but he does not want them to have rights.

Take a bow, Blue Jersey (4.00 / 2)
Tell ya why:  The Blue Jersey community, most of which is straight, blazed the trial, for non-LGBT people across New Jersey to come out for marriage equality.  The bloggers here did it years ago, when quite frankly most of the prominent voices were LGBT and it was far more unique than it is today to see so many non-LGBT people be outspoken for marriage equality.  But in the past year to two,  Garden State Equality's events, including the lame-duck session rallies we did in Trenton and the town meetings we continue to do like the one in Collingswood last night, have probably been 40 to 50 percent non-LGBT - really.  It used to be 20 percent.  (If you're asking how we can tell, well, many folks self-identify or come with their spouses or partners.)   That marriage equality has expanded beyond its base started right here, on Blue Jersey.  That is one of the greatest victories imaginable - and it's yours.  Love you all.  Grateful to you for life.

wait ... we're straight???? (0.00 / 0)

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

I know we have many many allies among straight people but it's great to get a reminder like this. I always say this because I mean it: we love our straight allies. They care about equality passionately.

Simply Being Right Isn't Enough.... (0.00 / 0)
....the only way marriage equality passes in NJ is when the pols realize that they will lose their jobs if they fail to submit to the will of the majority of their constituents.

That means war.  Political hardball, and it also means broad based coalitions with the full spectrum of progressive/reform minded NJ residents.

Now is the time to begin planning for a truly reformist progressive to be running against Christie AND against every elected that failed to support marriage equality.

This will mean garnering the active support of "straight" people.....as one, I can tell you that the bigotry towards lgbt folks is every bit as offensive to me and evil as the bigotry toward racial/ethnic/religious minorities....I believe that is true of most heterosexuals in New Jersey!

The opposition to marriage equality is rooted in fear/ignorance/bigotry AND self serving political cynicism.

Playing conventional interest group pressure politics won't work in this situation........if that couldn't work under Corzine there is zero chance of it working with the neanderthal we have as governor now.

Again, what's needed is a broad based MOVEMENT that unites every progressive, intelligent, educated, decent human being in New Jersey.   We are in the majority.....let's get together and use our power.
