Don't Ask, Don't Tell, DO CALL!!!!

by: Jay Lassiter

Wed Feb 17, 2010 at 07:41:56 AM EST

Promoted by Rosi.

Please join me in calling our Senators to urge them to repeal the military's so called "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy that discriminates against gays and lesbians who want to serve their country in the US Military.

I'll spare you the reasons why discrimination sucks and simply remind you that this issue demands your urgent attention.

  • Lautenberg's contant info is (202)-224-3224
  • Menendez is at (202)-224-4744.

Timing is everything in Washington and now is the time to light a fire under our Senators to vote AND to fight to repeal this retrograde policy.

Great! Also call your Representative. (4.00 / 1)

The current Don't Ask Don't Tell congressional proposal is the Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2009 introduced in the House as HR 1283. You can read the bill by accessing http://thomas.loc.gov/home/c11... and entering "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

It is a fairly straightforward and short bill (about three pages) which seeks to repeal the current policy and add a new policy of nondiscrimination based on sexual orientation in the armed services.  It extends the policy to the Coast Guard.  It permits re-accession into the military  for qualified individuals dismissed from service under the old policy.  It defines sexual orientation as "heterosexuality, homosexuality, or bisexuality, whether the orientation is real or perceived, and includes statements and consensual sexual conduct manifesting heterosexuality, homosexuality, or bisexuality." It includes a list of House sponsors.

Just got a note of encouragement from Rob Andrews that he's be "working it" in the House effort to repeal the ban.

But keep the calls going to the Senate AND the House.

    Paging Mr. Adler.... (0.00 / 0)
Thanks Bill.  I checked and learned that Jersey is well represented w. 7 of 8 Democratic congressmen (Andrews, Payne, Sires, Holt, Sires, Pallone, Pascrell) signing on as co-sponsors.

    Only Adler is absent.

    Adler is on board (4.00 / 2)
He signed on in July. All House NJ Dems are sponsors. There are now 187 co-sponsors according to Thomas.

As a far as I can see, it looks as if there is but one lonely Republican on board, and none from NJ!
