Follow along with the Assembly Budget Committee Meeting

by: Jason Springer

Wed Feb 17, 2010 at 09:30:00 AM EST

The Assembly Budget Committee will convene this morning in Trenton to take testimony on Governor Christie's proposals for closing the Fiscal Year 2010 estimated budget shortfall. You can see from the tenor of the quotes in the release that it appears the Democrats will continue with their response last week:
"Gov. Christie's ill-advised plan steers New Jerseyans toward property tax increases, potential hospital closures and the possibility of higher tuition and transit fares that are no different than tax hikes," said Greenwald (D-Camden). "It also kills job creation. On top of all that, Gov. Christie kept his plan secret and executed it without any public discussion. This is undemocratic and an affront to residents and businesses alike."
Among the cuts that have received the most scrutiny include the NJ Transit funding, which may lead to higher fairs and service cuts. Cuts in funding to schools, affordable after school programs and Family Care have also raised the attention of advocacy groups and Legislators.

You can hear the audio of the hearing which will be streamed live. The hearing starts at 10am. It would be great if the Assembly could give us video of these hearings and committee meetings more regularly as well so the public could see and not just hear what is going on if they can't make it to Trenton.

Don't Want to Defend Christie, but ... (4.00 / 1)

Has anyone proposed any other alternatives to closing the budget shortfall?  The money has to come from somewhere.   Are the Democrats just upset that they weren't consulted or is there a genuine policy disagreement here?  If the latter, then what's the alternative?

Christie seems to be acting like a dictator to me, but I don't see any alternative policies being proposed.   I hope I'm wrong here.

Well said (0.00 / 0)
People are looking for Democrat leaders to step up and address the situation. Will they advocate spending cuts or more taxes?

People are watching.

Argh ... so much to dislike (0.00 / 0)
in our model Governor-General's proposals for addressing the current budget shortfall.

I do not doubt that cuts are necessary, but our legislators and advocates have to make clear that Governor Christie has exaggerated the shortfall by about $1 billion, and there is room for reinstating some of his cuts.

There is a very short timeline for constituents to let their legislators know the issues of most concern. Every Democratic legislator and constituent will have his or her pet peeve(s) but not every concern will be redressed. At the end of the day and after caucuses, I hope the Democrats will unite behind a list of key demands and fight for them.

Also, as already has happened regarding COAH, the courts are a source to address over-reaching impoundment and Executive Orders.  Such legal actions may not be timely enough to impact the current budget, but they can set a precedent that might reduce the Governor's axe-wielding tendencies in the future.

"The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die." - Sen. Ted Kennedy

Dems have to put clean energy & envrionment (0.00 / 0)
on agenda.

Screw Dave Pringle and NJEF's CHristie endrosement.

They do not speak for the environmental views of the people of NJ - see recent Monmouth/Gannet poll whee environmental rollbacks were strongly opposed - 79% responded that they would be "upset" by rollbacks in regulations..

Why are Dems silent on extremely popular clean energy and environmental diversions thus far?
