Political tsunami hit NJ-GOP this morning

by: ken bank

Well, I guess this means Michael Illions is taking himself out of the running for Middlesex GOP Chair. It's an interesting development, really, because I suspect Illions will leach off a lot of the life and vibrancy, however much there is, from the GOP, as well as some of its younger members who see him as a more interesting Pied Piper to follow than NJ GOP Chair Jay Webber. - promoted by Rosi

Forget about snowmageddon, earthquakes and underwear bombers.  A political super-duper-uber-tsunami of biblical proportions hit the NJGOP suddenly this morning when it was officially announced that former professional wrestler, reactionary blogger and teabagger activist Michael "Conservatives With Attitude" (aka "Crackpots With Agita") Illions was leaving the Republican Party to become Executive Director of the fledging NJ Conservative Party.

Seriously, folks, this could have some interesting ramifications for the NJGOP down the road.  For one thing if they can recruit somebody like teabagger activist and former congressional candidate Justin Murphy, who got 25% of the vote in the 2008 primary, to run on the conservative line in the 3rd district it could make a difference in that race.

Looking farther down the road, to the 2013 campaign, I'm sure Illions will recruit a gubernatorial candidate ala Murray Sabrin or, perhaps, Steve Lonegan who can raise enough money to qualify for matching funds and debate appearances.  Unlike Chris Daggett, who arguably took votes away from both parties, a wingnut candidate will likely take more from the GOP than from Democrats.

NJGOP Chairman Jay Webber, Joe Kyrillos, Alex DeCroce and other GOP leaders are familiar enough with Illions and his history of disrupting the GOP to know what bhe is capable of doing.  They also remember what the NJ Libertarian Party almost did to Whitman's re-election in 1997 when Sabrin took enough votes away from Whitman to make the race alot closer than it should have been.

Whatever we might think personally about Illions and his ilk, NJ  politics just became a whole lot more interesting, and entertaining as well.  Stay tuned.

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.

Infrastructure (4.00 / 1)
What I think is interesting here is that the NJ Conservative Party, which has no infrastructure that matches either the Dems or GOP, is likely to build some courtesy of Illions.

That ought to put the NJ GOP under some pressure. And it's another critical reason why the Democratic Party should fill its infrastructure - its County Committees - with tough worker bees willing to do the local organizing that those positions are supposed to be about. Meaning no disrespect to individuals currently in those slots, but if they're aren't filled by productive people, the Democratic Party won't be the bottom-up org it could be, and runs a far higher chance of running right off the rails.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

There are zero voting LGBT folks on the NJDSC (0.00 / 0)
there are many, many open municipal and local open slots ... do we see any outreach to fill them?

Who is stepping up?

It is all about infrastructure ... we need to learn this or we go backwards!

Forget about the NJDSC... (0.00 / 0)
...for a moment, Babs.  The only thing that the voting members do is elect a Chair and Vice Chair.  Their work is done for the next 2-4 years.  However, county committee elections are held uncevery two years and there are numerous opportunities for CC members to have their voices heard.

If you and Steven are waiting for printed invitations from county chairs for LGBT folks to fill vacant or non-vacant CC seats, the two of you are going to be waiting a very long time.

If you want LGBT folks to take seats on CCs, whether they are vacant or not, you are going to have to recruit them and walk them through the process of filing petitions and possibly even campaigning in their districts.

If GSE and Stonewall Democrats are not willing to do the shovel work needed to get LGBT folks on the CCs, I don't see how you can complain about the NJDSC not doing enough to make sure that the LGBT community is suffciently represented amongst its voting members.

You are missing the point! (0.00 / 0)
I do recognize that we are not part of the infrastructure. That IS one of the things that is of paramount importance to NJ Stonewall Democrats. It is something we are doing, in selected areas, ... NOW!

We would love to implement a 21 county strategy, but, yes, finding the folks to do the heavy lifting is a challenge!

We can complain when we have people to are willing and able and the door is shut for the same old, same old! The Democratic Party does demand a minimum diversity in the infrastructure of the respective State parties to reflect the diversity of the Democratic voters.

I was involved, in a small way, when the DNC added LGBT Americans in their by-laws as a recognized category that should be included in the Party and respective state parties infrastructure. I don't know the numbers at the municipal or county levels, but I do know that 0 out of 112 on the State level is quite telling and unrepresentative of the LGBT vote in NJ!

I know its a 2 way street, but I do know that when we do knock on the door, we should get an appropriate response and if our response is appropriate, the door should be open!

The NJDSC can give that message to the County Chairs! We do need change! We DON'T want to lose to apathy and ambivalence!
