Quote of the Day: A tax by another name

by: Jason Springer

Fri Feb 12, 2010 at 01:30:00 PM EST

The new Governor talks a good game about not wanting to raise taxes, but is he really just shifting the monetary burden while leaving out the words? Assemblywan Wisniewski had this response to the cuts announced to NJ Transit:
"(The) plan for NJ Transit will equate to reduced services or higher fares, and let's face it - if Gov. Christie raises fares he will be increasing taxes on working families who have no other choice but to use public transit day-in-and-day-out to get to work," Wisniewski said.
Many are also making the same point over the cuts in school funding, which they believe will just drive up local property taxes because you're just shifting the burden. Groups already started calling him the anti-transit Governor after the speech. Just because he calls them fares and fees rather than taxes doesn't mean he isn't putting a greater burden on people, while telling them he's trying to solve their problems. From what I gather so far, he won't raise tolls on people who can afford to drive their cars, but people who have to take NJ Transit will be forced to carry the extra load.
