Gone With the Wind

I guess I am cynical, but Governor Tom Kean's lamenting a lost age of bi-partisan civilty in his childhood reminds me of nothing so much as our Southern aristocrats lamenting the loss of their "chivalrous" antebellum society.

You'll notice that at the heart of it is Kean's love of his lost childhood, being raised as the son of a Congressman in a long line of elected officials. How wonderful it was when his father could be endorsed by other powerful officials out of "friendship." I bet that lovely tradition never hurt Tom Kean Sr. or Tom Kean Jr. Kean's outrage comes when he considers that voters might (gasp!) vote against someone who's already made it in to the club. Why, how could Republican voters even think of not re-electing Senator McCain, the son of Admiral McCain, the son of Admiral McCain? It's enough to make me cry. I certainly broke into tears when I learned Governor Hughes's stepson lost a primary to get his father's post.

The reality is that no one under the age of 40 can remember the days of self-identified Liberal Republicans, so the era of bipartisan voting is long gone. Whether the new era in which the parties are aligned by political beliefs, instead of being jumbled by different regional traditions related to the Civil War, works well or not remains to be seen. But Kean shouldn't worry too much. The Keans, Bushes, Kennedys, and Frelinghuysens will keep their power, and that's what "civility" was really about.

Well I am under 40, just barely (0.00 / 0)
I remember the Democrat and Republican leaders in washington sitting down for breakfast on a regular basis to work thinks out.  Now it seems like Republcans are all seen as "evil" and anyone who runs on a Republican ticket is automatically assumed to be a "Bush / Rove" clone.

Most of the Republicans I know are very liberal in their social beliefs.

meh. I guess I wasn't clear (0.00 / 0)
Nothing being said about Bush is any worse than what was said about Nixon or Carter or Clinton or LBJ or Hoover or FDR or JFK. In any case, since I expressed sympathy for the conservatives challenging McCain, I don't see why you think I called Republicans "evil."

Robert Kean's time in Congress was the time of McCarthyism, the House Un-American Activities Committee and the Red Scare. I think when it is held up as some sort of bipartisan love of country fest it's just BS. Love of country was used as a political weapon, and mainly against non-politicians. Political campaigns were at least as nasty as today too. So what is Kean really talking about? He's nostalgic of his childhood (we all are, I'm your age and I miss the BeeGees) but most of all the elite are quite comfortable lining their own nests and don't want voters involved, whether movement conservatives or progressives or whatever. That's what Kean was really saying, whether he admits it or not.

As for breakfast, Republicans and Democrats still meet all the time. Look at what Chris Dodd and the Republicans are doing to financial regulations this week.  Last year, I read a great article about the food the Gang of Six ate during their meetings last year.
