Homeless in Newark

  • Two years ago, Kendall Woolridge lost the best job he ever had: mascot of the Newark Bears. How he ended up where he is at 23, with several other young people, seeking warmth on the floor at Penn Station in an enclosure near the Market Street bus line.

    Haitians needing New Jersey's help

  • With the 4th-highest population in the United States of Haitian-born people, New Jersey may soon have an influx of Haitian people trying to escape an increasingly devastated and resourceless infrastructure in their home country. The number is yet unknown but it may exceed the abilities of community groups and fall to the state to provide for housing, medical and education needs, according to documents obtained by Star-Ledger in advance of a closed-door meeting inside the Christie administration tomorrow.

    Getting an auditor

  • New Jersey Association of Counties, which is taxpayer-funded lobbying group, takes on an auditor following criticism of its spending practices.

    No more horsies

  • Well, not as many. A report prepared for the Governor to analyze financial problems at the NJ Sports and Exposition Authority suggests drastic cuts on horse racing, including closing Meadowlands Racetrack and cutting race days at Monmouth Park.

Sometimes they like it when he gets steamed

  • Star Ledger editorial supports an angry Chris Christie's desire to go after the flabby and overpaid Passaic Valley Sewerage Authority.

    Christie comes out swinging

  • Philly.com reviews the govy's 1st 2 weeks in office and finds him feisty and ready to fight on money issues.

The struggles of Main Street, New Jersey

  • There are no easy answers, and no simple formulas for keeping downtowns thriving.

    Mulshine rides the train

  • And salivates at the gossip.

    The Solomon Dwek Show

  • Bob Braun on the crook, the tapes and the code words.

    What price Powerball?

  • Star Ledger editorial on the sleazy, duping-the-poor state-run exercise whose tix just went on sale today. I'd add: regressive tax.

You can look, but you won't find

  • NJ tax forms are no longer available atcher public library. You'll come up dry at the P.O., too.

So why is it that the politicians bow so low to Catholic concerns?

  • 124 parishes in the Diocese of Camden will be whittled down to just 70 by December, 2010.

Why is it that the politicians bow so low... (0.00 / 0)
in part because 40% of NJ residents are Catholic.

    Perhaps (0.00 / 0)
but anyone who has spoken to an "average" Catholic in New Jersey knows that they rarely toe the Catholic line.  Plus, there is a vast difference between the number of people who will say they are Catholic and the number who will show up on Sunday and support their parish...which is why Camden is cutting back to only 70 parishes.

That sort of problem is not reserved for only the Catholic Church, either.

    There are 5 dioceses in NJ (0.00 / 0)
An article that talks about the struggles of a single diocese that happens to include one the most impoverished cities in the country that has seen its citizens leaving in droves for the last three decades is not necessarily reflective of the entire state.  Besides what is an "average" Catholic and what do you mean by "towing the Catholic line"?

    Response (0.00 / 0)
When I say "towing the Catholic line" I mean people who are implementing Catholic doctrine exactly as the Church hands it out.  Very few, as a percentage, do that.  The proof?  Note how many people actually show up at Mass on any given week.  Then further subtract those who do show up but continue to use birth control of any type.  Then further subtract any of those who violate any other Catholic doctrine as a matter of course.

I put "average" in quotes because there is no way to average people.  But, if you gather a thousand Catholics at random, you'll find more disagreement with Catholic doctrine than agreement.  This includes a number of Catholic clergy, as well, as the ongoing efforts of the Pope to crack down on dissident nuns would indicate.

Is it your contention that any diocese here in New Jersey is not having financial difficulties?  It would be an odd contention given the number of Catholic schools that have had to close due to inadequate parish finances.  Low attendance and struggling finances are a characteristic of pretty much all churches in the last two years, and for most of them for an even longer period of time.
