Jeff Tittel makes his own bed, whines that it is uncomfortable

by: Adam L

Thu Jan 28, 2010 at 10:30:00 AM EST

During the Gubernatorial campaign, there were few people who were more outspoken (and hyperbolic) against Governor Corzine than the Sierra Club's Jeff Tittel.  He ignored the fact that then-candidate Chris Christie vowed to "gut" the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.  He pretended that Christie's views which left no doubt about how low of a priority initiatives such as green energy, clean air and water as well as protecting our natural resources were didn't exist.  He minimized Corzine's efforts that made New Jersey consistently in the top 2 or 3 states in the entire nation when it came to the very issues that his Sierra Club held dear.

Whether it was naiveté or a personal grudge or an honest belief that Chris Daggett could win - we won't know.  What we do know is that his outspoken and shortsighted (not to mention oftentimes flat wrong) criticism was going to come back and hurt the very organization that he is supposed to be looking out for was as obvious as Christie not being able to keep many of his campaign promises.

So predictably, when Christie signed Executive Orders that give authority for governmental official to roll back regulations regarding the air we breathe and water we drink, Tittel complained that this was unfair and that the Orders were an attack against our environmental protections.

While Tittle may very well be precisely on point, this should come as no surprise.  Whether Tittel likes it or not, much of this blame falls squarely on his shoulders.  He was the one who was reckless in his "strategy" during the campaign - trying to settle some political score instead of looking out for the longer term and the bigger picture.  Unfortunately for the rest of New Jerseyans, our air and water very well may be more toxic and less safe due to Tittel's shortsighted and petty behavior a few months ago.

Personal attack is inappropriate (0.00 / 0)
Adam - The bigger problem here you totally ignore is the affirmative endorsement of Christie by the NJ Environmental Federation and their total silence as he contradicts his campaign promises and begins dismantling both DEP and regulatory protections.

I worked with and am old friend of Jeff, but I have been harshly critical of him under the Corzine administration, particularly for his praise and defense of Lisa Jackson when she either failed to deliver or rolled back protections. But I have confined that criticism to specific policy and political judgment disagreements, not like the whining fact free personal broadside attack you unload here.

Frankly, it is an embarrassment to Blue Jersey.

Jeff's (and other's) criticisms of Corzine  preceded the Daggett endorsement.

And BTW, Corzine's record on his achievements was grossly exaggerated, which is far worse that some of Mr. Tittel's  criticisms.

thanks for your thoughts (4.00 / 2)
we have been highly critical of Tittel's actions over the past few months, and this is hardly a "personal attack".  His choice of attacking Corzine relentlessly as "the worst environmental Governor in history" and other similar exaggerations opened him up for criticism such as this.

He is the one who made these choices.  Christie was crystal clear about his views and intent.  For Tittel to start complaining now is disingenuous at best.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

Not a Personal Attack (4.00 / 2)

It's entirely reasonable to criticize Tittel.   Yes, the NJ environmental federation should be criticized as well, but they're not in the news as much.

If they wrote an OpEd, I would criticize them as well, although I don't recall them making the number or the scope of attacks as Tittel did against Corzine either.

For example (3.75 / 4)
Saying that Jeff Tittel is a microphone whore and a bitch would be a personal attack.  Addressing someone for what they say on the public record is not.  I'm not saying that Tittel is or isn't, just making the distinction clear.

Thank God Thurman is back. (4.00 / 3)

This diary is sadly, completely justified. (0.00 / 0)
Jeff may be your friend, but he is a MAJOR reason, I and many of my environmentally minded friends NO LONGER are members of the Sierra Club.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

If you think this election had anything to do.. (2.00 / 1)
Ok, so I get that "environmental" issues are very near and dear to "progressives", but if anyone here thinks the endorsement of the Sierra Club had anything to do with the outcome of the election, they are kidding themselves.

This election was about financial matters, "Its the economy stupid".  It was about the failure of property tax reform.  It was about the 800% toll hike plan.  It was about a Governor who seemed to be out of touch with the average taxpayer -- the same independents who went for Christie because he campaigned on reigning in costs.

I am sorry, but to the "independent voter" who voted for Obama then Christie, Jeffs endorsements did not have much affect.

So What? Adam's Point Stands. Tittel Blew it. n/t (4.00 / 1)

That's not the point, AYWM. (3.00 / 1)
Thanks for your thoughts, AYWM, but no one is saying that Jeff Tittel swung the election all by his lonesome. There were a hundred reasons for the outcome.

But he is responsible for the part he's responsible for. More than any other single person in New Jersey's enviro swim, he is a recognizable face and name, because he does speak out so much, and so often. Nothing wrong with that, but given the role he chose for himself, it's completely impossible to hear anything he says now in any other context but the one he created himself.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

[ Parent ]
....and your point is? (0.00 / 0)
so we shouldn't criticize anyone that wouldn't have swayed the election?

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

While Corzine lost, the public question (0.00 / 0)
giving money for historic and environmental preservation PASSED.  In NJ the environment is not simply a Rep or Dem issue.  It CROSSES party lines. It is critical.  The Sierra club quotes were in nearly EVERY Christie ad.

You are dreaming if you think it didn't matter.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
