Obama talks about (0.00 / 0)
all the ways that they have cut taxes after talking about how everyone hated the bank bailout, comparing it to a root canal.

President calls for a new jobs bill here tonight (0.00 / 0)
he says the true engine of job creation will always be america's businesses to a resounding standing ovation.  no you lie shout out there.

he said gov't can create the conditions necesssary for business to expand.  Start with small businesses.

Proposes taking $30 billion (0.00 / 0)
of money wall st banks have re-payed and use it to help community banks give small business the credit they need to stay afloat. Also proposing new small business tax credit for hire new workers. Eliminating all capital gains taxes on small business investment and provide tax incentive for all large and small business to invest in new plants and equipment.

Slash tax breaks (0.00 / 0)
for companies that ship jobs overseas and create tax breaks to create jobs in America. Says the House has passed a jobs bill that includes some of these steps and he urges the Senate to do the same this year and he knows they will.

Follow live tweets from members of Congress (4.00 / 1)
The hill has this to let you follow live tweets from members of Congress.

How long should we wait (0.00 / 0)
to those who make claims now is not the time, how long should America put it's future on hold.  Washington has been telling us to wait for decades, even as the problems got worse.  He ticks off other countries that aren't waiting. Says they're not playing for 2nd place and he doesn't accept 2nd place for the United States of America.

As hard (0.00 / 0)
it's time to get serious about fixing the problems that are hampering our growth. Start with financial reform.  Says he's not interested in punishing banks, but in protecting economy because a strong healthy market lets business get credit and create new jobs.  That can only happen if we guard against same recklessness that almost brought down economy. Can't allow financial institutions that take risks that threaten the whole economy.

If a bill (0.00 / 0)
that ends up on his desk doesn't mean real reform, he'll send it back until we get it right.

Talks about clean energy (0.00 / 0)
mentioning safe clean nuclear power plants being built, making tough decisions about opening new areas for offshore oil and gas development, continued investment in biofuels and clean coal technologies and yes it means passing a comprehensive energy and climate bill with incentives that will make clean energy the profitable kind of energy in America. Again he points out that the House passed it and he's looking forward to the Senate passing it.

Talks about evidence on climate change (0.00 / 0)
even if you doubt the evidence, providing incentives for clean energy and energy efficiency is the right thing to do for our future.  The nation that leads the clean economy will be the nation that leads the global economy and america needs to be that nation.

Need to export more of our goods (0.00 / 0)
more products we make and send to other countries, the better.  Will double exports in the next 5 years, an increase that will support 2 million jobs in America.  To help meet this goal, launching national export initiative to help farmers and small businesses increase their exports.  Need to seek new markets aggressively.  If America sits on the sidelines while other nations create jobs, we lose the opportunity to create jobs on our shores. realizing those benefits mean enforcing those agreements so our trading partners play by the rules.

Invest in skills (0.00 / 0)
and education of our people. Instead of funding status quo, only invest in reform. In 21st century, the best anti-poverty program around is a world class education.

Success of our children (0.00 / 0)
cannot depend more on where they live than on their potential. A high school diploma no longer guarantees a good job.  Urges Senate to follow house and pass bill to revitalize community college which are career pathway to children of so many families.  To make college more affordable, end unwarranted taxpayer subsidies that go to banks for student loans.  Give that money to 10K grant to families and increase pell grants.  In USA, no one should go broke because they chose to go to college.

Finally moves to health insurance reform (0.00 / 0)
Says lets clear a few things up.  Says he didn't choose the issue to get an issue under his belt and by now it should be obvious i didn't take it on because it's good politics. lists reasons of why he took it on including the stories of people who struggle with and without care. Lists some of the things that the health insurance plan would do and points to Michele Obama's work on childhood obesity.

Says approach (0.00 / 0)
would allow people to keep their doctor and plan.  Would reduce costs and bring down deficit by as much as $1 trillion over next two decades. So this is a complex issue and the longer it was debated, the more skeptical people became.  he takes his share of the blame for explaining it more clearly and the process left most americans wondering what's in it for me.  By the time he finishes speaking, more americans will lose their health insurance and lists all the other problems that will continue if we don't fix healthcare.  He says he will not walk away from these americans and netiher should the people in this chamber.

[ Parent ]
If anyone has a better plan (4.00 / 1)
he says let me know. Says he's eager to see it.  He asks Congress not to walk away from reform, not now, not when we are so close.  Let us find a way to come together and finish the job for the American people.  Says lets get it done.

On government spending (4.00 / 1)
wants to start by setting the record straight.  In 2000, we had a surplus of $200 billion.  By the time he took office, had 1 year office of over $1 trillion and projected deficiti of $ billion over next decade.  On top of that, recession put $3 trillion hole in budget.  This was all before he walked in the door. If we had taken office in ordinary times, I would have liked nothing more than to bring down deficit.  Our efforts to stop depression have added to deficit.  He's absolutely convinced that was the right things to do. Federal gov't needs to tighten belts like families do.  Proposes specific steps to pay for trillion to rescue economy by freezing spending for 3 years, listing the exceptions. Says he will enforce this discipline by veto if need be.

no restrain on weapons, wars, etc. (0.00 / 0)
pretty sad, especially when he blamed them for the deficits.

Talks about bi-partisan fiscal commission (0.00 / 0)
modeled on proposal from Jud Gregg and Kent Conrad.  Can't be a Washington gimmick that pretends we solve a problem. Yesterday the Senate blocked a bill to pass this, so he'll issue executive order because he refuses to pass onto another generation of Americans. And when the vote comes tomorrow, the Senate should restore Pay as you go law was big reason for record surpluses in 1990's. Says the freeze won't take effect til next year when the economy is stronger to people who says you can't freeze now.  Says that's how budgeting works.  If we don't take meaningful steps to reign in debt, could damage markets, increase cost of borrowing and jeopardize recovery. On the right, make fewer investments in people, eliminate more regulations, deficits will go away.  The problem is that's what we did for eight years. That's what helped us into this crisis.  Rather than fight same tired battles, it's time to try someting new.  Invest in people without leaving mountain of debt. Try common sense, a novel concept.  We have to recognize we face more than deficit of dollars right now, we face a deficit of trust.  Deep and corrosive doubts about how Washington works.

Time to require lobbyists (0.00 / 0)
to disclose each contact they make on behalf of client with his admin or Congress. Put strict limits in what they give to candidates referring to Supreme Court decision that he believes will open the flood gates to special interests to spend without limit in elections. I don't think American elections should be bankrolled by most powerful interests or foreign entities.  Urges passage of bill to help correct that.

Earmark reform (0.00 / 0)
D's and R's have trimmed some of spending, embraced some meaningful change, but restoring public trust requires more.  Calling on Congress to publish all earmark requests on single website before there is a vote so American people can see how money is being spent. None of these reforms will happen if we don't reform how we will work with one another.

What frustrates American people (0.00 / 0)
is where every day is election day.  Where only goal is who can get the most embarrassing headline from the other side. Neither party should delay or obstruct every bill just because they came and he says he's speaking to both parties.

People expect us to solve problems (0.00 / 0)
not run for the hills.  If the Republican leadership is going to insist that 60 votes in Senate are required to do any business, then responsibility to govern is yours as well. Saying no to everything may be good short term politics, but it's not leadership.  Sent here to serve people, not our ambitions. Says he'll address meeting of House Republicans, wants monthly meetings with D & R leadership, says he knows they can't wait.

talks about Security (0.00 / 0)
not interested in re-litigating the past. Says all of us love this country, all are committed to defense, so put aside school yard talk and false choice between protecting people and giving up values, and do what it takes to defend our nation to forge more hopeful future for America and the world.

Says he's ending Iraq war (4.00 / 1)
will have all our troops out of Iraq this august.  We will support and partner with Iraqi people, but make no mistake.  This war is ending and all of our troops are coming home.

Tonight, all of our men and women in uniform (0.00 / 0)
have to know that they have our respect, our gratitude, our full support.  Just as they need resources in war, we have responsibility to support them when they come home. Largest increase in investment for veterans last year, that's why we're building 21st Century VA and that's why Jill Biden is joining national commitment to support military families.

Threat of nuclear weapons (0.00 / 0)
has embraced strategy to reduce spread of weapons and seek a world without.  To reduce stockpile, US and Russia completing negotiations on farthest reaching agreement in two decades.  At April's nuclear summit, bring 44 nations together behind clear goal.  Secure all loose nukes around world in 4 years so they don't fall into hands of terrorists.

North Korea and Iran (0.00 / 0)
As Iran's leaders continue to ignore their obligations, they too will face growing consequences.  That is a promise. That's the leadership we are providing.  Engagement that advances common security for all.

Talks about (0.00 / 0)
10K Americans working with other nations to help Haiti rebuild.

America must always stand (0.00 / 0)
on the side of freedom and human dignity. Always.

Chuck Todd gives this note (4.00 / 1)
on twitter: Just crossed the one hour mark: Only Bill Clinton (every SOTU) and LBJ (just one) have given SOTUs longer than 60 minutes.

Says he will work with Congress (0.00 / 0)
this year to repeal don't ask don't tell.  Crack down on pay violation laws so women get equal pay for equal day of work. And continue to work of fixing broken immigration to secure borders, enforce laws and ensure everyone who pays by rules can play.

Talks about why there is cynicism (0.00 / 0)
and disappointment.  Talks about his slogan of change we can believe in, but many Americans aren't sure if we believe we can change or that he can deliver.  He never suggested change would be easy or that he could do it alone. Democracy in nation of 300 million people can be noisy and messy and complicated. When you try to do big things it stirs passion and controversy. We can try to keep poll #'s high and get through next election, but if people made that decision 50, 100 or 200 years ago we wouldn't be here.  Even when success was uncertain, to do what it took to keep the dream of this nation alive for their children and grandchildren.  Our administration has had some political setbacks and some were deserved, but he wakes up every day knowing they are nothing compared to setbacks facing families. Despite all these setbacks, that spirit of determination and optimism lives on.

We don't quit (4.00 / 1)
I don't quit, lets cease this moment to carry the dream forward and strengthen this union once more.  Thank you and God bless America.

I'm curious to know what people thought of the staging before a live audience. The bar was obviously set low after Bobby Jindal last year.
