Check out Jon Runyan's tax deduction; you won't believe it!

Philly.com reports former Philadelphia Eagle Jon Runyan, a Republican candidate for NJ's 3ed congressional district, is getting a break on his property taxes for his lavish Mount Laurel homestead - thanks in part to his four donkeys.  Runyan paid $57,000 in taxes last year on five of his acres, which contain his home.  But on most of his property - 20 acres - he paid $468 in taxes, according to township records.  On his application for a farmland assessment in July, Runyan said he uses five acres as grazing land for his donkeys and 15 for timber, harvesting seven cords of firewood that he sold for $810.

Chris Russell, Runyan's campaign manager said, "He considers himself a steward of his land, and that's what farmland assessment is supposed to do."

So who was "stewarding" his land while the Jets defense was knocking him down on his very ample tush?

....i'll give big Jon a pass... if he promises to grow some medicinal herbs on one of his 25 acres.

don't give him a pass (0.00 / 0)
I am sure that he will sell an acre's worth of marajuana for more than $810.  Heck, he will probably finance his campaign on the profits.

Is there anything in the medicinal marajuana law that requires the pot being grown and sold for medicinal purposes to be Jerseyfresh?

If so, maybe they should rewrite the farmland assessment law to allow for marijuana farming.

Republicans made a big deal over Karcher's tax breaks (4.00 / 2)
for the tree farm on her property and used it against her! If Runyan gets the GOP nod ... let's not give him a bye on this!

donkeys and not elephants on his farm? What kind of a Repugnican is he?

Christie Whitman (0.00 / 0)
got a farmland tax break for selling a cord of wood to her brother-in-law every year.  She showed off her sheep to the TV crew that came calling, but didn't even know what kind of sheep they were.

Some farmers, these!

Hunterdon County (4.00 / 1)
is full of these stewards of the land welfare recipients. And they're in both parties, I assure you.

I am strongly pro-farmer, but in virtually all these cases these are essentially wealthy outer-ring suburbanites who insist on a ring of lovely green around their houses, and on your dime.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

The dollar amount to obtain an agricultural tax assessment (0.00 / 0)
has not changed in years.  Perhaps the dollar amount of agricultural products produced should be updated to ensure that the assessment is actually going to farmers and not wealthy posers who are scamming the system to increase their own net wealth.

In NJ, $500 (4.00 / 1)
NYS, $10,000 in income to claim farmland assessment. in NJ, 5 acres, in NYS, 10. I know which one I think is more realistic. And if there are any actual farmers yielding less that $10k in gross income from their land, they can be grandfathered

Time we go in synch with reality. Farmless Assessment is just a gimme to the rich, regardless of their party. Dems do it, too.
