Medical Marijuana in New Jersey. Finally.

by: Jay Lassiter

Tue Jan 12, 2010 at 02:30:40 PM EST

When the NJ Senate and Assembly overwhelmingly passed a medical marijuana bill yesterday it put the Garden State in line to be the 14th state in the union to decriminalize cannabis for sick people.

Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll has the QOTD in this one for sure.

I've posted so many videos on this site and elsewhere I can't hardly remember them all, but this issue is possibly the most satisfying day I've has as an activist since the Obama/Alder double victory.

So take a minute to meet the heros of this battle.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Jay - have you ever considered baking brownies? (0.00 / 0)
I don't know how often you have to take your medication, but it seems to me that you can afford the calories, but not the damage to your lungs.

It's great that MPC is on the right side of this issue, but... (3.00 / 1)
...it is a shame that he cannot take the same enlightened approach about a doctor-patient relationship when it comes to a woman's reproductive decision-making process.

    GREAT VIDEO JAY (4.00 / 1)

    Does anyone (0.00 / 0)
have a link to the rollcall on this? Curious how everyone voted.

...voted YES including Baroni, Bateman, S. Kean, Singer, Pennacchio, and Ciesla.  the tally was 25-18.

In the Assembly it was 48-14.  (four Republicans voted for the bill: Assemblymen Carroll and O'Scanlon and Assemblywomen Casagrande & Vandervalk).

    Which Democrats voted No? (0.00 / 0)
Those numbers lead me to think that there was significant Democratic opposition or abstention.

    A lot didn't vote at all (0.00 / 0)
I think that the discussion involving the abstentions on the marriage equality vote highlighted an age old practice of taking a stance on as few issues as possible. That's probably why it takes many years to even get one of these issues to a vote.

Without casting a vote, they may have been in favor of or opposed, but we will never know. Of course, these final days votes only allowed a vote within about 30 seconds. At 8pm+ some members may have dozed off, stepped out of the room, or simply called it a day.

I am very happy to see that it passed. I am just anxious to see it signed.
