Senators, Which side are you on?

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed Jan 06, 2010 at 04:09:04 PM EST

We've got a copy of an Open Letter from Westboro Baptist Church, the remarkably misdirected people who bring the God Hates Fags movement to New Jersey.

It's an ugly letter. Read it anyway. Send it to your legislators. They have a choice to make: Are they going to stand with you, with Julian Bond, with civil rights advocates like Rep. John Lewis who stood at the side of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and straight married Catholics like Parsippany's Betty Wyka who spoke so movingly that same sex marriage won't hurt her traditional marriage?

Or do they stand with these people, the name-callers, who call the President "the Beast" and clergy members "false prophets?" Who lapse into anti-semitism like it's nothing, and threaten doom like they're sure God speaks only to them? Who hate their countrymen so viciously that they cannot bring them selves to spell America with a capital A.

If they vote No, this is who will be celebrating:

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

Best not to make Westboro Baptist folks (0.00 / 0)
out to be representative as anyone other than themselves. They are despised across the political spectrum. There are better reasons that legislators should vote yes on marriage equality.

I was one of the counter protesters out in front of Cherry Hill East that cold day in December when the WBC came with their disgusting signs and chants.  It was the day of the assembly committee hearing and votes.  I was struck by the concept that as long as certain groups of people don't have full rights in our state, that they will forever be vulnerable to both organized hate like the WBC and the even more cowardly personal hate by the losers that type disgusting comments on the Courier Post website.  I think it entirely appropriate that Rosi brings up WBC today and gives our politicians something to contemplate as they make their way to trenton.

Thanks, Lori (0.00 / 0)
Small correction: Dec. 7 was the Senate committee, not the Assembly.

It's a good bet that WBC staged their little God Hates Fags tantrum in Cherry Hill that day to siphon off people who might otherwise go to Trenton from that gay-friendly town. Nevertheless the response to WBC foolishness was pretty great from you Cherry Hillers.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.
