"I know you're not scared of me, and I'm not scared of you."

There's a minor blog controversy over what Ohio Democratic Senate candidate Jennifer Brunner told the National Journal

The DSCC has all but written her [Brunner] off, however, and the establishment has turned to [Democrat Lee] Fisher. In fact, Brunner said when she spoke with DSCC Chair Bob Menendez in Sept., he first told her that he "didn't want to see a Democratic candidate at the end of the primary with zero dollars," and he followed up that his organization would go into the state to work against a candidate perceived as "being negative in the primary or not raising enough money."

Brunner said she responded: "If you do that, the women of Ohio will never forgive you." Menendez, she said, retorted: "I know you're not scared of me, and I'm not scared of you."

I'm glad there's a primary and that Ohio Democrats will have a chance to choose the best candidate. Brunner has done a lot of good work and if many activists think she'd be a better candidate I take that seriously. That said, I don't really sympathize with Brunner here. First of all, I don't see how making these complaints public is going to help her. Furthermore, Cleveland's Plain Dealer wonders why she's talking to the National Journal instead of an Ohio outlet. It seems like she is showing bad judgment as she finds herself losing, threatening the DSCC and complaining in the press. Second, I can hardly expect Bob Menendez of New Jersey to think money isn't important. How am I supposed to be shocked and outraged?

Still, it would be nice someday to hear that Menendez, Rahm Emmanuel, or anyone in the DC power structure threatened conservative Democrats even once. It's all seems awfully one-sided, and so they shouldn't act so surprised the liberals on-line are in full revolt.

Let's Try To Look A Little Deeper Here..... (4.00 / 2)
....my sense is that the long knives are out for Brunner.  She's just "too honest".

The last thing the DSCC wants is another serious progressive in the Senate......they would (almost) rather lose the election.

We need to understand that real progressivism is anathema to both the Republican and the Democratic party establishments.

If Brunner wins in a primary, it will take the support of progressives throughout the nation to get her in the Senate.........the DSCC will try to compromise her, and if that doesn't work, she'll get lip service and a very few bucks.

Don't get me wrong, I like Bob Menendez.  As Hudson County pols go, the guy is an angel.......but I would much rather have a Bernie Sanders type in the office.

No one should ever think they are entitled to keep their job/power for life!!!

It's (supposed to be) all about doing what's best for ordinary PEOPLE!!!  Not just corporations and "contributors".

More From Brunner On This....... (4.00 / 1)

The first rule of politics is you never just tell the truth.

The truth makes people uncomfortable, and sometimes it hurts -- so politicians avoid it, even when it seems nonsense to do so. Why speak your mind when you can hire political consultants to coach you on a safe "message"? Why go with your gut when the political establishment wants you to stick to the party line?

I say that the first rule of politics is what's wrong with politics. That's why I won't follow it.

We've all seen where a lack of candor in politics gets us. Leaders who promise one thing but do another. Insiders making deals that seal their careers but sell out the public. Politicians acting against their better judgment because they think staying in office is how to make things better for the people they serve.

nice that she posted (0.00 / 0)
I don't see any actual "truth telling," but it's good she's for it. I look forward to following the campaign.
