Republicans Say The Darndest Things

In real life, Gerald Cardinale is a dentist.

In political life, he is a state senator who represents the 39th Legislative District. He also sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

We hope he is less rude to his patients than he was to Thomas Hoff Prol, whom he called a liar at the hearing on the Marriage Equality Monday. Yup, a liar. But that's just the short of it.

During the vote on whether or not to send the Freedom of Religion and Equality in Civil Marriage bill (S1967) to the full Senate for consideration, Senator Cardinale made a startlingly observation:

...if gays are allowed to marry, then others waiting on the sidelines would choose that lifestyle.

So, according to the good senator, the only thing that separates all heterosexuals from flipping teams is the right to marry. Yup, that's what he said.

My curiosity got the better of me, and I called his office to ask his source of this assertion. Much to my surprise, he called me back.

The senator was quite courteous, but woefully misinformed.

What is the source for your assertion that gay marriage will motivate more people to turn gay?
I asked.

A study from some [unnamed] group in France. That's why the French decided not to pass gay marriage,
he said.

Got it. The French also like Jerry Lewis, so go figure.

Cardinale continued,

Their Real Agenda [that's how I imagined the spelling in my head with a big R and big A]---is to teach young people about the gay lifestyle in school.

Finally, he said,

How do we know three people can't get married under this bill? Or a mother marries her son? Or maybe two people of the same gender in a non-sexual relationship getting married for the benefits? Know what I mean?.

I sought a clarification.

Two people of the same gender in a non-sexual relationship getting married? You mean like Felix and Oscar?

'Yup, like Felix and Oscar,"
he chuckled.
If there was an amendment to prevent that from happening, I would have supported this bill.

Wow! Is that all it would have taken to get his vote!

Just how did the Senator get so homophobic? Maybe it has something to do with being a dentist. Say 'Ah!.

BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAAHHAAHHAAHHHAHHAHHAHHAHHAHHAHHAahhahhhahwhahhahhahha .... Gerry, you're killin' me!

I think that Gerry is on to something (0.00 / 0)
I think that the marriage equality legislation should be amended to require marriage licenses to be renewed annually and married couples to have a sufficient amount of sex to qualify for renewal.  It is a shame that Joey didn't ask Gerry how much sex a couple should be required to have for their relationship to be qualify as a sexual relationship.  Heck, Gerry's idea could spawn a brand spanking new bureaucracy, not unlike the DMV or MVC or whatever they are calling it these days.

Before a couple can get a marriage license, they should be required to pass a written exam that is not dissimilar from the kinds of oral interviews that couples are subjected to when one member is a citizen and the other is not.

Once they have passed the written exam, the couple will be issued a learner's permit, allowing them to have sex, as long as they are supervised by someone who already has a marriage license.  After a certain amount of time, the couple will be required to go to the DMS (Division of Marriage and Sex) and pass a sexual exam, which will require both members of a prospective married couple to achieve an orgasm with the woman's body being monitored to ensure that she is not faking.

Once the couple passes the sexual exam, they can be issued a marrriage license, which will have to be renewed annually.  To prove that a couple had the requisite amount of sex, they would be required to videotape themselves having sex with a date and time stamp on the recording.

Gerry could resign from his Senate seat to become the Commissioner of the DMS and review all of the videos to his heart's content.  If that is all that it would take to get marriage equality passed, I say let's go for it.

Nah (3.50 / 2)
I don't think being a dentist would make him a homophobe.

It's the water in North Jersey.  I'm sure you read the article in the NYT which states that many folks are drinking polluted water from their taps.  They cited all kinds of pollutants (like arsenic and lead) and all kinds of diseases (including cancer).  I  believe the article was referenced in BJ.

Although the article of omitted a complete list of communities or links thereto, Ramsey, NJ was mentioned.

I know Cardinale doesn't live in Ramsey, but what's to say other northern jersey do not have similar conditions?

Then there's bottled water, which has its own problems.  Besides having a large carbon footprint, the plastic often contains BPH, which may harm infant deveopment and affect those with weak immune systems.

I believe both tap water and bottled water have the abilty to make people batshitcrazy.

Maybe Cardinale drinks too much water.  And he is my senator.

And Garrett is my Rep.

There's tainted water all over north jersey, I tells ya!

I approve of the Highlands Act for a lot of reasons, even though I'm not exactly sure what they are doing.  Has it helped NJ water or is the source of the polution elswhere?

As a safety precaution, I drink my Jack Daniels on the rocks - using filtered water for the ice.  It probably doesn't work, but its a far more pleasant way to go batshitcrazy.

How's that for a conspiracy theory?

Coincidence? I think not, Smarty ... stick with the pure grain alcohol and the unfiltered branch water ...

From all I can tell ... (0.00 / 0)
Cardinale doesn't drink water, he thinks he walks on it.

Of course, I don't have the experience of all those who have seen him in action for a longtime.

I can say, however, from long study of and sometime participation in arguments back-and-forth about homosexuality, gay sex, the Church, the Bible, psychology, pedagogy, and, of course, the latest, anthropology, that two things are the last bastion for bigots:

(1) public health - the most vitriolic and hate-filled stuff often comes under this heading
(2) "protect the children" - as if there were no gay kids to protect

If they suddenly start talking about those, out of the blue, then you have breached the moat and are inside the Castle walls...

what about the staights? (0.00 / 0)
If there was such an additional amendment it would most likely be unconstitutional if it only applied to same sex couples.

Does he not realize that opposite gender people can do the same? Or does he just not care when it is straight people? Or is he just making up excuses to cover for his crap personal reasons for a no vote.

Cardinale's Seat Is Seen As Secure...But.... (0.00 / 0)
I'll bet that there's a smart, dynamic, aggressive progressive in his district that can beat him.....especially if the rude, vicious and ugly remarks of Cardinale are used to make viral ads, so that everyone in his district gets to hear what kind of a homophobic cretin is "representing" them.

he is a dentist.... (0.00 / 0)
he has a talent for causing things pain...
people will pay him to be inhumane...

Has he been huffing the laughing gas?

It's not enough that he's shockingly uninformed about human motivation, but he's also shockingly misinformed about same-sex marriage in France.

As far as I can tell, France has never had a legislative vote on gay marriage. A slew of courts found they couldn't overrule Parliament on the issue, and the legislature later extended civil unions to gay couples.

Of course, civil unions ("solidarity pacts") in France apply to same and opposite-sex couples. You get most of the rights but not all of the rights of marriage - and, big shock, more straight couples are signing up for that rather than marriage because it's easier to dissolve.

During the hearing he insisted on getting names and addresses of everyone who treated anyone with a civil union badly, so he could "educate" them on the law. Perhaps we should send him an explanation of the situation in France so he can at least get his facts straight.

Here is the Q for Dr. Cardinale (0.00 / 0)
...that, if he should ever be forced to answer it, on record, could sink his boat in a minute.

"Do you think that homosexuals should repent and try to change their sexual orientation?"

Ooooh, wouldn't that just bring it home with him, potentially!

...while I'm thinking about it (0.00 / 0)
Here's another (sorry this sounds so script-like, but you go around the block a few times with bigots, you learn the terrain, quickly):

"What do you think should be taught in schools about gays and lesbians, how and when?"

If he says, "nothing", then:

"Given how well known it is that abstinence-only programs have failed, why isn't your position one of active, knowing hostility toward gays and lesbians?"

If he says, "respect" or goes off on a tangent about anti-bullying, then:

"How can you teach that, without talking about gay and lesbian couples?"

"Teach young people about the homosexual lifestyle" (0.00 / 0)
At this risk of overposting, this needs to be responded to.

First, "homosexual lifestyle" is perjorative.  Gays and Lesbians have full and productive lives, not "lifestyles".  A "lifestyle" is a choice, and ...

Second, whether any Senator votes "yes" or "no", on any given day, gay kids and gay couples will still be here, all over America.  Therefore, the question of what to tell the kids doesn't depending on the passage of this bill, in New Jersey, and, as we know from documents secured from opposition strategy, it is a canard used to get people motivated to oppose civil rights.

Homosexuality is a fact and it is appropriate for school, within bounds.  We are tired of the 'war on science' and fact.  Parents can teach morality, but schools teach facts.

Kids who learn about homosexuality from hate-filled epithets on the playground, rather than from positive role-models, are a public menace.  Some of them go on to take guns and kill other kids, as happened to Lawrence King.  Do you want to be the parent of the kid who did that, just so you could 'make a point' about gays getting married in NJ?  Seriously?!

There is more, when you put your mind to it, but that will do, ...

France (0.00 / 0)
Interesting that Cardinale cited the French.  By the way, the study is "Report on the Family and the Rights of Children" by the French National Assembly, Paris, January 25, 2006.  If Cardinale is going to accept the French decision for maintaining a ban on same sex marriage, then perhaps he would accept the reasoning behind it - and then move forward towards putting NJ law in line with France.  All he would have to do is:
1) Allow for "common law marriage" in New Jersey;
2) Amend the civil union law to apply to heterosexual couples;
3) Ban adoption by unmarried heterosexuals;
4) Require judicial approval for infertility treatments; and
5) Prohibit surrogate motherhood;

The same report recommends:
1) "Lift the veil of secrecy" of closed adoptions;
2) Raising the minimum age for marriage to 18;
3) "Delegation of parental authority" to judges

It also needs to be noted that France:
1) Allows gays to serve openly in the military; and
2) Discrimination based on sexual orientation is banned.

The report, by the way, was published in 2006.  But in 2008, the French ban on single AND gay adoptions was overturned by the EU (see story).  It cost France fourteen thousand euros in punitive damages and another twenty thousand in legal bills.
