Where are black ministers?

by: ken bank

Wed Dec 09, 2009 at 03:45:42 PM EST

Given Rice and Turner's opposition to ME I wonder if they are influenced by religious beliefs or what.  Where are the black ministers, Reginald Jackson and others, who always involve themselves in electoral politics having endorsed Corzine this year (after a substantial payment was made to their fund) and Christie Whitman in 1993?  Have they taken a stance for, against or neutral on ME?

I've always assumed, perhaps mistakenly, that most black belonged to liberal congregations, so I find it difficult to imagine why some black legislators, in safe districts, would turn their backs on the gay community.

Equal Rights is a color issue to them (3.00 / 1)
This group is very liberal when it comes to fighting for "just causes" for "their "people. ( their words ,not mine!)

Now you see their true "colors" .

If it is not an inner city issue ,they could care less. If it is not  a "black" issue they could care less.

You definitely do not want these people covering your back. They sell out to the highest bidder.

I give Rice credit. He does not like gay marraige and that is the end of the story. For the black ministers however ,if there is no money in it for them  they could care less.

Nia Gill is a straight shooter. Turner is a phony bigot.

I hope everyone remembers who the backstabbers are so that in the future you do not support their causes.

Civil Rights Issues (0.00 / 0)

Without a doubt, the primary civil rights issue will always be the 1950-60s battle for equality for people of color in the US.   Because of that, I think a lot of African-Americans regard the civil rights movement as theirs and some resent the comparisons between their struggle and other struggles (like for marriage equality).  It's been well-documented that support in the African-American community for bans on gay marriage has been higher than for other liberal groups (for example, California's referendum would not have passed if the percentage of pro-ban voters in the African-Americans had been at the same level as other liberal demographic groups).

I disagree with this feeling of "ownership" of the civil rights issue by some African-Americans, but then again, I'm not African-American.   But to an outsider, such views only lower the achievements of the 1950-60s and demean the moral integrity of its leaders.  I can only hope that through continued argument (not name-calling), we can persuade more African-Americans that this fight is their fight.

Together, all of us will succeed in achieving our goals.  Divided, we will achieve none of them.
