Taking the wrong message away from the election

by: Jason Springer

Tue Nov 24, 2009 at 10:00:00 AM EST

The Asbury Park Press takes a look at how the election has colored the debate over Marriage Equality for our Legislators:
A poll released last week showed that New Jerseyans narrowly support gay marriage.

But enthusiasm for the bill has waned since Christie, a social conservative, beat Corzine by 100,000 votes on Nov. 3. The election was widely viewed as a referendum on high property taxes, strangling state debt and continued unemployment...

So what is the message that our Legislators take away from this loss as the logical reaction next step:
...making some lawmakers skittish about taking on a potentially divisive issue like marriage equality.
No wonder our state is in trouble. Talk about taking the wrong message away from the election. Rather than addressing the real reasons for defeat, some believe it's time for retreat on a civil rights issue central to the party's progressive appeal.  Instead of offering real solutions to our mounting problems, Democrats in the Legislature leave all of us - gay and straight alike - holding the bag.

I'm for ME (0.00 / 0)

I'm straight, with a wife and child.

One has to ask:  Do the Republicans turn on their base after an electoral defeat?   No, they don't.  So why are the Democrats so eager to turn on part of theirs?

Personally, I've made the commitment to not give one more dime to the Democratic party in New Jersey until ME is passed.   It's outrageous how some Democrats (do I hear Sweeney?) are backpedaling on this issue.

Absolutely a line in the sand (0.00 / 0)
Straight, raised two kids as a single dad, and am in what looks like it will be a long-term relationship with a lovely woman.

This is the absolute wrong-time for NJ Democrats to turn their backs on civil and human rights.  What do we stand for as Democrats if not equality under law?

We can support civil rights and the inherent worth and dignity of all people at the same time we tackle economic issues and fiscal responsibility.

Sarlo and Sweeny will lead NJ right into Sarah Palin's column in 2012 if they don't stand for principle and instead pander to the politics of fear and difference.
