Quote of the Day: Dick Codey Edition

by: Rosi Efthim

Mon Nov 23, 2009 at 04:18:49 PM EST

Steve Sweeney, who spent his summer lining up votes and making agreements, was - as expected - voted President of the NJ State Senate a little more than an hour ago.

Walking out of the 2nd floor caucus room, here's what Codey had to say about what happened behind closed doors, as he was forced to give up the role of Senate President that he has held since 2002. Star-Ledger:

A lot of blood on the floor there.

Big day at the statehouse today. The lame duckiest. Leadership votes: Sheila Oliver's the new Speaker of the Assembly, first African-American woman elected to that office. Joe Cryan is the new Majority Leader. Mike Doherty is sworn in to the Senate.

And more than 300 supporters of marriage equality crowded into the statehouse, beating out the opposition by 4-1. Pictures here. And here.

It can't be easy (0.00 / 0)
to get a reporter in your face just after you leave that room.  Both sides were more gracious in their official comments.

Codey:

"I want to extend my congratulations to the new Senate President-elect Steve Sweeney and the new Senate Majority Leader-elect Barbara Buono, as well as the new Assembly Speaker-elect Sheila Oliver and the new Assembly Majority Leader-elect Joe Cryan.  I wish them all the best as they take over the helm of the 214th Legislature.

"We have a lot of extraordinary challenges that lie ahead and I look forward to working cooperatively with the new leadership to help tackle the pressing problems facing our state.

"It's been a great honor to serve as the leader of the Senate Democratic Majority for the past eight years.  This has, without question, been one of the greatest experiences of my life and I'm proud of the many progressive accomplishments we have made on behalf of the residents of New Jersey.

And Sweeney didn't take the bait, when told about Codey's initial comment:

"It will be a tough act to follow Dick Codey in this role," said Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney (D-West Deptford), who will formally take the role of senate president in January.

Codey (D-Roseland) who tried to fend off Sweeney until the end, told The Ledger that there was "blood on the floor" in the caucus meeting where Democrats elected Sweeney.  Sweeney did not return fire.

"He was more than a gentleman.  He's a very class individual and he's shown that all the way through," said Sweeney.

Whatever people feel about Dick Codey, there were many positive steps taken expansion of healthcare coverage to repeal the death penalty and more that occurred under his watch.

Good point. (0.00 / 0)
But the driver of healtcare expansion (Sen. Vitale), apparently has been replaced as well... By Loretta Weinberg no less...
