Progressive Lobby Day for Marriage Equality - 300 of us, less than 75 of them

by: Jay Lassiter

Mon Nov 23, 2009 at 09:35:56 AM EST

Hell yes, it's on. And if any of you Blue Jersey readers are down there advocating for parity in our marriage laws, by all means chime in with your own comments, pictures or a diary of your own. - - Promoted from the diaries by Rosi

Update 12:01pm 300 pro-equality lobbyists - gay and straight - showed up on our side, with people still coming. Fewer than 75 people showed up to tell your state legislators to keep marriage only for us straight folks. 300 is 4 times 75, babies. Fierce turnout!

Update! 11:44am Our press conference begins at noon.  Video to follow.

Update! 11:08am.  Senator Cardinale just arrived.  He's at his irrepressible best which means all is well with the world.  One thing I've noticed about our opponents is their thinking is a generation behond  for a good reason:  They tend to be older.  I'm thirty-seven and I'm an elder statesman on my side.  On their team,  I'd be the youngest buck.

Update!  10:20 am and the pro-equality crowd is so massive that we're still filing through security.  In fact the progressive coalition's now filled yet another committee room to capacity. The pro-marriage crowd looks young and vital while the haters have a look that says "time is NOT on our side."

It's 9:20 am and it's officially on.  If juicy lame duck is you're thing, the State house is the place for you.

The Senate Judiciary hearing room is packed to max with marriage equality friend and foe.

But little do they know, we have reinforcements.  See below.

If you can't make it personally, maybe you can make some phone calls.  You guys know the drill:  Sweeney and Sarlo need to hear from you.  Every day.

why can't I recommend this? (4.00 / 1)
wish I could be there but am home with the baby as the nanny is sick....planning on calling O'Toole at least to say that it should come to a vote - regardless of what his vote is.

Get the facts about right wing lightweight politician Chris Christie

our massive crowd .... (4.00 / 2)
.... is too big for the State house.  It's 11:02 and we're STILL milling in.

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

    Hopeful (0.00 / 0)
Your new LoBiondo signature is funny as hell. See, that's what I need in life, a snappy signature.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

    Field of Dreams (0.00 / 0)
Picture #2 I love best. Reminds me of the last shot of Field of Dreams. Remember? The movie ends just as the field becomes real for everybody. And people just start driving there, because they have to. That's what that phot reminds me of, with the rally already started, and people in the background still coming.

That field was in Iowa. You know, Iowa. Where they already have marriage equality ...

    I wanted to go there in 2004 (0.00 / 0)
When a bunch of us were in Iowa, volunteering for the Dean campaign for the caucuses, I really wanted to get assigned to the area where the actual Field of Dreams is located so that I could get a quick glance at the place, thinking that there was a very good chance that this might be my only trip to Iowa in my lifetime.  Alas, it was way too far away from Des Moines and was being taken care of by a satellite office, so it was not meant to be.

Hopefully, there will be another Presidential candidate in my lifetime who inspires me enough to want to do that again, and whether it is in 2016, 2020, or so on, I'll be able to share the experience with my wife, Robin, who I met as a direct result of the Dean campaign ending when it did, and my children, Jacob and Rachael.

I know that this has nothing to do with marriage equality, but your reference to Field of Dreams made me think about Iowa 2004.  Even though the outcome wasn't what we had hoped for, it was still an incredible experience.  I wonder how different, if at all, the world would be today if Howard Dean had won Iowa and NH and actually went on to win the Democratic nomination?  Would we have won the Presidential election that year?  Would we have retaken the House and the Senate?  Would we have real healthcare today, instead of the watered-down nonsense that we will be lucky to get?

I once wrote an outline for a screenplay that I would like to write one day, which explores the question of how my life might have been different if, instead of ending his Presidential campaign in February 2004, Howard Dean ran as an independent candidate and asked his supporters to run for Senate, Congress, and other downballot offices throughout the country on his slate, and if in the long run, I am better off with history playing out how it did.

Thinking about it now, it would be just as much fun to write a time travel screenplay, where someone goes back in time and changes history so that Howard Dean becomes President in 2004 and then comes back to see how history unfolds after this change is made.  If anybody with an interest in screenwriting has any desire to work on either of these ideas with me at any point in the future, let me know.

was in the Congressional District where I managed a campaign for Congress in 2004. It literally comes out of nowhere as you are driving through the corn.  We spent 4th of July there as my candidate played a game with then candidate for President John Kerry.

Nearly all the cars in the parking lot had license plates from different states showing how far people came to see it.  They had a little stand for souvenirs too. I still have my framed poster up on the wall.

If you would have visited (3.00 / 1)
when Dean was running, you'd have met me because before the Congressional campaign, I was organizing that county along with a few others during the caucuses for the Dean campaign.  What an experience out there in the corn.

any idea of crowd numbers (0.00 / 0)
I so wanted to be there today, but my Real Estate Law midterm is a priority right now.

So how many GSE people showed up and how many of the bigots showed up?
