Monday Lobby Day for Marriage Equality

by: Jay Lassiter

Sat Nov 21, 2009 at 06:23:14 PM EST

Promoted from the diaries by Rosi

There's been a lot of buzz about the progressive coalition headed to Trenton Monday to lobby towards Marriage Equality.  (details below, hat tip Alison Pelzman)

I'll be there.  Lots of my friends and allies will be there too.  Will you?  Consider this a pre-lobby day open thread.

Rally with the Garden State Equality/BlueJerseyACLU-NJ/DFA in Trenton Monday, November 23.

We're meeting at:
Garden State Equality's New Jersey Office
110 W. State Street, Trenton
Monday, November 23, 2009
8:30 a.m.

If there's a day to take off work for a cause, it's Monday. Your day off could mean a lifetime of equality for families in New Jersey.

If you live in another state, just promise to help us raise hell, deal? If we win, we'll celebrate at the Atlantic City boardwalk. If we lose, we'll go to the casinos and take bets on what we'll see first: civil rights for New Jersey's gay families or a lesbian Miss America.

Will SJ vote as a bloc? (0.00 / 0)
Any thoughts on whether or not we should be concerned about the other Senate Democrats from South Jersey (Beach, Madden, Redd, Van Drew, and Whelan) voting as a bloc with Steve Sweeney on marriage equality?  Do you think that they will they be free to vote their consciences?

To answer your question Bert i do not know.

Right now i am just working on a visibility crowd for Monday.  I know you're a new daddy, Bert, but I hope you can make it.

Anyone else?

    I will be there in spirit (0.00 / 0)
Assuming that everything continues to progress well with Jacob and Robin, the three of us will be leaving the hospital on Monday.

Has anybody lobbied the Norcross brothers on this issue?  While neither will be voting on the issue per se, Donald will be replacing Joe Roberts in the Assembly and George more or less runs South Jersey politics.

The point has already been made that marriage equality will have economic benefits, but for the same reason that the NJBIA should be engaged from this angle, someone should take a look at the extent of the Norcross empire and figure out if there are benefits that they could reap from the passage of marriage equality legislation.

If nothing else, I for one would be will willing to cede the party bosses their corrupt political empires if it could be proven, for once, that they can be used for good as well as evil.

Not that they care, but if Steve Adubato and George Norcross, who have apparently conspired to take control of the legislature's leadership, were to make a joint public statement in favor of marriage equality, I won't say another bad thing about either of them or any other party boss ever again.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that I would be willing to join firstamend07 in pledging my service to the political machines into perpetuity if they were put to work for the benefit of the marriage equality effort.

From what I understand all are on their own.

If you understand the person and the District they represent then you can figure it out.

These are fiscal moderates but on social issues they are all over the place.
