Quote of the Day: "It wasn't the climate to re-elect anybody"

by: Jason Springer

Thu Nov 19, 2009 at 04:30:00 PM EST

During a panel discussion of former Governors in Atlantic City at the League of Municipalities yesterday, Brendan Byrne had this blunt take on Jon Corzine's candidacy:
"He should have withdrawn. It wasn't the climate to re-elect anybody," said former Democratic Gov. Brendan Byrne said to laughter at the panel discussion at the second day of the annual conference of municipal officials.
While I think it was an uphill climb from the start given the climate, I think the problems were complicated by another popular sentiment held by the panel, the fact that Jon Corzine just didn't give voters a reason to vote for him. Ultimately, it was a losing combination, regardless of which factor you think played the largest role in that result.

I have to agree. Speaking only for myself, I had a hard time (0.00 / 0)
having enthusiasm for Corzine, although I of course wanted him to win.

Having just returned from a visit to California, a Reagan nightmare of destruction of rationality, I tremble to think what lies ahead for New Jersey,

One of the first things destroyed by Reaganism was California's public education system, which went from being one of the best in the US to being Mississippi quality.

Of course Christie the first, the Whitless one, did all she could to destroy New Jersey's future (before she joined the Bush administration to help destroy New Jersey's - and the planet's atmosphere) and we can tremble at the thought of one more Republican governor in this state.

Christie II will be an even worse disaster, and if I will remember anything about Corzine, it will be his work in making this possible in a blue state.

Corzine was decidedly without a vision beyond Corzine himself.

The news in California today is huge increases in UC tuitions, exactly what a state does not need, more stratification based on wealth and heriditary access.

Thank you Reagan and Howard Jarvis for helping us lapse into third world status.

At least Florio, a one term governor, lost his office with honor.   He tried to do the right and sensible thing, which was to raise taxes.

If Corzine had done that, he could have lost with honor, but he didn't and didn't.

New Jersey did itself no favor by embracing "something for nothing" under whitless Christie I.

My oldest boy is in 9th grade and what I see coming is frightening.

One hopes that the legislature will do a better job at restraining this idiot Governor-elect than the Democratic legislature in Calfornia did with the first brain dead governor of California, the one who later became President.
