If you don't use the power you have, what's the point of having it?

by: Jeff Gardner

Uh oh, Jeff on marriage again. Didn't we just talk about this yesterday?

Well, sorry gang - I've gotten impatient. And, with good reason. I've been waiting a long time for New Jersey to find the right time to pass marriage equality. And, being a team player, I've been very very patient.

After all, we couldn't do it in 2004 after McGreevey resigned, because he was a Gay American, and it was too awkward.

And, we couldn't do it in 2005 when Corzine was running, because we had to hold the office.

Obviously, we couldn't do it in 2006 because of all those competitive Congressional races.

Then, we couldn't do it in 2007 because we had to protect our democratic majority in the legislature so we could pass things like Marriage Equality!

We remember clearly that we couldn't do it in 2008 because we wouldn't want to nationalize a New Jersey issue and hurt Obama.

And, finally, we had to wait for lame duck in 2009 because we didn't want to (ahem) distract from Corzine's race against Christie.

If there's one sure thing in politics, it's that there's always a reason not to do the right thing. We've heard them all, and keep hearing them and hearing them and hearing them.

So, we've been patient for long enough. Now, it's time for action. After all, what's the point in having power if you won't exercise it for fear of losing power?  If you don't use it, you don't have it. And, we only have it for two more months.

Well now, isn't it the economy? (4.00 / 1)
That's the word we are hearing in NYS, anyway.  Our Senate says this is no time to debate civil rights when people are hurting economically. Well, I and my community have been hurting for decades as our straight allies have talked the talk, but have refused to walk the walk.
NJ - opportunity is at hand, make your legislators seize it. If not, let them know that there are other "allies" ready and available to take their place. The Democratic Party knows that LGBTs have no where else to turn; maybe it's time for LGBTs to change the Democratic Party?

C'mon New York (4.00 / 1)
An empire state win would be a huge boost for us here - we're rooting for you! Bad economic times are exactly when civil rights should be advanced - it's when we suffer the most. (Not to mention, giving same-sex couples the freedom to marry would be an economic boon to both states.)

wasted time = lost $$$ (0.00 / 0)
If NJ had passed marriage equality legislation in 2007 instead of civil unions, it would have been the only state in the country where same-sex couples could have gone to get married.

Atlantic City would have become a same-sex Las vegas with LGBT-themed wedding chapels all over Atlantic and Pacific Avenues.  Some of the most beautiful parts of the state like the Jersey Shore, Delaware River, and Highlands would have seen boomlets in wedding-related economic activity and it is possible that the economic downturn that has hit our state so hard would might have been mitigated by the growth industries related to the massive numbers of same-sex weddings that would have taken place.

While NJ will still benefit economically when marriage equality legislation is passed during the upcoming lame duck session, it is impossible to estimate how much opportunity was missed as a result of the two-year delay.

It is interesting to note that most of the areas of the state that would have benefitted most from this boom in economic activity are Republican-dominated.  Once again, "values voters" suffer when they vote with their bibles instead of their pocketbooks.

Not to sound like an idiot (0.00 / 0)
But this sounds like fixing every other issue.  Our legislature is good at making excuses why they can't do anything.

To quote Langston Hughes (0.00 / 0)
"I do not need my freedom when I'm dead. I cannot live on tomorrow's bread."
