A shocking loophole in United States Senate rules

by: Hopeful

Thu Nov 05, 2009 at 10:43:32 PM EST

I bet you will find this Politico story about one of Frank Lautenberg's committees simply astonishing:

With Republican boycotting the proceedings, Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) relied on a little used interpretation of committee rules to move the legislation...

But legislation can be approved by the committee with a simple majority of members, an exception Boxer could use to pass her bill.

"Little used interpretation" indeed.

It's about time (4.00 / 1)
someone cleared the way.
The entire Publican agenda is to make the Democrats look like failures by any means necessary, even if it hurts the American people.
If Publicans weren't such reprehensible douche bags I might consider talking to them.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

I wonder ... (3.00 / 1)

The Rs say a vote without a legit meeting never has been called in the history of the committee.

But,

Has either party ever boycotted  every meeting that has a certain bill on the agenda?

Perhaps it's the Rs who broke history first and not the D who made a judgment call about what to do about it.

Personally, I think those 11 Rs should be fired for violating their oaths of office.  Their constituents hired them to work in Washington, not play hooky from their assigned meetings.

The boycott was clearly a miscarriage of the U.S. Constitution.

TPM has a CSPAN clip of it:

I wonder how the health insurance reform debate would have come out if the Rs hadn't had all the time in the world to gin up a barrel full of lies about death panels and abortion taxes.

The R's unclean hands on the health care stall is the real precedent.  I don't blame the Ds for not believing Voinovich this time.  If he's sincere, he needs to work on his own party to get its credibility back.
