Lesniak on Corzine: He was totally isolated by political reality

by: Jason Springer

Thu Nov 05, 2009 at 11:30:00 AM EST

Now that the election is over, many people are willing to speak where they weren't before the votes were cast. Following a poor performance for the Governor in Union County, Senator Ray Lesniak laid the blame squarely at the feet of Corzine:
"You just don't get the vote out at election time and be successful. It has to be a year-round communication, a year- round interaction," Lesniak said. "The governor turned his back on the political establishment that supported him throughout his political career. He was totally isolated by political reality and surrounded himself by people who were totally isolated by political reality."

Lesniak said there was a "bad tone" in the Corzine administration that carried through from the first days of the transition to the end.

Ouch. So the problem is that Corzine didn't suck up to the establishment enough? I think he means Corzine was isolated from political reality. Many would level that same critique against Lesniak and his colleagues. Corzine certainly had his flaws which contributed to difficulties in the campaign, but it takes two to tango and the establishment itself shouldn't escape some responsibility for the problems. While people look to continue placing blame for this loss, it's important they don't forget to take a peak in the mirror as well.

Dem LEADERSHIP? (0.00 / 0)
Democratic establishment leaders in New Jersey had 2 choices: they could have primaried Corzine (apparently that would have been too much work) or they could have worked to ensure his reelection. Our party and it's leadership should be ashamed of their performance on Tuesday. Failure to protect the interests of the men and women of New Jersey because Corzine personally wasn't to their liking is disgraceful. The result of this so called LEADERSHIP will fall on those least able to afford it. Chris Christie isn't up to the task. Aside from being very socially conservative and not in tune with the values of the majority of New Jerseyans, he and his family appear to be fairly sleazy and he seems or at least presents himself as fairly DIM.

Corzine certainly deserves some blame for not maintaining his relationships with party leaders and local Democratic machines. But the legislature's performance over the past four years has been terrible. While I didn't agree with all of his proposals, at least Corzine made a serious attempt to fix the state's budget problems. All the legislature offered were short-term band-aids.

You mean Stab-in-the-Back Lesniak? (4.00 / 1)
Just ask Dick Codey.

I'll ask a possibly dumb question (0.00 / 0)
I might have said "isolated from political reality." Does the expression "isolated by political reality" mean the same thing?

Here Comes the Establishment Spin.. (4.00 / 2)
Is Lesniak kidding?

I am not saying Corzine did 100% of a great job, but how about if 43 (not counting R assemplyperson) sworn officials would have HAD A CLUE when someone asked for favors in exchange for cash?

And the Ferriero-Oury story really helped as well in the most populus suburban county.

Given the attidute of many Democrats, we are lucky he closed to under 5 points.

Not to mention (4.00 / 1)
several of Lesniak's Democratic senate colleagues.

Now, Just like Lesniak, I feel freer to say (0.00 / 0)
As somebody who put his hand on a bible (albiet for a small office) and swore to the Constitution.  We as Democrats have every right of at least moral outrage if not party explusion for those who betrayed thier own oath, and sacrificed their own judgement to somebody else who told them that 'this person' they were going to have a meeting with was OK, do what they say, and who turned out to be an informant.   If you are a D voter, you should be TWICE as outraged as the average population.

Lesniak is Right (0.00 / 0)
Jon Corzine is a great guy who happens to be a lousy politician.

That is unfortunate for  those who believe in the things that Jon Corzine believes in.

Politics is,and will always be, the Art of the Deal. It is also played best by those who can communicate with people.

Corzine never liked "the deal" and he put too many people in positions of power who could not or would not play the game.

As I have stated many times on this site.  Idealism is noble, but reality politics is what gets things done.

Lesniak is right. Corzines tenure will go down as a failure because he never "got it".

Time to move on...........

Oh My God! (4.00 / 1)

After NJ Democrats go down because of the corruption, you're seriously going to defend "the deal"s and the machines that are the cause of it?   With Democrats like this, Christie is going to be Governor for a long time.

Nice to see how hard your machine of Norcross and Sweeney worked for Corzine.

What did all of your idealism get you. A loss!

Corzine is a great guy but he never got "it". Politics is all about making compromises. Idealists are always on the outside looking in.

President Obama understands this. Look at the issues he has had to step away from in order to promote the greater good.

If you want to see the "greater good" prevail you must start thinking more realistically.

Where were all of those Obama people this time around? So much for idealism.

You're in another world (0.00 / 0)

1.  I am not an idealist.  You would like to paint anyone who points out the corruption of political machines as an unrealistic idealist.

2.  Trying to attach yourself to Obama is laughable.  You are about as far away from Obama as Bush is.

3.  Personally, I think you and your political benefactors Sweeney and Norcross didn't try very hard to win this election.   So it's pretty hypocritical for you to start putting the blame on others when you were publicly sabotaging the campaign months ago.

4.  The pragmatist I am says the state can't afford so many CWA workers and the layoffs you railed against 2 years ago should start soon.

[ Parent ]
Well, maybe not (0.00 / 0)

I'm not sure I really believe in point 4.  But since defending the status quo in the number of workers would seem to be even more idealistic than asking for an honest Democratic party,  I guess you're pushing me in that direction with all your accusations.
