Monmouth Poll: "Christie, Corzine neck and neck as Daggett fades"

by: Hopeful

Sun Nov 01, 2009 at 01:03:04 AM EDT

The new Monmouth/Gannett poll of 1,041 New Jersey likely voters from October 28 to 30, 2009 is out:

Just days before selecting their next governor, New Jersey voters are clearly divided. The only sure bet from the latest Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll is that the winner will be either a Republican or a Democrat. As of Friday night, challenger Chris Christie held an insignificant one point lead over incumbent Jon Corzine among likely voters, 43% to 42%. Two weeks ago, the race was tied at 39% each. Independent Chris Daggett has faded to 8%, after reaching 14% in the previous poll.

Republican voters give 86% support to their party's nominee, compared to 6% for Corzine and 5% for Daggett. Democratic voters give 77% support to their party's nominee, compared to 11% for Christie and 9% for Daggett.

The Open Space bond leads 51-28.

Other details including approval rating, breakdowns by party, and analysis are in the full report (PDF).

Aaaaaargh (4.00 / 1)
can't wait for this to be over.

Democrat support (0.00 / 0)
Are those Democrats actually following the race? If they shift, Corzine will be okay. Are they so angry, they are not looking at the issues at stake?  Do they know that Christie has said the only tax pledge he can keep involves cutting income taxes for people earning more than $400,000?  Or do they believe the lies about the tolls or that the unions are causing all the problems?

It seems that some of these people are not concerned about Christie's ethical challenges, but think Corzine is being too negative.

I am less concerned about Independents because I think many of them lean Republican, but don't want to call themselves that.  It relates to national trends, with pollsters finding fewer people identifying as Republicans and more as Independents.

Intrade Predictions (4.00 / 2)
Intrade now quotes Corzine at 70 for winning governor. Do traders know something that is not showing in these public polls?

that is strange (0.00 / 0)
was't it 60% just a few days ago?

I have to think of a witty signature about Frank LoBiondo

It's now at 65 (4.00 / 1)
The range has been 60 to 70.  But even 60 sounds high, given the polls.

Could be the Obama factor (0.00 / 0)
Having the President rally tens of thousands could be a major factor in this election.  Always good to have to guy at the top on your side come election time.
