GOP Demands, then Whines About Budget Cuts

by: Juan Melli

Sun Apr 23, 2006 at 12:07:03 PM EDT

The neverending chorus of GOP demands for more and more budget cuts came to a very brief halt yesterday. As part of the many proposed cuts to the state budget, Corzine wants to save $734,000 by shifting the burden of deer carcass removal on local and county roads to local municipalities.

As Fred Snowflack notes, the complaints came from Republicans representing areas that would be affected by the proposal:

Predictably, there were howls of protests from the mostly Republican lawmakers who represent areas, northwest New Jersey comes to mind, where dead deer are likely to be found on local roads.

Queue the whining:

"This is just a redistribution of costs," said Assemblyman Guy Gregg, R-Morris.
He correctly defined the effects of budget cuts. Someone give this man an economics degree. Interestingly, he only seems to object when the costs are redistributed towards his constituents.
Juan Melli :: GOP Demands, then Whines About Budget Cuts
The GOP NIMBY patrol is out in full force:
"We need to find areas to cut. This isn't one of them," said Assemblywoman Jennifer Beck, R-Monmouth.

"It's a slap in the face to the rural and suburban areas, again," said Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose, R-Sussex.

"There are a lot of other areas to save money," said Assemblyman Michael Doherty, R-Warren.
Snowflack points out the obvious hypocrisy:
These Republicans normally are yelling and screaming about the need to cut government. But lo and behold, when a cut impacts them, they yell and scream about that as well.

You can't have it both ways.

The GOP has whined about a proposed penny tax increase, demanding that we must_cut_services instead before even THINKING about a boosting revenue. But they've saved up their whining strength for preventing any budget cuts that might ask them to share in the burden of balancing the budget. It should make everyone wonder if they even really care about balancing the budget at all.

I left a comment for Jim Larkin (0.00 / 0)
Jim Larkin left a comment in the blogs parrotting the wingers mentioned by Fred, I asked him to define it in the same way he defines No Child Left Behind.

Great post, Juan.

Re: (0.00 / 0)
The concept of having the state pick up projects at lower levels is that it can save money by doing it en masse.  I'm not an expert on deer migration, but it seems to me that keeping dead animals off of the road is hardly a project that can be done "en masse".

In other words, I think there is a good chance that local crews may be able to do this cheaper, more efficiently, and just as well.

Freeloading whining hosebags (0.00 / 0)
If they could figure out a way to borrow and embezzle they wouldn't be whining. Did anyone expect anything different from free ride republicans? As long as someone else is picking up the tab they're OK with it. Their ultimate goal is to drop dead owing the world millions. What was that about personal responsibility?

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

I dunno who normally does this (0.00 / 0)
but if it is some contractor the state hires then of course picking up dead deer is cheaper at the local level. Have the guys responsible for municipal works do the job. These guys go around doing the street cleaning.

Dead deer on road = dirty street.

Thus it only makes sense to have the muni-street cleaners do this job.

I bet with a little digging you could find some contractor that is dedicated to picking up the dead deer throughout the state.

NJ - The outsource state.
