Where Every Day Is Earth Day

by: Steven Hart

Sat Apr 22, 2006 at 03:17:26 PM EDT

For your environmental edification on a very wet Earth Day, here's the story of how a New Jersey couple managed to live comfortably since 1980 without any oil heating bills, thanks to a little know-how and a floor-to-ceiling approach to energy conservation. The house looks pretty cute, too.

Earth Day SHOULD be every day (4.00 / 1)
Thanks for that. I just got back in from a river cleanup in Leonia organized by Hackensack Riverkeeper (and took a shower). It was a great experience, and a pretty good turnout for such a miserable day. I know there were also many river cleanups organized by NJ Public Interest Research Group. For those of you who missed a chance to participate in an Earth Day event, remember that there are plenty of river cleanups going on, from April until October. I highly recommend it.

Also, Whole Foods Market has purchased enough wind power to account for 100% of their power consumption -- not only their stores, but their entire operation including offices, production, etc. It's the largest corporation to do so. They have a program you can sign up for & receive a $20 (individual) or $50 (family) Whole Foods gift certificate. Of course, in New Jersey, there's also the New Jersey CleanPower Choice Program.

It's certainly about time for everyone who cares about the future of this planet to join in actually caring for the planet. We had a scientist from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies speak at the Bergen Grassroots meeting at the beginning of this month. The most severe effects of global warming are coming a lot sooner than most people would think. (The scientist, Dr. Barbara Carlson, was not "sounding the alarm", but rather gave a very balanced presentation -- the same one given by the director of GISS, Dr. James Hansen, at Bergen Community College.)
