Rumors and the Company they Keep

by: Juan Melli

Mon Oct 24, 2005 at 08:16:22 PM EDT

Earlier, I wrote about the Swiftboat machine that Forrester's camp is gearing up to smear Jon Corzine.

Please welcome the newest member of the smear machine: Enlighten-NJ. They're setting the stage for media outlets to pick up on unsubstantiated rumors:

...it’ll make Jim McGreevey look like a Cub Scout compared to Jon Corzine.
The fact that the Forrester camp is using Enlighten to put out this information means they can't get anyone respectable to bite.

The lies that Enlighten refers to originated on online message boards from anonymous posts and have already been repeated on NJ 101.5 radio. These smears are salacious. (Note: I've removed one of the rumors I mentioned here before. They are gross, unsubstantiated smears and don't even deserve repeating. Also, it appears that the link to the nj.com board is no longer working - the smear appears to have been removed from their site as well.)

Then there are idiots like Michelle Malkin who claim that Jon Corzine has been buying the votes of blacks. Last time I checked, it was the other party that was struggling with support from African Americans.

These people know they're about to lose, and rather than do it with dignity, they are choosing to smear Jon Corzine's name with rumors and lies. They aren't worthy of licking the bottom of his boots.

They are lies, which is why they haven't been repeated by any reputable news organizations. To the mainstream media - thanks for keeping these nonsensical rumors out of your pages.

Update: In the comments, Frogsdong reminds us that Enlighten is no stranger to smear tactics. In fact, it's all he knows.

Enlighten NJ is Not New to Smears (0.00 / 0)
Months ago I used to stop by Enlighten NJ all the time to blast them for writing nothing about Forrester but simply smear after smear about Corzine.  I once counted up the stories on their top page and found 21 stories, with 14 of them smears of Jon Corzine.  Joined the campaign?  Naw, they lead it.  Anyone familiar with them knows this and should be able to see that anything they say now is just more discredited nonsense.

My mistake (0.00 / 0)
I went back and looked up my old posting.  It was eight of the 21 articles that were smears or attacks on Corzine.  Not one article mentioned Doug Forrester.  Here's what I wrote last July 12:

Sometimes I wander around blogtopia and accidentally come across a blog like Enlighten NJ. I won't link Enlighten NJ because it is a nasty little place full of nasty little articles and it lacks substance. I had an argument with the guy who runs that site in his comments not long ago because I accused them of being full of nothing but "hit" pieces. Well, that's true, and they have gotten worse. At that time I did a count and found 21 articles on their front page, eight of which were attacks on Jon Corzine, one of which was a blatant distortion and smear. There was not one single article saying one single thing of substance about Senator Corzine's opponent in the race, Doug Forrester (a wholly-owned subsidiary of the pharmaceutical industry). Today I visited them again and it was more of the same, but slightly more hysterical in tone.

If you go to the Doug Forrester campaign web site, you get more of the same. About half of the articles there are attacks on Jon Corzine that say nothing about Doug Forrester. By contrast, Jon Corzine's campaign site is almost entirely about his plans and ideas.

Well, I am not writing a hit piece here. I just want any New Jersey voters who happen by to consider those sites when I point you to this exceptionally informative article by Matt Stoller in which he provides a lot of substantive information about Jon Corzine's plans for NJ health care, as well as links to where you can find even more information. This is what campaigning in NJ ought to be about: facts and information...
