Here we go (0.00 / 0)
and Rosi is in the crowd.  Se says that Chris Christie, Chris Daggett and Jon Corzine are all there. Congressman Pallone is there as well.  45 second intro, then questions.  45 second answer, 30 second rebuttal.  Weinberg up first.

Weinber goes first (4.00 / 1)
says who she is, talks about old boys network trying to keep her out.  Talks about fighting for families, children. She's honored Corzine chose her.  Thanks everyone for being there.  Looks forward to spirited debate with specific answers to complex questions facing us.

Esposito next. Talks about how difficult things are. Says we have serious problems. R's and D's have created this mess.  This election is about the future and what we want.

Guadagno welcomes everyone to Monmouth County. Thanks sponsors. Says history will be made as 1st debate, but not only history.  Facing worst economic down turn.  Families being torn apart.  Families in pain. Are we going to suffer through another 4 years like the same that got us here.  You have clear chance to change outcome.  Can stand up and make a difference.  Moving in a different direction.  Christie knows we cant continue.  Need to cut spending, cut debt and find people jobs.

Really weird camera angles.

Question from audience (4.00 / 1)
what policy area would you oversee.

Esposito wants to link higher ed and k-12 to economic recovery.  need to support higher ed and reform k-12. Need to promote corporate development and link between higher ed and research base.

Guadagno talks abotu wanting to make jobs.  Setup partnership for action.  Lower taxes, cut spending and get nj back on track.  Oh nice, they gave their talking points a name.

Weinberg wants to be a full partner w/Corzine.  Helping w jobs, education, expanding healthcare.  Brings a lifetime to experience to her job as a state senator and hopefully as LG.

Video question on health insurance (4.00 / 1)
wife has plan where she works.  he can't get coverage.  Wants to get coverage on his own to increase choices.

Guadagno says Chris has been very specific.  Healthcare to expensive.  Have to increase competiation so more people can be insured on private level.

Weinberg says Christie has been specific.  Wants to do away w mandates, mammograms and 48 hour stay.  She doesn't believe we should give up mandates.  Says we have choice in New Jersey.  Talks about expansion of Childrens healthcare plan that covers 600K kids.

Esposito talks about 1.3 million uninsured in NJ.  Dismal figure and major challenge to deal w that.  Find ways to work w insurance companies.  Also have to keep an eye on what is happening at national level.

Follow up to Weinberg on what you wouldn't do and what has done.  Points out that NJ has reduced uninsured.  Will expand family care.  Expand choices in care and group care and will keep getting more NJ residents insured.  NJ has reduced uninsured by 11% and Gov can be proud.

Guadagno says facts are 100K more people uninsured than 7 years ago.  Public insurance shouldn't be be all end alll.  I missed the end of her answer, but the crowd ended clapping.

Reminder that you can call in questions at 1-800-283-1015

Question on Property taxes (4.00 / 1)
what can you do to make sure guy doesn't lose home.

Weinberg first.  Crowd boos when she says George Bush economic policy. Scott presses Weinberg. Corzine cut budget by 4 billion, reduced public employees.  we have a balanced budget.  Kept property tax rebates for seniors.  Have done what could do in tough economy.  Scott continues to press on what do intend to do.  Weinberg says she's answered and what had to do.  We cut state government.  Says we need to talk about shared services, breakdown of all the pieces of the state.  We have started to address.  We will continue to address.  Points out that they kept property rebates.

Esposito says if thats the best, corzine must have been in NY state of mind.  Audience laughs. Talks about daggett plan.

Guadagno takes issue with cutting spending.  She knows Weinberg has been in trenton a long time.  A budget deficit is not cutting taxes.  says 1st thing they will do is start at bottom of budget and work way up.  Sending 2 former federal corruption prosecutors to trenton.  turn lights on and turn over every rock.  screws up and says cut jobs... er cut taxes.  2 ways to cut taxes, from top.  Scott asks for 1 specific area where they would cut.  Guadagno looks for unfunded state mandates.  Mentions COAH as unfunded mandate.

Weinberg says Corzine was 1st Governor in 60 years to cut budget 2 years in a row.  8200 less state employees since Corzine took office. Says downturn in economy has hurt NJ.  Will continue looking for ways to cut budget and find shared services.

Esposito gets final word.  Says we could cut every state worker in NJ and not meet budgetary shortfall.  Key is to cut spending to get handle on what we're facing, which is 8 billion immediate shortfall, 100 billion in long term obligations.  cutting at edges is not going to do it.  have to cut property tax burden.  thats what's driving people out of nj.

Question on disagreements (4.00 / 1)
mentions Guadagno/Christie abortion.  On big issues, taxes, taxes, taxes they agree.

Weinberg says she shares Gov's values on expanding pre-school and know it's not babysitting.  We've had disagreements along the way. We agree on major values on what kind of state we want to live in, air we breath, kind of healthcare.

Scott follows up on contributions to power brokers. In spite of disagreements, Weinberg was still chosen.

Guadagno says Corzine said he woudl be unbossed and unbought.  But then bought off power brokers.  Calls ferriero ferrino i think. Guadagno says she's an outsider whose been outside working in real world trying to raise her family while Weinberg was in trenton.  Can't change trenton from inside.

Esposito says election rules need to be revised.  Money makes a big difference.  Talks about wheeling.

What does amount spent on campaign (0.00 / 0)
say to less afluent residents of state if they see nj politics becoming playground for wealthy.

Esposito says it means unless we change and close loopholes.  Tells story of former congressman who couldn't run today.  Says residents have to make it clear that process is flawed.

Weinberg talks about insider/outsider toward Guadagno.  Scott interrupts.

Ok, I need to go make some dinner.  I'll try to make it back.

I had to go too (0.00 / 0)
It was pretty hard to take, KG is awful, reporter keeps interrupting Democrat.  Though it always hard to watch VP debates.

Corzine campaign corrects KG lie (0.00 / 0)
this went out during the debate to the media:
The Corzine/Weinberg '09 campaign would like to clarify the following statement made by Kim Guadagno:

"Are we going to suffer through another four years of the same taxing, spending, and debt that's got us here in the first place, or are we going to find a change?"

"We need to cut spending, we need to cut debt"

Jon Corzine was the first governor to cut the budget two years running.  According to New Jersey Department of Treasury records, Jon Corzine is the first governor to cut the budget two years in a row.  New Jersey Department of Treasury,

Jon Corzine cut the budget in absolute dollars two years in a row. The Philadelphia Inquirer opined, "Corzine will have cut the budget in absolute dollars two years in a row. That's unprecedented in any state, and especially in New Jersey." [Philadelphia Inquirer 6/7/09]

Corzine campaign corrects another lie (0.00 / 0)

TRENTON--The Corzine/Weinberg '09 campaign would like to clarify the following statement made by Kim Guadagno:

"The governor, when he instituted the blue ribbon panel that looked at immigration problems did make two recommendations, one is that we issue drivers licenses."

Jon Corzine Is Against Driver's Licenses for Illegal Immigrants.  As the Associated Press reported in an article headlined "New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine Against Driver's Licenses for Illegal Immigrants." Governor Jon Corzine "didn't endorse [a] panel's recommendation that illegal immigrants be extended state driving privileges, saying that's an issue for the federal government to decide." [Associated Press, 3/30/09]

I really can't take much more of this. It's very difficult to watch the junior partners attack people not present.

another statement (0.00 / 0)
If you wonder what the campaign does during the debate, it send out statements like this. The fact-checking is important to try to influence coverage.

"Chris Christie has said on more than one occasion that he would have taken all the stimulus funds that did not have strings attached"

Christie said he would follow the lead of right-wing governors and reject $5 billion in federal stimulus funds.  Chris Christie would reject $5 billion in stimulus money from President Obama's economic recovery package, resulting in $2 billion in property tax increases across New Jersey. Christie said "it makes sense" for right-wing governors like Sarah Palin, Mark Sanford, Bobby Jindal and Rick Perry to reject federal stimulus money and said he'd follow their example. When asked on Fox News how he felt about the governors' actions, Christie replied, "I think it makes sense. If they're going to put strings on that money that are going to tie your hands and make you expand programs and not be able to have the freedom of choice that people elected you for, then you shouldn't take the money." The nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services found that nearly $5 billion in federal stimulus money for New Jersey has conditions attached by the federal government  -- money Christie said he would reject. [Fox News, Hannity, 5/18/09, Star Ledger, 7/8/09, Office of Legislative Services]

Christie likened President Obama's economic recovery package to a shell game. "Let's remember something about this stimulus package. They are taking money out of our right pocket to put it into our left pocket." [Christie campaign event, West Windsor, 2/28/09]

Candidates ask each other questions (4.00 / 1)
I'm back and they can ask 2 questions.

First from Gaudagno to Weinberg, says there's a surprise.  When Gov's treasurer testified about 2010 budget he said people were not overtaxed.  Do you agree?

Weinberg talks about what they've done, cutting spending.  Talks about property tax rebates being included in budget for seniors, disabled.  Scott asks if there is a difference between being overtaxed and taxes being to high. Weinberg says taxes are too high and do everthing possible to bring them down.  Talks about how property taxes get as high as they are. Says a cut in the income tax would cut direct property tax relief. Weinberg says she's still waiting to hear a specific plan from Christie/Guadagno.  Mentions WSJ and Mulshine calling Christie plan a fantasy. Weinberg says property taxes are to high.

Esposito says daggett is the only one with a plan in the race. Talks about everyone who gave their input. Says people are leaving cause they can't pay property taxes.

Weinberg question to Guadagno on health insurance. Says campaign has taken 100K from insurance companies.  Mentions mandate free coverage that don't require paying for mammograms.  Weinberg wants to know how their plans will help healthcare.

Guadagno says that they are lieing. He says he's trying to get people without insurance some kind of policy. Says we have most expensive insurance in country. Guadagno says they are encouraging people to get insurance who couldn't on the private level.

Esposito says everyone agrees women should get health benefits for mammograms.  He doesn't see how it's become such an issue.  The real issue is how to get people coverage.  Hospitals are going out of business.

Scott goes back to original question. Weinberg clarifies that they're saying whether insurance company will pay for mammogram or pay for aftercare coverage. Says if you allow mandate free health insurance to be sold, every insurance company will take those mandates out and women who can't afford won't get them.

Guadagno says she's gonna say it the 5th time.  Those policies only goes to those who don't have insurance.  Says Corzine is trying to scare women from voting for Christie.  On the contribution from healthcare companies, Guadagno doesn't accept the premise. She says Christie would encourage more companies to come back into NJ.

Esposito says spending to much time (4.00 / 1)
on issues that aren't imporant.  Weinberg says depends on if you need a mammogram.

Esposito question for Weinberg on bill she co-sponsored in increased pension benefits. Points to Corzine putting back into pension fund more money than had been done than in the 14 years prior to his Governorship. Weinberg talks about Christie Whitman refinancing pension system giving state largest pension debt that we are paying off today.

Guadagno says pension is broke because of both parties which is why they need to bring someone in from the outside.  Says Chris Chrsitie will work to roll back 9% special interest gift at the expense of the taxpayers.

Question on school funding (0.00 / 0)
says discriminates against non-urban districts. Asks what they will do.

Espsosito says latest interpretation by court is accurate.  That funds should follow the student.  Says we also think there is a bigger issue with large cities that have received billions and what is accountability.  Points to Newark's 40% of students not passing High School proficiency assessment.

Guadagno agress with Esposito that urban schools are failing children.  Says we have no accountability because gov hasn't endorsed vouchers and charter schools.

Weinberg says look at facts.  It's Jon Corzine who went to Court and got school funding formula and got courts to support idea that money should follow child that needs that, not zipcode.  Jon Corzine did that.  Corzine and Weinberg have been big supporters of Charter schools.  No we don't believe we should take money out of public schools through vouchers. Says on urban school, with expansion of daycare and pre-school and early childhood education, which we know is not babysitting, the achievement gap has narrowed.  We are starting to see early childhood education pay off or our students.  She says we changed the school funding formula.

Esposito says there are not enough options for the students right now.  Need more learning options including charters.  Points to Robert Treat. Says we need to say we will not tolerate failing schools. Says will close down and restructure schools.

Guadagno points to Robert Treat for making public schools better.  She says cost is 9,000 v 18,000 and you can take the balance of that and take the pressure off schools. Says she can't understand why Governor would not endorse more charter schools and vouchers.  Guadagno says not all politics is bad.  After Christie campaign sheds light.

Weinberg says aren't entitled to take the facts of one situation and apply it to another.  We have more kids in charter school than before Governor. By just making a statement that you don't understand why don't support, you're wrong.  We have lessened length of time for Charter school approval.  Down to 6 months because they streamlined.  Look at the facts and not make up your own set of facts.

now I see why Corzine wouldn't debate on NJ101.5 (0.00 / 0)
I only watched parts, but I felt like the NJ101.5 guy took sides, though obviously a partisan tends to feel that way.

Is that debate still happening? (0.00 / 0)
After all, both Daggett and Christie had agreed to it when Corzine rejected it.

[ Parent ]
beats me, but I doubt it (0.00 / 0)
If I were Christie, I wouldn't want to go on with just Daggett, it would turn into a competition for the anti-Corzine vote. Obviously Christie wants to be the only possible anti-Corzine vote.

For the record I still think the governor should do any and all debates, but I'm more sympathetic now.

If Daggett wasn't in the picture, maybe Corzine would've said yes. (0.00 / 0)
I think that the pattern in all the debates will be a poor performance by Chris Christie.  If it was just Corzine and Christie, maybe Corzine would've agreed. But more debates with three candidates would only boost Daggett's profile and poll numbers, not Corzine's.

Corzine is pleased (0.00 / 0)
"Tonight, Senator Weinberg demonstrated why she has been such a successful public servant for the people of New Jersey. Her command of the important issues is second to none. Even more importantly, she fights each and every day for the issues that matter most to New Jerseyans. I am proud that our first Lieutenant Governor will be fighting for the working families of New Jersey for the next four years."

NJ101.5 was bias. They are all Jerks (0.00 / 0)
Sherif  Guadagno and former US Attorney are both are not right for New Jersey. Watching Sherif reminded me of Sarah Palin.
The Sherif was very arrogant, no wonder Christie the Bully picked her for LT. She forgets she is a federal employee, and we tax payers pays her.

We do not need two bulies to take over Trenton. NJ101.5 is all day bashing Gov Corzine.
The moderator was such a jerk, continued to interupt LT Weinberg. I was listening to NJ101.5 before the debate. The Jersey guys are all Christie's cronies. They were all talking illof Jon Corzine, and Claimed Chris Darget is a plant by the Corzine Campaign. That was NJ101.5.
No Way, No How, No Chistie/Guadagno for NJ.
