When it comes to local taxes collected, the national average that businesses paid was 50.7 percent of the total. New Jersey businesses paid a significantly lower amount at 36 percent. Businesses in New Jersey's neighboring states also paid higher amounts than us with New York at 48.6 percent of local taxes collected and Pennsylvania businesses at 40.4 percent.

When you combine state and local taxes, New Jersey businesses paid 37.2 percent of the total amount collected. That's well below the national average of 44.1 percent, Pennsylvania's 41.1 percent and New York's 40.9 percent.
