Quote of the Day: Objects in Mirror May Be Closer than they Appear Edition

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed Sep 30, 2009 at 10:02:29 AM EDT

From the text of the Quinnipiac University poll, released this morning, showing Corzine gaining rapidly on Christie, now 43-39. Q-poll says:

"Christopher Christie is still ahead in the Garden State, but when he looks in the rear- view mirror, he sees the bearded visage of Gov. Jon Corzine getting closer," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Although ... we'd add, it's obvious that Christie doesn't look in the rearview mirror.

Or the sideview mirror, the windshield, speed limit signs or one way signs.

the bearded one is coming (0.00 / 0)
Maybe it will be Christmas in November after all.

where is daggett's support coming from? (4.00 / 1)
I'm astounded he's polling so well.

we have people who won't vote for Corzine (0.00 / 0)
but won't vote Republican.  Well, Daggett is Republican, but you know what I mean.

I've done that myself (0.00 / 0)
but 12% are planning to not vote for Corzine, but can't bring themsselves to vote for Christie? astounding. I wonder if Daggett can maintain this through October - I would expect the 'protest' vote to re-solidify behind the governor. If Daggett does better than Sabrin that will be ... I'll say it again ... astounding.

Still conflicted. (4.00 / 2)
For more than two months now, I've been planning to vote for Daggett, because I can't vote for Christie and am still very upset with the high tolerance for corruption in the state Democratic Party.

But, Christie's actions of late have made me less likely to favor the spoiler and more likely to help Corzine pull it out. I don't consider myself a Corzine voter yet, but I sympathize with the Governor, and think he's a good guy trying to do some good things for the long term in NJ.

At the same time I cringe at the thought of the people who hang onto his coattails. And he diminishes my confidence when he doesn't kick them to the curb.

Corzine took stands against power brokers (4.00 / 1)
In Bergen County, Corzine sided with Loretta Weinberg against the county machine.  He also proposed tougher ethic reform that the legislation watered down.  There are many Democratic politicians in the state who are not happy with him because of his stands.

The corruption will be there regardless of who the governor is.  A few years ago, when Republicans were in power, they dominated the corruption arrests.

Thanks Amy. But I don't accept that we can't do something -- something substantive -- about removing corruption from power in New Jersey.

Codey and Cryan need to go. (And I'm not sure Sweeney's much better.) Let's expect more from our leaders.

Corzine did the right thing in '05 with Weinberg. But I've been disappointed with his inability to reform the Democratic Party while in office. Maybe his LG will take charge of that, but I have doubts.
