About the debates
Christie and Daggett are required to take part in the two ELEC-sanctioned debates because they are accepting public financing for their campaigns. Corzine is not financing his campaign with public money but has agreed to the three scheduled debates in October.
It took some work to nail a debate schedule. Gov. Corzine was criticized for trying to have the first debate moved later in the month, and then again for turning down a debate offered by 101.5 FM, which routinely pillories the governor in its talk format. The third debate, by contrast, is hosted by a public radio station affiliated with National Public Radio (NPR), and Christie signed on to that one only after the other two candidates agreed. Daggett asked for a debate hosted by League of Women Voters and the LWV did apply to sponsor a debate to be televised on ABC affiliates in NYC and Philadelphia, but it was not selected. |
