We All Need to Fight for Governor Corzine

by: Congressman Frank Pallone

Promoted by Jason

This coming November we all have an important choice at the polls.  This election doesn't just impact New Jersey's families; it affects Democratic and progressive causes all over the country.  We are fighting in Washington to make sure that lasting health care reform legislation is ultimately passed and the Republicans have been fighting us every step of the way.  If Chris Christie is elected Governor it will only embolden right-wing Republicans to continue to obstruct and derail our ambitious agenda.

Congressman Frank Pallone :: We All Need to Fight for Governor Corzine
My friend, Governor Jon Corzine has been a leader - not only on addressing New Jersey's economic recession, but also in working to lift the United States' economy out of recession in tough fiscal times.  And it's not just those of us here in New Jersey who recognize this fact.  Vice President Joe Biden made it clear, one of his first acts was to call Governor Corzine and ask his advice.  The stimulus plan passed in New Jersey was a model for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan because of Governor Corzine's leadership.  Chris Christie simply doesn't have the ideas or the policies to get New Jerseyans back to work.  On the other hand, Governor Corzine will continue to work with President Obama to bring about positive change.

We all need to get to work right now to make sure Jon Corzine and Loretta Weinberg get across the finish line on November 3rd.  I encourage everyone to find a Victory 09 Office near you to volunteer, canvass or phone bank.  This is the final sprint.  We only have a few short weeks to go.  Recently, I visited the New Brunswick Victory 09 Office to thank all of the hard working volunteers for their time. Everyone needs to pitch in whatever way we can on behalf of the Governor, because he has been working on behalf of all of us.

This election is too important to sit on the sidelines.  Do you really want to risk having Chris Christie leading our State for the next 4 years?  We saw how President Bush and his cronies handled the White House.  We can't go back to those dark days.  Let's not allow Chris Christie to pick up in Trenton where Dick Cheney and Karl Rove left off.  Jon Corzine is a leader with big ideas on how to keep New Jersey moving forward.  With Senator Weinberg by his side, Governor Corzine will continue to be a champion for progressive causes in our State.

In just a few hours, Vice President Al Gore is coming to rally the troops at the NJ Democratic State Conference down in Atlantic City. While he's speaking this evening, like many of you I'm sure I'll be thinking back to memories of the 2000 campaign.  It was only 9 years ago that Al Gore was running for President and Governor Corzine was in a tight battle in to bring his progressive values to the US Senate.  Unfortunately only one of those races turned out the way we wanted, and we simply can't allow the right-wing Republicans to steal another election.  They've done it before.  Not just in Florida - they've also done it here in New Jersey in recent years.

We only have a few short weeks until Election Day.  So, let's get to work on getting Governor Corzine re-elected in November. Please, find a Victory 09 Office near you today!

This is the time for everyone to put aside any differences and work to defeat Christie.

The prospect of Christie winning is almost too disgusting to contemplate for more than a minute.  The list of potential  horribles is virtually endless.

God forbid that anything happen to Frank Lautenberg and Christie gets to appoint a Bush/Rove Republican to the Senate!

Once Jon Corzine is re-elected we can press him and en-COURAGE him to become the aggressive progressive that is required to truly improve life for the vast majority of New Jerseyans......but if Christie gets in because too many disgusted and disenheartend progressives sat on their asses pining away for a "perfect" candidate then we will have ourselves to blame for the consequences.

Sounds corny (4.00 / 2)
I know this sounds corny, but I really think Gov. Corzine is a consummate professional.

One of the reasons it's easy for opponents to mock him is because he is an intellectual whose time and attention is devoted to working to solve the state's problems in an adult way, instead of playing the silly schoolyard perceptions game that Capo Christie has played consistently since he was a failed Morris County freeholder.

The GOP has no solutions.  Talk is cheap.  Corzine's small but progressive steps in the right direction really are the kind of incremental changes most voters prefer, but somehow the GOP manages to turn it into Opposite Day for the people who love to hate.

Dear Koolaid (4.00 / 2)
I appreciate that there are stark differences between Corzine and Christie, both in theory and in practice. Corzine was a reliable liberal vote in the Senate, whereas Christie has, apparently, no opinions about any real issues. When he has opinions, they are the humdrum conservative paeans to Reagan, lower taxes, yada yada.

But lets not chug the Koolaid too quickly; Jon Corzine hasn't done a hell of a lot of good as governor. The man who has so much money that he could have destroyed the decaying, corrupted power structure that runs this state like its private pig trough has taken, at every bend and turn, the path of least resistance. He could have re-oriented the process from the required kowtowing to regional bosses that dole out the pork and patronage to one where dedication to the progressive policies that will best serve of the people of our state is the path to victory. He hasn't. He's accepted the power structure and paid it off. He's been a massive disappointment.

I expected a lot from Jon Corzine. As the above poster wrote, he's taken baby steps in the right direction. Until the past few months, his administration has done zip on corruption in a state where you could probably smack 3 corrupt politicians just by swinging a golf club.

But Christie would be an absolute, unmitigated disaster. He's a talentless anti-intellectual, a hack, a bag man for the mindless Bushism of the last decade. I respect some of the results of the US Attorney's office while he was there, but he didn't prosecute a single damn case. It's more a testament to the effectiveness of his staff than anything. I suppose it does reflect well on his ability to pick qualified people, but that sole redeeming trait isn't enough to move him out of the "disaster of an executive" category, at least in my mind.

In November, I'll hold my nose and vote for the middling timidity of a progressive over the stinking hack of a conservative. But let's not write poems and sing songs of the Nobility of the Corzine; heavy Koolaid drinking for mediocrities only serves to diminish the great politicians when they finally do come along.

Well Said jason... (0.00 / 0)
...we have to re-elect Jon Corzine and MAKE him do what's right.  He, at least is capable of understanding what's right and of yielding when he is pressed by THE PEOPLE to DO what's right.  If what I've just said wasn't true,  Loretta Weinberg wouldn't have agreed to be his running mate.....and I anticipate that she will become an even greater ally of the progressive movement as LT than she was as a state Senator!.

Cristie, on the other hand is an irredeemably hopeless hack.

I'll have far more critical/demanding things to say about Jon Corzine after we re-elect him....but this is a time to practice political triage....and realize that he's the only game in town for progressives.
