Support Your School Budget, And Make Jim Gearhart Cry

by: Steven Hart

Tue Apr 18, 2006 at 08:40:10 AM EDT

During yesterday morning's drive to work, New Jersey 101.5 bloviator Jim Gearhart took time off from the station's program of virtually nonstop whining about the smoking ban to whine about something else: the school district elections and budget votes taking place today through New Jersey.

In the course of urging his listeners to shoot down their local school budgets (taxes, you know), Gearhart vended unattributed and unsourced rumors about teachers who strong-armed people to support school budgets by threatening to "mess with" their children. He ended by calling the New Jersey Education Association, the statewide teachers union, "the only federally approved terrorist organization."

Steven Hart :: Support Your School Budget, And Make Jim Gearhart Cry
Jim Gearhart, folks. Favorite drive-time squawker of Gannett Newspapers. He just lumped New Jersey teachers in with mass murderers who fly airplanes into office buildings and behead captives in front of video cameras. Jim Gearhart, folks.

Every now and then I'll hear from people who praise Gearhart as an independent-minded guy who's basically conservative but capable of thinking for himself. Sorry, folks, but it won't wash. Jim Gearhart is just another wingnut crybaby who doesn't want to pay his way like a grownup, and who will slander and defame honest Americans in the course of his on-the-air tantrums. If nothing else makes you want to vote today, showing up this clown ought to do it.

Gearhart: Second hand Hannity (0.00 / 0)
Gearhart needs to spend more time with reality and less time with Mary Fist and her sisters the Five Fingers.

Tell him how happy you are that he compares teachers to terrorists.

He did have one good point, (0.00 / 0)
Why on earth should school elections and budget votes be separated from the elections in Nov? It virtually guarantees lower turnout, and it's more costly. I can think of no good reason not to move the school votes in with the November elections. It seems a giant waste of time and money from where I sit.

I wonder as well (0.00 / 0)
I don't know what the logic is for separating them, except maybe that the terms are set by the school year.  Anyone know why the elections are separated like this?

Separate elections (0.00 / 0)
I heard Bob Hennally on WNYC say yesterday that having the school board elections held at a different time was to avoid having them appear partisan.

S1188 (0.00 / 0)
S1188, introduced by Sen. Leonard Lance & Sen. John Adler, is sitting in the Senate State Government Committee. This bill is proposed to combine school, fire and non-partisan municipal elections to one date instead of how we have them now.

Anyone even remember the fire elections in February? Anyone want to be there'll be lousy turnout tonight, even among folks who bitch about their school taxes or the lack of services provided in their system? There's no earthly reason to have these smaller elections on different days. This is a common-sense bill that should have been passed long ago. Read the bill and if you agree, write your legislator today, and write to committee chair Sen. Joe Coniglio to move it along.

Then go out and vote.
