On the Polls

Do you recognize these numbers?

32
33,33
34
35,35,35,35
36,36,36
37,37,37,37
38,38,38,38,38,38,38,38
39,39,39,39,39
40,40,40,40
41,41,41,41
42,42,42

These are the percentage of New Jersey voters -- in the 39 different polls taken this year by 11 different polling companies -- who say they will vote for Governor Jon Corzine when matched up against Chris Christie, or Chris Christie plus Chris Daggett.

There is not a single poll all year where Jon Corzine does more than 4 points better than the median (and average, and mode) of 38, and only three (less than 10%) where he does more than 4 points worse. In contrast, Christie's numbers have a huge variation. While it's pretty plain Christie went up in the polls and then slid back a bit, I honestly think Corzine's numbers have not budged all year -- we just see  random variations due to sampling and differences in polling techniques.

I think it follows that nothing in these nine-and-half months of campaigning has convinced anyone to get out and cast a positive vote for Jon Corzine. That's why I think more negative advertising is not enough, somehow a powerful positive message has to get through the clutter.  Easier said than done, and I appreciate the campaign's efforts so far, but I think the polls say the Democratic and unaffiliated voters that have cast votes for Corzine, Obama, and so many other Democrats in the past need to be inspired.

More positive for Corzine (4.00 / 1)
I think if you listened to the NJN interview with Senator Weinberg, she indicated that the concerns you mentioned will be addressed by the Corzine/Weinberg campaign as there is much positive to say about Team Corzine. On the other hand what can you say about Wrong Way Corrigan ... 'er Christie?

Watching Chm Joe Cryan on CH 12, I think he projected a new level of optimism. We,however, must get engaged, get a significant % of the New Dems and GOTV.

Yes we can!

I agree. (4.00 / 1)
Though I don't see a better strategy than the one the Corzine campaign is employing right now. It may be that their negatives on Christie aren't working -- that people don't care about the driving and tax evasion.

Maybe they need to rile up people on the classic Democratic points -- Christie is a deep red Republican who disagrees with the majority of New Jersey.

Change is a powerful idea, and Christie has harnessed it. 'We just got rid of Bush-thinking in Washington. Now it's headed to New Jersey.' That kind of thing.

People Would Care A GREAT Deal; IF....... (0.00 / 0)
...the truth were presented in a penetrating razor sharp way that actually had some impact.

Republicans are far more effective telling LIES using deceptive/dishonest swiftboating tactics than Democrats are when they are actually telling the 100% objective TRUTH about their opponents' negatives.

Being nice to bullies, being modest about our accomplishments/record....and being shy about showing our passion and love (yes, love) for the people/children/future is not a way to win elections.

Passionless Race (4.00 / 1)
Twleve months ago a "movement" was underway.

Now, nothing.

No one is excited about voting for either Christie or Corzine. No one has "the drive".

It is my belief that this will benefit Corzine if he can get most of those people who have made New Jersey a Blue State motivated just enough to vote on November 3.

He does not have to get them to love him, just vote for him.

I believe Christie has peaked and those thinking about voting for Daggett will see that it is a waste of time. Christie will get 46 % of the vote, maximum.

At least 47 % will vote for Corzine if he can just remind them that he is a Democrat in a Democratic State who has done the best job possible for the middle and working class people during some historically bad times.

Corzine better start reminding us why we like voting for a Democrat. He can still win this thing.

Running *Rightly* Corzine Can Win By 10 Points!!! (0.00 / 0)
Christie truly IS a complete hypocrite and an incompetent petty partisan hack who also happens to be a bully and a morally/ethically corrupt character who has no business in any position of trust.

There are tons of facts to massively flesh out the above assertions.   There is no need to lie or to make anything up or to exaggerate.    Christie is, objectively, a defective and fatally flawed candidate.

That factual objective case needs to be made without any malice or mercy.

And when Christie comes up with bullshit like

"...he hit ME..."

in his defense he only digs himself deeper into the quicksand of sewage from which he is running for office.

It's astounding to me that Corzine has yet to take on Christie directly, man to man.

Corzine needs to Hire Christie's Ad Firm (0.00 / 0)

I got to see both of the candidate's TV ads last night during the late news.  Christie's "Failure" commercial is very effective, I think, in getting his point across.  Corzine's commercial was a positive one highlighting paid family leave and autism coverage, but it was very subdued and you really had to pay attention to realize the Governor had accomplished something.  Corzine's campaign has to have an energetic ad along the lines of:

Person 1: "What has Gov. Corzine accomplished?"

Person 2:"Actually, a lot"

Then a serious of people listing the achievements and what it means for them and New Jersey.

Several of them have to be along the lines of : "Gov. Corzine has reduced government spending"

"Gov. Corzine has stopped runaway property tax increases"

"Gov. Corzine is fixing the NJ's tax problem without hurting the needy."

It could be a very effective ad.  I just don't see Corzine's current ads as winning this campaign.

You do realize.... (0.00 / 0)
that the people running Christie's ad campaign have collectively lost the last 5 statewide races in New Jersey, and Corzine's team is undefeated since Christie Whitman left office?

[ Parent ]
Maybe they've lost their touch (3.00 / 2)

Personally, based on the commercials I've seen, I would vote for Christie (if I didn't know already what a mistake that would be). Corzine's team may have been successful in the past, but I don't see that success in the current campaign.

Can't Take the Truth? (4.00 / 2)

Even NJN news (Reporter's Roundtable) says that Christie's ad is very effective.   So what's the problem with my comment?

The only problem I see is blind faith that the Corzine team is going to pull out a win based upon the so-far dismal political commercials.

Again, even NJN news said that Christie has told voters more about what he'll do as Governor than Gov. Corzine has.  Gov. Corzine is my candidate, but he'd better start telling people why he should be their candidate too.

Corzine Would Do Better Letting Clammyc..... (0.00 / 0)
...run his campaign and make his ads.

The pros and the consultants are killing him this time out.  Just about any intelligent competent passionate progressive would do better.

Again, the Christie game is all based on distortions, deceptions, distractions and bullshit........he should be getting his ass kicked right about now.   Waiting for the last week of the campaign to get really serious is a risky business.

As it is, Christie is actually getting away with just hiding in the shadows of his wrote stump speech......and waiting out the clock.

[ Parent ]
Shouldn't rest on laurels (2.00 / 1)

I also thought the Christie ad was very effective.  It's the second best ad out there.  Daggett's is my favorite, albeit not necessarily effective in its message.

Corzine needs to put some of those millions into real media talent, not more-of-the-same folks.

[ Parent ]
An Analogy: (0.00 / 0)
I'm a baseball man, so I am going to use a baseball analogy.

Would you rather have Mariano River, arguably the best closer in MLB history pitching in the 9th inning, or some rookie?

Corzine's media team is like Mariano Rivera-I think they know a little bit more about winning (and have much more in depth polling to craft Corzine's message).

[ Parent ]
Corzine needs to make people feel good about NJ (4.00 / 1)
Christie's whole campaign is about how New Jersey is so awful. That may not be quite as self-destructive in a gubernatorial campaign as a presidential one, but it still hurts. People who want to vote in a New Jersey election don't want to be told their state stinks.

The antidote isn't to attack Christie, it's to talk about how NJ is already better than it would have been with less prescient leadership and even more importantly, how it's going to get better from here.

Couldn't Agree More (0.00 / 0)

Corzine needs a positive ad that tells the voters the positive direction he's taking NJ.

[ Parent ]
Walk and Chew Gum At Same Time.... (0.00 / 0)
Just being positive or just being comparative/negative isn't good enough under these circumstances.

The positive and passionate and loving aspects of Jon Corzine must MANIFEST.  Yes!!!

ON the other hand, he also needs to show that he can be tough and that he can stand up to a lying bully and that he can kick ass when ass needs to be kicked.

Maybe I'm totally nuts, but I hoinestly don't even see Christie as a legitimate candidate!  The bum should have been shamed out of the race WEEKS ago!!!

The press has proven to either incompetent of totally bought off; they are not going to do their job, that's obvious.

Jon Corzine, if he REALLY REALLY REALLY wants this job, is going to have to personally fight for it.

[ Parent ]
I agree and fear the condition isn't met. (0.00 / 0)
Why did he want the job, rather than staying as Senator? For itself? Because he dreamed of the presidency? And whatever the reason, after the accident, does it still apply? At least Menendez as Senator hasn't been as bad as I feared. But Corzine needs to prove he's not a dilettante whose legacy will be Chris Christie.
