Quote of the Day: "Take it like a man, you lost"

by: Jason Springer

Mon Sep 14, 2009 at 10:24:00 PM EDT

In Morristown, Donald Cresitello lost the Democratic Primary in June to Zoning Board Chairman Tim Dougherty 62% to 37%. Democrats want Cresitello to support the Dougherty in the General, but he can't bring himself to do that leaving for some colorful reactions:
"Donny, what the hell are you doing?" says one enraged Democratic Party member. "Take it like a man. You lost."
But Cresitello isn't backing down himself:
"I'm not going to support Dougherty because of what they did to me in the last week of the campaign," says Cresitello. "They ran flyers with bags of money in front of me, saying I never saw a development project I didn't like. They damaged my reputation by telling voters I'm a racist. They told people I hated Obama. They damaged my reputation with African Americans, which was an outstanding reputation."
It looks like the Mayor is not willing to forgive and/or forget.

Is It True??? (0.00 / 0)
I'm not familiar with what happened on the ground in this race.   I didn't follow it at all.

Is Cresitello a good honest decent guy?  Or is he a racist, corrupt machine pol who sold out to developers?   I don't know.

If the answer to those questions is yes, and if the Dougherty campaign legitimately called him out on those points, then Cresitello deserved to lose and to hell with him and his attitude.

On the other hand, if Cresitello is innocent of the charges, and the  Dougherty campaign did actually employ dirty tactics to win....then I could understand Cresitello's feelings.

A quick search reveals that Cresitello did have a "thing" for Latino immigrants

Local law enforcement has established immigration checkpoints in areas frequented by Latinos including churches, flea markets, and trailer parks. [dailyrecord.com] this is a typical tactic that a xenophobic politician uses in order to pander to its racist populace.

Here's one in which, Cresitello comes out against pay to play reforms....

In another slap against the mayor, residents approved a "pay to play" measure capping political contributions by local contractors.

That one passed by a 2,721-839 vote--76 percent--despite the mayor's opposition to it.

Mayor Cresitello said those restrictions--which limit contractors to $300 in contributions to individual elected officials in town--will inhibit people from seeking office.

"It allows only rich people to run," he said.

Now, this is the result of just of few seconds searching the net........but it does seem that there is indeed some "smoke" here.

It looks like Cresitello will, de facto be supporting the Republican.

As for whether he actually is a racist, I don't really know.   But I can say this much, one thing that is actually WORSE than racism is not being one and then pandering to other people's bigotry and fear in order to reap political gain.

And as for whether or not Cresitello has ever actually taken any money from developers in order to advance their interests, I don't really know for sure.  But I can say that opposing a strengthening of campaign finance ordinances the way he has sure smells fishy, at best.

If you have the PEOPLE on your side ready to VOTE for you based on your values and positions (and record if you're the incumbent)  then you don't need to take any dirty money from special interests.

Morristown Democrats have spoken.  Cresitello should respect their wishes and own his defeat and support the winner.   At the very least he should STFU.

At this rate it wouldn't shock me to see Cresitello appearing as a guest on the Sean Hannity show and switching parties pretty soon......

Go Tim Dougherty!!!
