Role play for Debate prep

by: Jason Springer

Sun Sep 13, 2009 at 04:38:30 PM EDT

Yes, we're still talking about debates. But not who will participate, how many and when they will be held. Now we're talking about preparing for what has already been agreed to:
As Gov. Jon Corzine prepares to for the gubernatorial debates, he has asked Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney (D-West Deptford)  to play his Republican opponent, former U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie.  That may cause some buzz among Democrats who have noticed that Corzine did not ask Senate President Richard Codey (D-Roseland), who was New Jersey's Governor from 2004 to 2006.  Sweeney is expected to challenge Codey in a leadership fight set for after the general election.

Christie has picked State Sen. Bill Baroni (R-Hamilton) to play Corzine.  Baroni has played Corzine in Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Franks' 2000 debate preparations, and played U.S. Senator Robert Menendez when Republican Tom Kean was preparing for his 2006 debate.

Corzine used Rob Andrews to prep in 2005. Something tells me that any time we see the names Steve Sweeney or Dick Codey for the next few months, it's going to be in the context of the pending contest for Senate President and which one benefits from that latest news. Do you think it's a distraction to have the talk about potential leadership elections or will they serve as a motivating factor for each side to show their influence and turn out voters in support of the Governor?

I don't know about the Senate Prez issue, but ... (0.00 / 0)
I would have bet anything that Corzine would pick Artie Lang as the Christie stand-in.

Sweeney's an excellent choice (2.00 / 1)

Is there a Democrat more Republican in his views?  Sweeney could run as a Republican if he ever wanted.   Who better to play the Republican opposition.

Hmmm... (0.00 / 0)
Sweeney is the reason Paid Family Leave passed over this past year.  Sweeney may not be Loretta Weinberg, but he is definitely a good Democrat.

Anti-Marriage Equality & Advocates a Race to the Bottom (0.00 / 0)

Is Steve Sweeney wrong on every issue? No.  But neither are the Republicans.  Sweeney's support of Paid Family Leave was the high point of his career and I wish his career had more such high points.  But on many Democratic issues, where is he?  He's noticeable absent on marriage equality, and rumor suggests he's actually against it.  And he's been the most vocal advocate of a race to the bottom for employee benefits and salaries for everyone who's not in his union.  On the last issue, he's been far more vocal than even most Republicans, so it's hard to count him as a good Democrat.

I think (0.00 / 0)
Sweeney can rock himself some very good, very well-researched, Chris Christie.

Would give anything to be a fly on the wall of that debate prep.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

he thinks South Jersey Dems are better for channeling Republicans?

Sweeney Criticism shows Bias (0.00 / 0)
Raising minimum wage.

Promoting wage fairness Project labor Agreements on construction jobs.

Paid Family Leave.

State worker pension stability initiatives.

Common sense government worker health co-pays.

I can go on and on.

There is a very obvious bias on this site to anyone who is a friend of the Norcross family. Whether that person does well for the public or not he is attacked.

There is also a bias against South Jersey elected officials. Those who criticize refuse to understand that "us" who live South Of Trenton are a little more fiscally conservative . THAT DOES NOT MAKE US BAD DEMOCRATS.

Too many people on this site think that they and only they represent the "true" thinking of Democrats. Quite frankly some of you sound like right wing Republicans  in your narrow view of how people should think.

This is supposed to be an open and progressive site. But I don't see a lot of open discussion . I see a lot holier than thou conversation where some seem to be sitting in judgement of others.

Lets get the record straight.

Compare Steve Sweeney's record of accomplishment to any of your other Senators. What has Codey promoted  AND PASSED  in the last 5 years?

Marraige equality should not be the litmus test for Democrats. It is one issue. It will pass . Do you know how many of you sound like anti-abortion right wingers when you declare people " not worthy " of being Democrats simply because they have not stood beside you on that issue?

I thought a "progressive site" would attract more open minded people. But narrowness seems to be prevailing.

Is there no room in "your " Democratic Party for a Weinberg and a Sweeney?

Some of the elitest on this site should stop and look into the mirror. Don't talk about "big tents" if you intend to stay in your own pup tent and sit and judge everyone but yourself.

Norcross, Sweeney, and Political Machines (0.00 / 0)
"There is a very obvious bias on this site to anyone who is a friend of the Norcross family. Whether that person does well for the public or not he is attacked."

It is not whether you are a friend of the Norcross family.  It is whether you are part of the Norcross machine.

History shows that political machines almost always (always?) turn out to self-serving and not in the best interests of their representatives.

Does the current set of representatives (Sweeney, Norcross, Roberts, etc.) provide representation on some liberal and progressive issues? Yes.

But the real question is whether, if the machine wasn't there, would their constituents and New Jersey as a whole, be getting better representation.  It's been pointed out on many political blogs that the real corruption in NJ isn't the embezzlement and bribing.  It's the legal kind where public contracts are given to friends and family, who perform a job, but not necessarily the best job that would serve NJ citizens' interests.   It doesn't required one to be a cynic to conclude from the massive insider dealings in the Norcross "family" that everyone involved in getting well-taken care of at the state's expense.  For example, Steve Sweeney is still a dual office holder.  One has to wonder why.

We need openness here. (0.00 / 0)
'I thought a "progressive site" would attract more open minded people. But narrowness seems to be prevailing.  '

I completely agree.   There are a few people on this site that call anyone who's critical of the Norcross machine a bad Democrat or a Republican.   Or even an "elitest", whatever that is.

Please note, Firstamend07, that you are the one who's been calling people you disagree with names.
