Norcross chosen to replace Roberts

by: Jason Springer

Sat Sep 12, 2009 at 12:00:19 PM EDT

From an email sent out by Chairman Angelini of Gloucester County and Beach of Camden County:
Donald W. Norcross was unanimously nominated today to be the Democratic candidate for the 5th District State Assembly seat being vacated by Speaker Joseph Roberts. Norcross, a longtime labor leader whose work on behalf of working families, charities and civic ventures has earned him the respect of ordinary citizens as well as government and community leaders, was chosen at a special meeting of the Camden and Gloucester Democratic county committees. A resident of Camden, Norcross will be seeking the position left open by Roberts' decision not to run for another term in the November election.
And a comment from the new Assembly candidate:
"I believe we must change the way business is done in Trenton," Norcross told hundreds of Democrats attending the meeting at Brooklawn American Legion Post # 72.  "We must put our partisan differences and the special interests aside to do what is best for the ordinary, hard-working taxpayers of this state. The status quo is not working. The state government is wasting too much of our money."

Norcross called for a state-government spending freeze and a moratorium on tax increases. He said that if elected he will push initiatives to create jobs for the growing number of unemployed New Jerseyans, institute tax breaks and other economic incentives for small businesses and stimulate New Jersey's struggling economy."

Norcross will now run with Camden City Council President Angel Fuentes for the seats in November. The changes may not be done in the 5th however, as State Senator Dana Redd is expected to win Mayor of Camden. That would mean that a new Senator would be coming as well and Wally speculated about the implications of that change on a potential contest for Senate President. I'm sure there are varied opinions on this as always. Have at it, but let's try to keep it civil.

I'd like to see (0.00 / 0)
a woman considered to replace Dana Redd. This district is already losing one woman with Fuentes potentially replacing Nilsa Cruz Perez. I don't want to see two less women in office when this is all done.

Fantastic Choice (0.00 / 0)
A new voice for the working person in Trenton. Will not be a wall flower either.

The Machine Rolls On (4.00 / 2)
It's hard to believe that Norcross can make the statement:

"I believe we must change the way business is done in Trenton."

He is the brother and product of the machine politics that have brought NJ to financial and ethical ruin.

Silly statement (1.50 / 2)
Donald Norcross is a good ,ethical person who has fought for working people his whole life.

The people in the District will decide, not you, whether he is right for the job.

You sound like a Christie campaign add.

Yeah, right (4.00 / 1)
What choice do the people of the 5th District have?  As the Democratic nominees, Fuentes and Norcross are the almost certain victors in November.  Camden won't be electing a Republican, that's for sure. Donald Norcross may be a good person, but he's just as much a part of the South Jersey machine as his brother.

Machine Politics in NJ (4.00 / 3)

You do know that there are political machines in NJ and they undermine democracy, yes?  The people of Norcross' district have been deprived of the opportunity to vote on who their candidate should be by this charade of how candidate Norcross was chosen.

How does one criticize machine politics in NJ without being called a Republican by you?  This Norcross example is nepotism and machine politics at its worst.   I would hope all Democrats would be criticizing this action.

Freedom of Choice (0.00 / 0)
There will be two candidates, maybe more ,running against Donald Norcross in November. If he is such an evil person who is ready to undermind the democratic system of government in the 5th District then the voters in that District will have a chance to vote him out.

If you think he is underminding the democratic system I suggest you get out and work to defeat him.

Please respect the voters of the 5th district and respect their intellegence.

As citizens of this State they have the right to choose their representatives and Donald Norcross will be a great representative.

Part of the Machine (0.00 / 0)

There is really no response to what you wrote.  Clearly, you don't see that you are part of the machine and the corruption afflicting much of New Jersey politics.  In a true democracy, you are not allowed to rig the system.

Yes, voters do get a vote between Norcross and the Republican candidate in the fall, but that doesn't change the fact that the Norcross machine has manipulated the system so that voters did not get to choose who the Democrat candidate is.   The Norcross machine has thwarted the democratic process from happening in South Jersey and that is morally reprehensible.   If Donald Norcross were the great candidate some people claim, he could and should have won an open primary.   But he didn't.

Corruption is corruption, whether it occurs in the primary or in the general election.  This example just shows how corrupt the Democratic party has become in some parts of the state.  Let's just be honest about what is going on here and what principles you're defending.

Fallacy of False Choice... (0.00 / 0)
...I would rather elect Norcross than a generic Republican.  That's realpolitik, for now.

If the Republican's were truly intelligent they would find a seriously reform minded liberal/progressive Republican fiscal conservative (some must exist ;-) and run THAT person against the machine candidate. That candidate would have my support (and that of all Republicans and all informed reform minded democrats) and would likely win he day.

Norcross can't win on the spoils of patronage votes alone.  There is no other reason to vote for him if there is a truly progressive alternative.

Your abject failure to even acknowledge the simple existence of a Norcross political machine is intellectually dishonest.  (We already concede that you are far from ignorant or stupid ;-).

No Corruption here (2.00 / 2)
Corruption is a strong word. It is unarranted. Donald Norcross is not corrupt. The members of the 5th District Democratic caucus are not corrupt.

Joe Roberts quit. Someone has to replace him. The rules allow that to be done from a caucus.

Where is the corruption?

Listen, you might nto like Donald Norcross and you might not like the 5th District Democrats but you are being totally unfair in stating that they are corrupt.

Donald Norcross has not been elected. I suggest that you and the other "haters" sign on to the campaign of his opponents . That is the democratic thing to do.

I hope you don't try to pull a Republican swift boat tactic on Donald Norcross.

If you want I can put you in contact with the Republican Party candidate in the 5 th District.

I myself will be sticking with a candidate who will fight for the working men and women of the 5 th District in the tradition of Joe Roberts.

Political Corruption (4.00 / 1)

One of the main examples of political corruption is nepotism.  We have a prime example of nepotism here.

No "Haters" Here.... (0.00 / 0)
...just people who want NJ politics to be democratic.  That's a good and loving agenda.  :-)

Political machines dominating our state are categorically antithetical to democracy and are inherently morally and ethically corrupt.

You can spin for Norcross for the rest of your life; but you can't make shit smell like a rose.

If you're looking for hatred and ugliness, take a look at how you feel when your Norcross machine is exposed for being what it is.  Take a look and a listen to how Norcross reacts when confronted......I suspect you'll find lots of negative/violent emotions there.  Eh?

Camden democrats don't have a choice. (4.00 / 1)
Fortunately for liberals, the choice we are given is usually a pretty good on on the issues.

But most Democrats in Camden (Even the good guys such as Beach, Redd, Ripa) all were appointed by the party to their current post.

Jay Is 100% Right On This Point!!! (0.00 / 0)
On one hand you seem to resent/deny the obvious reality that there exists a Norcross machine.  LOL

Then you define "corruption" in a way that the only "corruption" that exists is that which is prosecuted and convicted.  LOL

Sorry "first", folks aren't that stupid.  Your spinning is so pathetically obvious that it's become ludicrous and even boring.

To Clarify The "Point"..... (0.00 / 0)

"Camden Democrats don't have a choice...."

Sure some of the "good guys" are allowed to sound liberal now and then.....but on any vote that can help or hurt the financial/political interests of the Norcross machine, they are obligated to tow the machine line......and that should not be.

Woudn't it be cools to actually have a real democracy in NJ instead of machine dominated politics?

We've become so used to being shafted by the machines that we take it as "normal/acceptible".   And that's a shame.
