Reactions to Obama Health Care Speech

by: Hopeful

Wed Sep 09, 2009 at 09:21:13 PM EDT

Official reactions to the speech are coming in. Leave yours in the comments. Also, go read Ted Kennedy's final letter to Barack Obama.  (Update: The big star of the night is GOP heckler Joe Wilson, now the top trending topic on twitter.  Not in a good way.)

Senator Frank Lautenberg:

"President Obama showed great leadership tonight and made the case for why health care reform is so important to our economy and of course, the well-being of our families.  We need to make quality, affordable and stable health care available to every American so that no individual or family drowns in medical debt or is denied the care they need.  I share the President's vision and pledge to fight for reforms that will benefit New Jersey families."

Representative Rush Holt:

"Tonight President Obama clearly stated why the status quo is unacceptable and why we must fix our broken health insurance system. Americans are living sicker, dying younger, and paying more than we should or than residents of other major countries do.

"My guest for tonight's speech was Adira Riben, a Monmouth Junction resident, who recently lost her job and her insurance.  She is concerned about the difficulty in finding new health insurance because she suffers from two chronic health conditions. I hear from many residents who are happy with the coverage they have. Before she lost her job, I imagine Ms. Riben was happy with her coverage too. Unfortunately, almost everyone is one stroke of bad luck away from something they can't handle.

"It shouldn't be this way. The fight for meaningful health insurance reform has lasted 100 years. We are closer than ever to ensuring that all Americans - whether they have insurance or not - will have security and stability in their health care."

Senator Bob Menendez, "a member of the key Senate Finance Committee:"

"President Obama stood before Congress and the nation tonight with the true leadership, vision and honesty that the American people respect. It was important for him to explain why the status quo is unhealthy for our loved ones, our family finances and our nation's budget, and how we can fix it. He did all of that with strength and purpose, and we are on our way to healing the health insurance system.

"This is a serious matter that deserves an honest and serious approach. It is time to rise above the politics of fabrication and fear that powerful, entrenched interests have used to turn the debate into a brawl. Americans demanded a change from the cynical politics that took our nation in the wrong direction, and we are standing up for responsible policy and politics. Together with President Obama, many of us are committed to making sure that your health insurance won't drain your finances but will actually be there for you when you need it the most. We are going to pass long overdue reform that makes ours a healthier and wealthier nation."

Update 2: Frank Pallone and Jon Corzine below the fold

Hopeful :: Reactions to Obama Health Care Speech
Representative Pallone:

"I applaud the President for a clear and convincing address to Congress and to the American people at a time it was needed most. The President was thorough and decisive in reminded everyone of the vital need to reform health insurance and the importance of acting quickly.

"The President called on the American character when he spoke of the importance of timely action. We would do well in remembering both points as we continue our work in Congress."

Governor Corzine:

"President Obama hit all the right notes tonight in detailing his plan to finally make health care reform a reality in Washington.  His insistence that any new bill include required coverage for vital preventive care like mammograms is right for our nation and for New Jersey's families.  As the President said 'that makes sense, it saves money, and it saves lives.'

"Under my administration, we've extended coverage to over 90,000 more children.  Now, with a real partner in President Obama, we'll make stable, secure and affordable health care a reality for all New Jerseyans."

I prefer the Menendez statement above to his
twitter one:

Pres Obama's speech on health care, made a compelling case for action by reducing costs, providing coverage, and ending insurance denials.

"This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President's remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility."

Bullshit! (4.00 / 1)
Wilson had a copy of that speech ahead of time, so this "overcome with emotion" excuse is bullshit! He wanted his 15 minutes of fame, so he did his little shout-out. He just hoped he would be feted (or fellated) on Faux as a hero. He's scum!

Absolutely. Want to bet that the Republicans cooked this up deliberately so that the word liar floated into the news cycle?

Backfired, I'd say. $58,000 raised so far for his opponent since last night's of douchebaggery. Contribute here.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Gottal Love Obama, But Without a Public Option... (0.00 / 0)
....reform is a sham, and will be a disaster.  If Obama get's what he asked for last night WITHOUT A ROBUST PUBLIC OPTION, he will be a one term president as the "plan" will be mercilessly trashed from BOTH the right and the left for the next three years....and rightly so.

The health insurance industry is inherently parasitic and corrupt.  They are not structured to really give a shit about human decency.  They are there to make money.  Period.

If they succeed in getting a mandate forcing insurance on the nation against our will....and then fining people who don't want it; that is no "option".  That outcome will be framed as an ABUSIVE dictat.....and it will be true.

Frankly, single payer is THE way.   It's a simple clear bill that's less than 80 pages.  Everybody in from day one.   Nobody out.  Simple.   No abusive dictat.  Inclusive people based care.

What this boils down to is who runs American and whose interests are being served by congress and the president.   The interests of people?   Or those of a multi-trillion dollar industry that is used to bleeding us all dry and getting away with it.  If the anser is that latter; then things will only get worse.

Greed driven health care can't work.   Everybody screwing everybody isn't a viable way to run health care.

A robust public option that would SIMPLY allow anyone who wanted to to simply buy into medicare would resolve this in a compromised way; but one that would be acceptable....as it would lead to single payer.  The insurance industry knows this, that's why they are fighting tooth and nail to rip us off for another trillion dollars in subsidies to stay in business for a while longer.

If there is to be no exclusion for pre-existing conditions, portability, no caps, universal coverage, and community rating......then the insurance industry should be able to fire 95% of their staff, who spend most of their time working theor asses off to find ways of avoiding sick people or people who might become sick and paying any claims that they can find any excuse not to pay.

In other words, if we were to REALLY get even minimal reform (i.e. a robust public option) there would eventually be no need for an insurance industry.....and they know that.
