It's not the tickets. It's the abuse of power.

If there is one thing that is frustrating about articles that "seem" to help push a narrative about "Wrong Way Christie", it that they miss the most important point.  An OpEd by James Ahern today comes close to hitting the mark as it talks about irresponsibility and endangering others (especially his 4 children who were in the car when he was speeding) - and while he talks about it being a reflection on something we can all relate to in terms of everyday tasks and obeying the law, there is an even bigger point about Christie's driving record.

And it has nothing to do with his speeding or his numerous actions, or even his going the wrong way down a one way street and arguing that "the motorcyclist hit him" and lying about whether there was a lawsuit - which in and of itself is an enormous lack of any sense of responsibility.

It is the abuse of his office - his position as US Attorney that he used in both known incidents - in order to curry favor for himself.   The other day, I wrote about how Christie has one set of rules for himself and another for everyone else.  And while this is a perfect example of what I was talking about in that diary, the even bigger issue is whether New Jerseyans want to have a sleazy lawyer who can't take responsibility for his actions and uses his position to abuse power for personal gain as their Governor.

In the 2002 accident where he sent a motorcyclist to a Trauma Level 1 hospital, er, "was hit by a motorcyclist",  we had this:

"The officer has a lot of discretion at that point," Cosgrove said. "He could've issued a summons in that case, but he did not."

Asked whether Christie's job title factored into the officer's decision, Cosgove said, "I don't think I want to make that kind of deduction, but I think the facts speak for themselves."

And in the 2005 speeding/unregistered/uninsured vehicle "sedan" with 4 children and 3 adults in it (certainly safe), Christie either said he was a US Attorney or the tow truck driver "happened to know who he was" (sure) and even if so, the tow truck driver was amazingly able to get the police to allow Christie's car to not get towed.

In both instances, the DOJ Rules prohibit this abuse of power:

Use of Title. With rare exceptions, employees engage in outside activities in their private rather than official capacities. Therefore, when engaging in outside activities in their private capacity, employees may not indicate or represent in any way that they are acting on behalf of the Department, or that they are acting in their official capacity.

Once again, Christie shows that he is nothing more than using his power to get more power and take advantage for his own personal benefit.

And that is the "law and order" candidate?

Obama set the bar low (0.00 / 0)
when Obama uttered the words Timothy Geithner's "innocent mistake" shouldn't bar him from the post leading urgent efforts to revive the economy. l pay taxes why should our secretary of Treasury abuse his power ? We kept hearing the Caroline Kennedy had a tax problem.  The committee that writes tax law, the House Ways and Means Committee, well their chairman Charlie Rangel,  he failed to report seventy-five thousand dollars in income. Al Franken didn't pay his taxes in what, eighteen states .All a abuse of power .As Obama stated "innocent mistake" shouldn't bar him from the post leading urgent efforts to revive the economy." Why should a innocent mistake bar Christie from reviving New Jersey? People don't care about speeding tickets when things are as bad as they are in N.J. just like Tim Guietner would never be where he is today if we were not in such a mess ....The voters seem to understand this, we have bigger issues here !

um (0.00 / 0)
the whole "not paying taxes" thing was about the loan that Christie gave to someone who worked for him.  And as I stated in the title, let alone throughout the diary, this isn't about the tickets.

I don't think that any of your examples are in any way about using the position to get out of breaking the law.  And unlike not paying taxes (which Christie and a slew of republicans are guilty of, even though you only conveniently cite Democrats), Christie's infractions (1) injured others and (2) put lives in danger.

That, in and of itself is bad enough, but unlike Corzine (who I am sure you will bring up even though he wasn't driving) - who demanded that he be given a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt and then made PSAs about driving safety, Christie used his position to avoid responsibility.

As for the "bigger issues", please tell me any specifics that Christie has offered up on these "bigger issues".

Do you approve of someone abusing their power and office for personal gain, like Christie repeatedly did?

What do you think Christie will do? (0.00 / 0)
a) There are many laws and other restrictions that will limit his ability to do things, including the budget deficit.

B) Property taxes are determined at the local level.  The only way the state can help is by giving municipalities more money.  The only way that could happen is via higher state taxes.  Do you want to pay them?

C)  What control does Corzine have over the pharmaceutical mergers, the Wall Street collapse and gaming in Pennsylvania which contributed to economic weakness?

D) And how will we benefit when he eliminates insurance mandates?  Will you be happy when annual mammograms, well child care, prostate exams and pap smears are not required to be covered?

E) When has Christie given one speciifc only to say he is conservative (we know what that means) and that he would not have accepted the government stimulus?

Distractive BS, ANd You Know It..... (3.00 / 1)
You disingenuously state...

Why should a innocent mistake bar Christie from reviving New Jersey

There is nothing innocent about driving with reckless abandon and being GUILTY of breaking the law!!!  You are spinning like a top.

Then you go on to disinform...

People don't care about speeding tickets when things are as bad as they are in N.J.

First, "things" are far better in NJ than in most of the nations...and the REASON "things" are as bad as they are is 100% attributable to Chris Christie's old boss GEORGE BUSH!   Secondly, Christie is guilty of far worse than recklessly repeatedly and habitually breaking the laws against speeding.

Chistie is a LIAR and you know it!

If the same fact pattern re Christie's driving record had emerged about Corzine you would be all over Corzine, and you know it....and it would be DESERVED!!!

The fact is that Christie is a lying, irresponsible, reckless, law breaking, dangerous hypocrite who, if he had any integrity at all, would be dropping out of the race right now instead of trying to brazen it out.

From my understanding (0.00 / 0)
Christie will give aid to schools on a per child basis ,reduce the school burden of property taxes (25% to 30%) by increasing income tax which will be given back to towns via aid per child ....On Corzine insisting getting a ticket .Of course he did the accident was on national TV the minute it happened . getting back to issues we need some new thinking about schools in the state ,you can't have Trenton taking billions from towns and giving that money to a few select urban districts .It must be distributed more fairly .per pupil does seem to be the only way

School (0.00 / 0)
You seem to forget about the court case that Corzine won which will distribute the money among many more districts.  Trenton was giving the money because of a court decision.

So you are for higher taxes! Believe me, Christie's base will not want to pay higher income taxes nor will the rest of NJ. He says he will lower taxes.

Corzine's formula (0.00 / 0)
did not take any money away from the Abbot districts. Without the Abbots losing any money, how is it possible to distribute more to the remaining districts? (hint: higher taxes)

Quote from Star Ledger (0.00 / 0)
Beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, state aid could drop in the former Abbott districts if their enrollment drops by 5 percent or more.

Right... (0.00 / 0)
COULD drop IF their enrollement drops...

and if the enrollement drops in the surburbs? Yes, their aid drops too... I guess that's the basis of the 'per pupil' formula...

Not to mention in 4 years this happens... meanwhile the extra aid to the suburbs is coming from higher taxes...

you do realize that (3.00 / 1)
a court ruled on the school funding formula, right?

So what are you proposing - that Christie waste taxpayer money by taking a recent decision back to another court?

Sorry, nice try, but thanks for playing.  But maybe I shouldn't blame you, since you are as full of real ideas as your candidate is.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

We all come out winners (0.00 / 0)
If CC decides to raise income taxes by 50% and cut out school funding from the property tax .The deciding factor is that people  making higher incomes will /can pay more for schools .if there property tax bill is cut in half those people that are paying over 8% or more of there income to property tax will finally get some tax relief .will also satisfy Abbots by paying equally  for every child .As for wasting taxpayers money  the courts system Corzine has that market cornered with e-mails go round   or how about that  $7.3 million of taxpayer funds Corzine spent on his toll road scheme that he is still hiding from us

$7.3 million? (0.00 / 0)
besides the laugh from your comment about Corzine hiding things, it is an incredibly small number when compared to the tens of millions that Christie gave in no bid deals to his buddies and former bosses/colleagues that also saved lawbreakers from any real accountability for their crimes.

When it was to his personal benefit, of course.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

you keep making Corzine look like a fool (0.00 / 0)
Not only is Corzine  awarding of a no-bid contract to Staples illegal, it suggests corruption. Corzine said, "Fixing the economy requires clear vision." Well, after this decision, someone better get him to an ophthalmologist to have his eyes checked...http://www.app.com/article/20090827/OPINION04/908280337/0/OPINION/No-bid-contracts-show-disdain-for-NJ

Oh and about that wasted 7.3 million (0.00 / 0)
So far, there has been $7.3 million spent on "legal work, a traffic and revenue study and an engineering study for the toll plan," according to Tom Vincz, a state Treasury Department spokesman. He added that the studies have been put on hold for the time being. http://nbs.gmnews.com/news/200...

I can see why (0.00 / 0)
you want to stick to speeding tickets !et back to me after the election

I Can See Why.... (0.00 / 0)
...you are so desperate to avoid admitting the demonstrable incontrovertible  FACTS regarding Christie being a reckless habitual lawbreaker who abuses his power and then lies about it.
