Norcross on why he is running

by: Hopeful

Thu Sep 03, 2009 at 03:05:52 PM EDT

We all know by now that Donald Norcross will run for the seat being vacated by Joe Roberts. I'll admit I don't know much about him: The papers mainly mention him as George Norcross's brother, but Blue Jersey users who do know him all seem to praise him.  I was just forwarded an e-mail in which Donald Norcross lays out the motivation for his candidacy and his qualifications for the Assembly.  I must say it's an impressive case:
Hopeful :: Norcross on why he is running
Dear Friend:

I wanted to personally let you know that I will be a candidate for the open 5th District State Assembly seat in this November's election. As many of you know, our friend and colleague Joe Roberts has decided not to seek another term. Speaker Roberts has served this district and all of New Jersey with class and distinction for nearly two decades, and his leadership will be sorely missed.

I am asking for your support in this campaign in part because I want to continue the work that Speaker Roberts has done on behalf of our region. His success in bringing critically needed state resources to South Jersey is unmatched and must be continued. His commitment to fiscal responsibility, especially in these difficult economic times, must become a way of life in Trenton. And the high standards he set for integrity and accountability for our elected officials should be a model for all.

I am also running to bring my experience, deep-rooted knowledge of our region and sense of shared purpose with the people to the task of making state government work for the taxpayers - not the special interests. I have come to know many of you through my work in organized labor and my participation in countless charitable causes, as well as through my association with the state and local Democratic Party. In many ways, representing you in the State Assembly would be an extension of the work I've done, the associations and friendships I've made and the things I've learned about this region and its people over the last three decades.

I am an electrician by trade. After serving as an apprentice in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in 1980, I rose through the ranks to become assistant business manager of the IBEW Local 351. I am also president of the Southern New Jersey AFL-CIO. I have seen firsthand the hardships our working families face each and every day, with many losing their jobs or seeing their paychecks cut. At the AFL-CIO, we have created countless jobs for area residents, boosted minority membership in unions, and established training programs to give people the skills they need for good-paying jobs. Trenton owes it to our citizens to cut wasteful state-government spending, create jobs and hold the line on taxes.

As an executive board member of United Way of Camden County, I have learned the great things we can do as a community to make life better for the less fortunate among us. As vice-chairman of the coalition that brought the USS New Jersey to the Camden Waterfront, I saw how our elected officials - working in a bi-partisan way at all levels of government - can get things done to improve the economy and vitality of the region. And as a resident of Camden, where I was born, I understand how pulling together to redevelop the city's neighborhoods, waterfront and central business district can boost the region's economy and restore pride in the city.

Everything in my background has prepared me for this challenge. The Norcross family, led by the example of our father, George E. Norcross Jr., has made public service and charitable work a way of life. My father and my brother, George E. Norcross III, have been leaders in the unprecedented expansion of Cooper Hospital, creating thousands of jobs, boosting the economic climate in the city of Camden and vastly improving the quality of health care in the South Jersey region. They also established scholarship programs that have befitted scores of South Jersey students.

I learned from my father the values that have shaped my entire life - to work hard and to treat people with dignity and respect. My father helped make Southern New Jersey's unions the strong forces they are today, and he taught me to be an advocate for social justice, fair wages and safe working conditions for the common man. He instilled in me the importance of giving back to the community that has been so good to us.

Through his influence, my entire adult life has been dedicated to helping the working men and women of our area - advocating their causes and helping pass state and federal legislation important to their lives. I have worked alongside thousands of average Americans, whose very livelihoods depend upon acquiring and keeping their job, receiving a fair wage, and looking to our government to protect their rights and keep our economy strong.

Together, we have an opportunity to make a real difference in the way Trenton works. Joe Roberts has set the standard by which our elected officials should be judged, and his decision not to seek reelection has left a void that we must fill. It is critical that our party choose a candidate who can win in November and be the strong voice that Speaker Roberts has been for the hard-working families of this district. I'm confident I can be that voice, and that I will follow Speaker Roberts in doing the peoples' work in an effective, open and accountable way.

I would be deeply honored to have your support to be the Democratic Party's candidate for State Assembly in the 5th District and to represent you in Trenton. This is an opportunity for me to make a real difference in peoples' lives, and I will use my experience, judgment and vision to fight for you and your families. With hard work and sound decisions, we will keep the American dream alive for everyone. Thank you for your time and for your efforts to make our community the great place it is to live and work.

Sincerely,

Donald Norcross

Excellent choice (4.00 / 1)
One way or another he will be representing the Distirct. As an elected Assemblyman or as a State Senator he will do a great job.

South Jersey will continue to need out going ,working person friendly legislators who will not shy away from a battle .

Donald Norcross will fit that role.

Look At The Whole Family Record.... (0.00 / 0)
....hell, anyone can write a letter emphasizing everything good about themselves...and using high toned language to slide into an office that has been opened up by an unhealthy greasing with the proceeds of decades of machine politics.  It wouldn't surprise me if the author of that effectively worded letter was firstamend7 or some other Norcross PR flak or political "consultant".   There's, sadly, no shortage of genuinely bright and talented people willing to sell their immortal souls for a stinking paycheck.

Nothing in NJ will ever really get much better so long as our political system is run on the basis of (mostly) LEGALLY CORRUPT machine politics.

Every dollar they spend, every contract, every law rule regulation and hire is done on the basis of who you know and how well your connected and who gave how much to whom and it's mostly LEGAL.

The irony is that Chris Christie is himself a product of a family machine and a blazing hipocrite.

We are royally screwed.

"They Have No Choice"
South Jersey's most powerful political boss, Commerce Bank executive George Norcross, has a certain style:   You're either part of his machine, or you get crushed by it. Can anybody stop him?
By Richard Rys

From high above the most dangerous streets in the nation, -Camden
looks like a city of promise, chest puffed out and swollen with pride,
taking strong, confident strides toward its future. Just look to the
north. The shiny, graffiti-free RiverLINE train rolls past the old RCA
building, awaiting its makeover into high-end condos, and jogs on past
Campbell's Field and lifeless acres now earmarked for residential
development. Imagine that - people moving into Camden. He's had a hand in all of it.

Turn south and you'll see the Tweeter Center, which has stolen
summer concerts from the Mann across the river, so now everyone from
Coldplay to Brooks & Dunn bypasses Philly and heads to South
Jersey. Imagine that - Camden as a destination . He's not
surprised. He is George Norcross, and from the office window of one of
his minions at the Delaware River Port Authority, the view is
spectacular.

For Norcross, it's not enough to have risen from his modest
beginnings in Pennsauken to run Commerce Bank's insurance division,
complete with a seven-figure salary and some $88 million in stock. Not
bad for a college dropout. But for Norcross, not bad is not nearly good
enough. Not in business, and certainly not in politics, where the
49-year-old's years of leading the Camden County Democrats and his
fund-raising muscle have made him the most powerful boss south of Exit
7A, with considerable clout up the Turnpike as well. His Democratic
faithful control Camden and Gloucester counties, the power seat of
South Jersey, and pulls strings in most others. In Trenton, Norcross
allies decide which judges are elected, the language of the state
budget, and the passing of legislation. They also run agencies that
fund million-dollar projects - those listed above and many, many more.

here's a few more links related to Norcross (hell someone could probably write a whole series of books on the Norcroft machine)......

We live in a nation in which which many millions have come to believe that Barack Obama wants DEATH PANELS for old people....no fucking wonder that it's possible for  machine pols worth many hundreds of millions of dollars to politically brainwash most of the state.

The PROBLEM is that they are KILLING the goose that they are legally stealing from.   The nation and the state are practically way beyond bankrupt...Because of people like Norcroft and Ferierro and Bush and Christie.....we, the people, are being systemically shafted at every turn.

Sorry folks.  Unless there is a genuinely progressive transformation of NJ and national politics....the status quo sham of legalized corruption isn't sustainable.

Progressive politics is about more than saying some nice words and looking for a job in the party establishment.

I read that post and almost LOST MY LUNCH.

Then I thought it just be some kind of September Fool's joke - or maybe Colbert Report stuff.

How could folks on this site be so clueless? Just because it has a (D) after his name?

Norcross machine and the public interest?

Deep End (0.00 / 0)
You have been getting close but I think you justwent off the deep end.

Your idea, compared to everyone else's idea of a progressive revolution is very strange.

Donald Norcross is a stong labor person who will look out for the working men and women of this State. He is also highly involved in the United Way and has done many fantastic things for that organization.

You have to stop being so angry and get on board with those of us who are realists.

The real deep end.... (4.00 / 1)
...the state keeps on sinking deeper and deeper into the hole.  That's a fact.

Your machine friends dug the hole and they PROFIT from it,  you're the one in the "deep end".

As for being for the "working man" and giving to charity.....I bet Jimmy Hoffa was quite a charitable and pleasant fellow too, eh.

If the Norcross machine was about really supporting a genuinely progressive agenda...maybe it would be redemptive, but it's all about greed and power and ego.

As for being a "realist"; if being that means losing one's integrity; you can keep your sick evil subjective "reality".

The real reality is about the power of love and generosity and compassion and, yes....ideals made manifest!

Your path leads to death, suffering and extinction for the species.

Your "growth" and "success" is that of a malignant metastacizing tumor.

We shall see what the future brings.

I think you all can make your points without either submitting tomes or calling names. If not, please go start your own blog or take it off this one and just email each other.

K?

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

well put (0.00 / 0)
I agree. The hatred towards anyone who does not agree with the "progressive guru" serves no purpose.

Donald Norcross is a good person. Give him a shot.

The voters will have a choice to say yes or no to Donald Norcross in November.

Democracy will prevail!

Ladies and gentlemen, Assemblyman-elect Norcross (4.00 / 1)
Sure, he hasn't technically won the election yet, or even technically received the Democratic nomination to the seat, but it's fairly obvious that there's no conceivable way George Norcross's brother won't receive either of those things in Camden County now that he's announced he wants it.

I don't want to get into an argument with FirstAmend07 or anyone, but while Donald Norcross may very well be a good guy and a good choice for the Assembly, he's also the obvious product of the South Jersey Democratic machine.  I like Speaker Roberts, but I was more than a little aggravated that he announced that he wouldn't seek re-election three months after the primary.  He could've announced that this spring and allowed the primary electorate to vote for his successor, just as they voted to nominate Roberts and Angel Fuentes in June. Instead he announced his retirement now so the party machine can anoint a successor.

Donald Norcross may be a good guy, but it's depressing that this is what passes for democracy in New Jersey.

Stay Strong, The Machines Will Be Broken.... (4.00 / 1)
...it won't happen overnight; but the status quo isn't sustainable.

Anyone who actually read the links I presented knows that the Norcross machine is an abomination.

If Christie had the balls to be an honest man he would run on this issue (and win!)...but he's a total hypocrite.

With Loretta at his side, Corzine will bend to popular pressure to make real progress over the next four years.  That's why the machine's support for him is cosmetic.

The times they are a'changin!

[ Parent ]
The process is key (4.00 / 3)
in how these transitions work.  The best way is through all eligible citizens voting, and that is where this transition is troubling.  Joe Roberts should have done this before the primary.  Donald Norcross could have easily been the nominee, and the feeling of "we the citizens" not having any input would have been minimized, compared with the way it actually happened.

Last fall, when I worked with the Obama campaign in Gloucester Township, the GT Dem Party didn't really know what to do with us, and we were not so sure about them.  Even though we were on the same side.  Since then, I have worked hard for Dave Mayer's campaign for GT mayor.  There are good people within the local party organizations!  New insight, eh?  :-)  And I do think Donald Norcross will be good for the district.

But the problems come in the decision-making process, and we need to be wary of approaches that remove that process from the direct action of voters.  Of course, this has been argued over since the founding of the US -- how much political power to have in voters hands, versus the political elite.  A good number of the founders didn't trust all us plebes, and we ended up with the two legislative bodies.

Agreed! A Real Democratic Process Would Be Refreshing! n/t (4.00 / 1)
