Defending those who should be defended

Promoted from the diaries by Rosi Efthim - - I've read some really counterproductive crap about Frank Pallone the last couple weeks, on another site and not by us.. And though I'm all for having high standards even for quality legislators, it's high time for a reality check. Clammy delivers it.

I'll preface by saying 2 things: (1) I speak solely for myself here, and (2) while I can probably count the number of times I defended a Congressional Democrat (not praised, but defended) on one hand, I can't even count how many times I have been critical of one of our elected D's.

I live in a crap district, Congressman-wise, New Jersey's fifth.  My Rep., Scott Garrett, sucks.  When the vote is 400-30, he is ALWAYS one of the 30.  His staff leave his office to work for Michelle Bachmann (seriously).  One of McCain's former political directors called him a "nut".

But this isn't about Scott Garrett.  It is about Congressman Frank Pallone Jr.

I'm in awe of the overall effort that the netroots has undertaken with respect to healthcare reform - the FDL whip count, the "carrots, not sticks", the HCAN action items, Standing with Dr. Dean and all of the people behind this.  And what sucks to me is that right here in my state - right here in my district, is someone who "represents" me that couldn't be more opposed to pretty much everything I hold dear and I have no hope of anything other than maybe getting him out of office (in a pretty red district).

So I blog quite a bit at Blue Jersey.  Mostly on the Governor's race and national issues.  Lately, I've been doing a series on the Public Option, which has a banner talking up the Firedoglake WHIP count at the top of our main page.  We got Congressman Rush Holt to take the pledge on our BlogTalkRadio show (nice work, Jason) and did a "carrots, not sticks" diary as well.

What that means is that my only shot at having any impact on this debate and bill is to try and help other progressives in NJ stand behind their Representatives who are and have been out in front on this, and many other issues, for a hell of a long time.

One of those Representatives, Congressman Frank Pallone, has been given a real real bad rap and deserves a whole lot better.  Take it from someone who not only lives in his state, but lives in a District represented by a Grade A dickweed and knows what Frank Pallone means to the Democratic Party, New Jersey and progressives (and no, I have absolutely no connection to him or his campaign in any way).

He is a friend of progressives.  A friend of the netroots.  A contributor to the Blue Jersey community, who has been on BlueJerseyRadio recently (and will be coming on again).  He is approachable - both to his constituents and professionally (his team has been incredibly responsive to me with a request from my "real job", even though I live outside his district).

He is loyal to the cause - he is the Chairman of Governor Corzine's campaign, and has been one of the biggest, not to mention most vocal proponents of shedding sunlight on Chris Christie's no bid deals and deferred prosecution arrangements - even holding hearings recently.  He spoke out strongly and praised Blue Jersey for staying on top of the warrantless monitoring that Chris Christie's office did while US Attorney.  His House Subcommittee (which he Chairs) worked on HR 3200, which he is a co-sponsor of.  He's been a strong proponent of a strong public option for a long time.

I saw the video of him not committing to voting against any bill without a public option.  But I also know (even though I wasn't there) that video was shot right before what he knew was going to be a long night of very hostile Health Care Town Halls.  And this was a discussion with progressives at a time when he was about to be bombarded with verbal assaults from teabaggers.

Did he commit as strongly as we would have liked at that moment?  Of course not. Does he fit into the category of those who deserve "carrots" for being as vocal as we would like them to be on drawing a line in the sand on the public option?  No.  Should he have stuck around more earlier today to reply to comments (some very personal and borderline gratuitous)?  Sure.

But if those are things that merit him being written off or why anyone wants to say he is not with progressives or whatever else was thrown at him (by many who know very little about what a progressive and friend of the netroots he is) then I don't know who is.

Congressman Pallone is one of the good ones.  "Black or white" litmus tests and "superhero or scumbag" aren't always the only options.

He deserves better.

I am posting this here (4.00 / 3)
off the front page, as this relates to a number of things that went on lately regarding Pallone and some unnecessary heat he has taken at Daily Kos.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

Congressman Envy (4.00 / 1)
I would give ANYTHING to have a Representative as honest and hardworking as Frank Pallone. ANY DAY.

Those of us who started out in the Dean for America campaign that morphed into Democracy for America remember the first NJ caucus when we were deciding what to do with our progressive momentum.  Congressman Pallone was there.

He was with us all from DAY 1.  He IS THE ORIGINAL good guy.

I spoke personally with the Congressman when he was in Englewood for Loretta's anouncement.  He looked weary from the healthcare debate and was disappointed that the public option might not make it through.

Don't blame him for the fact that many Dems in the Senate feed at the Big Pharma trough so damn often that the "negotiators" within our own party have already cut a deal with Big Pharma, which in my opinion is much worse than United Healthcare.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

i am glad Rosi paraphrashed this... (4.00 / 1)
....for folks like me who missed the dKos bluster.

Because i read this and had NO idea what i was reading.

I'll post the link if you want (0.00 / 0)
But I'm incapable of reading the dKos diary in question without hurling things at the wall.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

I just read Clam's dK post and could simply NOT believe the rancor.  FOR FRANK PALLONE!?!?  really!?

Ok, so now i am ready to get in line behind clammy to sick up for Frank.
If the liberal blogoshphere wants to go apeshit on a NJ liberal, they should consider John Adler  I have some MUCH better suggestions.

yeah..... (0.00 / 0)
I didn't want to link to the posts at DKos because I don't like calling out anyone in particular, but there were a couple of very high profile respected bloggers egging others on - and they had no fucking clue.

I posted this on the sidebar here because I didn't want it to go unnoticed if Pallone or his staff happened to read the other stuff at DKos....

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

My sentiments, pre-zactly (as my mom used to say)!

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Proud to live in the 6th (4.00 / 3)
I've lived in 12 Districts in my life, and Frank Pallone is the best Representative I've ever had.  He's not only on the progressive side of most of the issues I care about, he and his staff are exactly as responsive as Rosi indicates.  I saw him stand up to the know-nothing howlers at the Red Bank town hall -- he gets a bravery medal for standing up for health care reform by owning his Subcommittee's work.  Progressives in search of Democratic spine should ask Frank to offer transplants to his colleagues.

Longtime defender of the little guy (0.00 / 0)

I am friends with several of Pallone's constituents in his 6th District, which is much of Middlesex and Monmouth Counties.

They all trust him to do the right thing.  He is one of the few with a spine, and he can be strong because he has had a couple of decades now of doing right by his people and businesses.   He finds a realistic middle ground.

I've heard that his constituents should be calling his offices to let him know they have his back, now and come election time, to help him stay strong on the public option.  There's little point in the bill without the public option.

Thank you. (0.00 / 0)
Thank you for the strong words of support and to the Blue Jersey community in general for all of the great work you do on this site.  I have been fighting for healthcare reform my entire Congressional career, and am committed to ushering the main principles of HR3200 through the House and eventually through Conference with the Senate. I am a strong supporter of the public option because I believe it is needed to drive down costs and to give consumers more choices.

Thank you, Congressman (0.00 / 0)
We know it. We see that you're aiming high to make sure our heath care system is more equitable, and more available. We see what you're doing for the public option. We're grateful and we're going to hold you to that.

We've got your back, however we can stand with you.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.
